Angelina (10 years old here) did re-write these lyrics. I don't think this was a "rehearsal". I think this was a done with the purpose of shooting this video. From what I have read, she came in and did this in one take. I agree with you that we should not try to say who is the 'best' when it comes to singing (or any art). It's all about what moves you... and everybody is going to feel things differently. For me personally, nobody moves me like Angelina, so she is my "best", but I also understand that she is not going to hit every listener the same way she hits me. As always, I love your reactions with Angelina, and I will be looking forward to your next one.

Changing the lyrics is something Angelina does with adult lyrics. Is amazing that she can read from a paper her own recent changes and sing with such quality at the same time.
The story is that Angelina's mother told her she could not sing this song unless she changed the lyrics, as Amy's version was certainly not child-appropriate. I find it to not be a very interesting song, but Angelina has a way of making anything she sings beautiful.
I appreciate your pointing out the difference between having an opinion and insisting that something is the best or the worst. People can get into such bitter arguments.

Angelina did the same rearranging of lyrics with Amy's version of her cover of "Rehab." She is so much more than a "singer" with her songwriting, lyrics, and arranging. As for lyrics, Angelina wrote the lyrics for all 3 of her originals, "Oslo" "What is Life" and "Shield." Thanks, as always for reacting to Angelina. Oh, and thanks so much for speaking out about "who is best!" It's so tiresome in comments when folks insist on doing that.

I like your approach to analyzing vocal artists. You are dead-on, here. Jazz is at the core of what Angelina does, and she does understand what she is singing, even if not always in the way of experiencing these adult hurts and sorrows. When she has, she cries, as with the death of a loved one (see her cover of Willie Nelson's, ”You Were Always on My Mind”.) Angelina, although still a child, moves a lot of us old guys emotionally with her singing gifts. To me, she's continuing the tradition of the great jazz singers of the past, like no one else is.

Angelina sings as natural as she talks, no effort or any stress when she sings she just opens her mouth and out comes magical vocals. Angelina is the ultimate jazz singer for me, because of her emotional content she puts in every song. love your reactions..
I didn't know this song but what a wonderful one it is. And, to be honest, I feel more connection with Angelina's version of it, without going very (too) deep into sadness/depression. This would have been a top-level cover for any adult singer, but a 10 years old child pulling this one off with so much class in it? When you don't see it you can't believe it.

As you noticed immediately Angelina changed lyrics indeed. You nailed also de reason why. She has done it several times when she has the feeling that she's not being confortable with some parts of the song. In my opinion she does that because she knows that the most important thing ehen covering someone's else song is to respect it so she want to give the 100% of herself. If she doesn't feel confortable, she can't give it. We have just to remember her versions of Bohemian Rhapsody and Goodbye yellow brick road in last AGT. She received congrats from Queen team by twitter for her version. Angelina has received an amazing parental support and obviously still has, and as you said, she knows what she want and how she want it. God bless her:.

Thank you for reacting to this from angelina Jordan. She was 10 years old in this video. Yes she rewrote the lyrics herself in the CAR taking her to this recording session so IT the lyrics could fit a Child at her age since the original lyrics don’t FIT a child. She rewrote the lyrics on the amy winehouse song called rehab too.

As always, very good reaction from you Valerie. Amy is one of the major inspirations to Angelina I think, an she has by now covers of 5 of her songs, rewritten the lyrics for three of them I think. This was her first Amy cover, as she was 10 years old. She did this video together with the NRK broadcast orcestra (or at least parts of it). I think it is quite remarkable how well she is able to set the tone and and the mood to these Amy songs like no one else, and still make them her owne in her way. You are also so very right about how singing has been turned into competitions like all over, in our time.
Yeah,she tried improvising the lyrics in this one,and i got pretty baffled by how good it sounded. I hadnt listened to Amy in several years at this point,so to me it was just like hearing Amy too,wich was quite emotional. Even when she plays around with Valerie (Made by Mark Ronson and Amy Winehouse) im stunned by how much alike she sounds to Amy.

Thanks for your reaction! It is one that everyone should hear. Singing is like art, you listen to and like what you prefer, and have your own favorites. People comparing who is best, Angelina, Dimash, Diana or any others, it`s just plain stupid. That discussion has no place anywhere. I have found my favorite, Angelina. No one can change my mind about that. For me, soul and heart comes first.
She did the same with another Amy Winehouse song Rehab. She always has this rule that she will not sing a song that is inappropriate for her age. And since she love Amy Winehouse she has to do it in order to sing some of her songs. And yes, she's the one who rewrote the lyrics.

