Honda’s Transalp returns but why don’t I like it?
Apparently, the mountains are calling. The 1980’s Honda Transalp has matured into a 90hp, 750cc adventure bike and priced at around £9,000 or 10,400 Euros, it’ll sell in bucket loads - But I just can’t put my finger on why it’s not for me…..

Transalps were never marketed as rally bikes, just all round machines that are capable off road and good on it. And this one I believe will excel on this role.

Agree. It’s a newer transalp. That’s all. And who knows, maybe they’ll give it a rally-esque treatment later. Like a “world raid” kit. What it’s not, is a 450RL moved up to adventure bike. Have to judge this bike based on what it is. Not what it isn’t.

It is just the 1st version... Give them some time and I would bet they offer what you are asking for. I personally love what I see so far and will consider exchanging my 2018 ATAS for one. I would lose ground clearance and suspension travel but get a bike that is roughly 100lbs lighter and has a better power to weight ratio. Agree with most of Your points. The gentle legend is back.
The fourth generation & on paper the best one yet. XL are not Honda’s dirt focused models the XR/CRF machines are. DCT is brilliant but will add 10kg. The mighty AT was always the flagship & adding premium features like: cc, tubeless & advanced suspension will probably hurt sales of the AT & increase price.
Positives: Uncomplicated allrounder, 755cc, 92bhp/75nm, ground clearence: 210mm, weight: 208kg, seatheight: 820&850mm, Wheels: 21/18, 6speed, all led lights, self cancelling blinkers, blinkers as drive lights, Electronics: more than enough, Suspension: Adequat & robust, Fuel range: 390km, Click on luggage without racks & lots of accessories, easy removal of fairings.
Looks: A clean classic & timeless design that true to its heritage.
Negatives: Naked out of the box, low muffler, no gps mounting bar not even as extra, no easy adjustment of windscreen & front fender, no easy adjustment of suspension, no Wingbadge again, & yes miss that Classic muffler design the 2»rocket pipes»
Location & access to airfilter, battery & sparkplugs ?
More positives than negatives & big step in the right direction but had Maybe wished for more with 2022 glasses on. Half hearted ? But no doubt it will be a success.

Looking at some comments, guess my disappointment comes from the fact that I was expecting a baby Africa Twin 750-850 to replace my '93 Africa Twin 750 next year for its 30th anniversary (after having had several Transalps) and they came up with a new Transalp... Looked at my old AT yesterday and found it nicer than the new Transalp!
From a pure Transalp perspective, the new one will probably be nice, if you manage to get a proper high exhaust, bash plate and hand-guards to be in line with the old ones.
My secret hope is that Honda aligns with BMW GSs and have a 750 (Transalp), 850 (new Africa Twin) and 1100 or higher (current Africa Twin)...😃

Don't think it's a T7 killer, especially off road, but it looks like it has the potential to be comfortable, reliable and practical. Qualities that we need to see more, not less of. Get a RAM mount and some side racks and it might be a very good bike that can go anywhere, just a bit slower than many of the other adventure bikes. I’ve now ranked all 8, and I’ve surprised myself with the result- I’ve put the Transalp in equal 7th place. So I won’t be ordering one and now need to finally decide which of the competition to buy. Ps, if you don’t feel comfortable holding leg up above the rear seat on mount/dismounting the bike, and having to hold it across about 40 cm horizontal, don’t even bother trying to get on the Honda. The pipe comment was the best thing I've heard against it. Probably wouldn't affect me much as I can count the times I've crossed 3 ft deep streams on with no hands. I reckon if people are that adventurous, they probably ought to pick a more purpose built bike. I'm fine with Swiss army knives and I'd spend the vast amount of my time with it on the road. Seems fine to take in the occasional forest service trail.

You are right in the way you describe the spirit of the bike, the problem is that it is compared with the spirits of other bikes of the same value, but which are certainly intended for other purposes, or rather, less purposes!
On paper, the weight/power/torque/price ratio is superior to its competition. But in addition, the performance of the engine supposes a broader use, such as passing through the city, as well as on the road, to the detriment of its off-road capabilities. I assume that it is a good decision, especially for traveling, something that the competition does not take into account as much except in its maxitrail categories.
It could be compared to the GS 850, but cheaper; with the T7, but more touring; with the Tuareg, but even more comfortable and powerful; with an 890 adv, but infinitely simpler and more reliable; with a KLR 650, but much more current and capable. Or compare yourself to all of them and many more, with the difference of lifting a rock and finding spare parts. Even when compared within the same brand, the CB 500 X is not as capable and the Africa Twin is beyond heavy, sophisticated and expensive.
In short, this bike came to cover the space that no other brand covers effectively in almost every aspect. But also, thinking of a mass audience, hopefully capable of performing 20% of the maneuvers shown in the avant premieres of each adventure motorcycle released.
Then, we can understand that the public's expectation was stronger due to the habit of demanding beasts with wheels, after so much marketing that, under the desire to enjoy, managed to hide the act of suffering.
It is true that greater capacities of a motorcycle make the user a better driver, but motorcycles are becoming more powerful, requiring larger engines, making the motorcycles heavier, and requiring more power again, generating a vicious circle that separates completely from the uses that most mortals would give it. And in that sense, I believe that the new Transalp tries to lay the foundations of what an adventure motorcycle should be, a notion that even its older sister lost.
    ¡Greetings from Argentina!

My conclusions over the past week are that the Taureg and Tenere will likely remain kings of the middleweight ADV bikes for at least another year. The new Suzuki V-Strom 800 DE came close to giving them a run for their money (and may still do so), but it’s extra girth will likely scare many riders away. So, it slots into third for me. The Ducati’s price tag is a major turnoff too, so it’s not a realistic option worth considering for many folks.

I think Honda needs two versions - a harder core model with up-rated suspension and protection to compete with (i.e., crush) the T7. More or less match the T7 in most respects and the engine will make it no contest. And a more street version with 17/19 cast wheels. Triumph does this, why not Honda? I'd go with the street version myself - shame about the tubed rims though.
I'm 68 and absolutely done with tall heavy ADV bikes. A relatively light, low seat ADV/tourer with decent power ... I'd still seriously consider this bike.

I don't get why everyone is hanging onto the hp on this bike, on tubes pushing over 100mph for any amount of time is reckless. The T7 does 100mph no problem and cruises at 80mph with zero effort. This new transalp is nice but its not a T7 competitor at all.

It's quite likely that Honda will do with the new Transalp what they've done with the CB 500X...start with an excellent 'base' model and upgrade progressively over several years. It's now a terrific package for the asking price, but still only A2 power, sadly. Now that Triumph are developing pure dirt bikes, I'd really like to see them take the Tiger Sport 660 (by all accounts a fantastic road biased bike) and 'adventurize' it...keep the road/touring focus but go with 19/17 spoked tubeless rims, add a little ground clearance and possibly cruise control. This would be a more direct competitor for the new transalp.

I'm not sure that I was ever expecting a more aggressive bike than this if I'm honest, certainly didn't think it would be a serious T7 rival. As others have said, the old Transalp was more of a road biased machine anyway. I agree that it could do with things like a GPS mount , even the current CB500X has that, and a USB outlet as well as the 12v. Personally I like the looks of it though. Looking at the accessories on the Honda website there are some deflectors and such like listed and, I think similar extras were originally listed for the CB500X when it came out in 2013. Later updates did away with the need for those I think. Not sure why Honda would do that again. The thing I really don't understand is the decision to go for tubed tyres. I suspect that we'll see some twerking of the features over the next two or three years. Need to try one when they arrive in the showrooms I think.