Yes, she is something rare and special. She rewrote the lyrics on two of Amy's songs: this one, and "rehab", and she did that by herself, but with her mom's final approval. For me personally, I would put both of these in the bottom ten of Angelina's covers. Not because of her, but I'm just not a fan of Amy's music (I like her voice). The only Angelina cover of an Amy song that I really, really, like is "Valerie" (originally sung by the English indie rock band The Zutons , and later recorded by Amy and Mark Ronson). We haven't had a video posted by Angelina since AGT ended. The world has changed like never before with the Covid-19 pandemic. I hope she and her family are safe and secure. And I wish the same for you, Valerie, and for all of your CZcams followers. Billy J

I wish you had done her cover of Amy's "Valerie" which is my favorite of her Amy covers & shows her having fun at the beach with her little sister, Juliette, the love of her life. "Back to Black" doesn't really challenge Angelina's vocal ability, IMO. The most amazing thing about this performance is her rewriting the lyrics in less than 24 hours. She was ready to sing the song with the real lyrics until her Mom read them the day before & said you can sing it only if you rewrite the lyrics. She finished in the car ride to the studio, so those papers she keeps looking at are her hand-written lyrics she is singing for the first time. Talk about pressure & she is only 10 yo here. Amy was one of her greatest musical influences. She also rewrote the lyrics for Amy's "Rehab", not because of raunchy lyrics, but she said they made her sad because of the way she died. I would love to see your reaction to Angelina's cover of "Unchained Melody." I love her melismas & IMO this is a master class in melismatic singing from a 12 yo. What do you think?
I agree. Angelina's Unchained Melody IS a master class on Melisma. But now so are her 3 AGT Champions performances, especially the first two.

@@keithserafy I will say that I have never been a big fan of melisma, that is until Angelina, and I am quite old. I've seen melisma used sparingly and well, but if to excess it's not my cup of tea. I'll always recall when Whitney Houston's voice was not it's best in her later years she couldn't hit those high notes anymore. She used melisma as cover. It reached a point where I simply could not listen to her "live" anymore. Angelina's runs/riffs singing Unchained Melody, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road were perfect, and enhanced the arrangement, and they were the furthest thing from an "excuse." I absolutely loved it!! Also, for another performance with a "bit" of melisma by Angelina, it's her Instagram rehearsal sneak peak at Love on the Brain.

Some people compare her to AW but I think Angie has a better timbre ect..I also think she has the sounds of greats from the past, but most of all I think she sounds like herself, her sound & how she pronounces her words are wonderful & English isn't even her 1st languages. AW was great singer & writer & she also has 20 yrs on Angie also, but yet Angie still can project the emotion of a song cause she sings it (I feel) from her POV & how she think the music should be. I don't know if I'm getting myself across correctly. Plus taste is subjective anyways, except when it come to skills I believe, you either have/learn the skills or you don't, Than there is protogi's like Angie..

I take your point about comparing singers, but as long as it's based on something beyond "mere opinion" (which I will conveniently leave undefined), and is of an "apples to apples" nature, there's nothing wrong with a little comparison. And just as "the truth has nothing to fear from investigation", Angelina's covers have nothing to fear from close comparison with the originals.
(BTW, I'm not "challenging" what you said in your reaction, necessarily -- just think of this comment as having been "inspired" by what you said.)
As I have made clear in my other comment here, I have no problem saying that in this particular case, I feel that Angelina did not surpass Amy's original. (But that's OK. She was only 10, after all.)
But in several other cases, even when covering the most popular female singers (Adele, Lana, and Miley come immediately to mind), Angelina just plain puts more emotion into her vocals than the original artist. And it's not "extra" emotion: it doesn't sound forced or false; it just sounds… better. OK, I guess that's just opinion, but you know what I'm saying… She's not just a damn good singer _technically_ -- she's a damn good singer _artistically_ as well. (I know you have said as much in your reactions to her.)
The shocking thing is that this can be traced all the way back to when she was first singing, before she turned 2. (!) In this video czcams.com/video/VJjG68Dfr-8/video.htmlm52s she can be seen singing Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You", karaoke style, reportedly at one and a half years old. What's amazing is not *what* she's singing (i.e., the words and the notes) but *how* she's singing it: head thrown back, eyes almost closed… *emoting* at a year and a half! Now, one could say she's simply mimicking what she has seen another singer do, but Whitney Houston doesn't do that when she sings the song -- not in the movie and not in the music video. (She closes her eyes at some points, and slightly tilts her head back at others, but as she is singing the climactic line, her eyes are open and her head is upright.) So, does that mean little Angelina was doing that just _naturally_? Is that possible? I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts about this.

I've been rabidly devouring Angelina reaction videos for the last few weeks, and I've largely avoided reactions to this particular cover, because I didn't really care for it when I first heard it. (My problem with it is the monotonous melody in the verses. I know Amy's original is also rather monotonous, but she frankly does more with it than Angelina does, bending the notes and varying the timing more than we hear here. As a result, I've really only heard Angelina's version a handful of times.)
For this reaction, I decided to actually look up the lyrics to both versions to compare them. (Angelina's lyrics are actually easy to find because she released her version as a single.)
I was familiar with Amy's version, but it's not like I owned the album or anything, so I didn't really know what her lyrics were. I thought maybe Angelina had rewritten a problematic verse and certain lines here and there. I had no idea she had *completely* rewritten the entire song! So, now I have much more respect for this cover. It's still not my favorite musically speaking, but as a songwriting effort by Angelina, it is quite impressive (and her voice sounds great, of course).
(BTW, someone said she rewrote the lyrics "on the way to" the studio. For the record, the original post of this on her official channel says she "had 1 day to change the lyrics".)

Amy's voice is like nails on a blackboard to me -- and ditto Angelina's when she takes Amy's direction. Good on Angelina when she's channeling, say, Billie, Ella, Dinah, Whitney, and such. But channeling Amy? Big mistake. Just my opinion, of course, but a good and informed one.
Offbeat timing...I would call it swing. You are right about art, it is totally subjective.
