A Look Back At Beckett Pokemon Magazine

- Pokemon had many unofficial magazines back in the 1990's, but the Beckett Pokemon magazine was the one I grew up with. Since there was no official Pokemon magazine in the US Beckett kept everyone up to date with the latest Pokemon news and price guides. Along with many other fun and interesting things! So today I take a trip down memory lane and show you all what it was like for me growing up with this magazine! Follow me on Twitter: / abttp_

I was born in 2001 so I haven't been around long enough to connect but just watching these videos about older Pokemon history is quite cool. I've been a fan for my whole life and have collected everything I can find. I got lots and LOTS of Pokemon crap but to have this vintage stuff would be awesome. I have some of it, as I've collected lots of little random things. I have a few Beckett Magazines and some Burger King toys. But I just want to thank you for letting me glance into the older days of it's history.
Your name. It is beautiful.
I was born in 2001 too. When I was a little kid,and pokemon was at diamond and pearl anime,my parents heard about the kids that were killed by that music in Lavender town so I wasnt allowed to watch pokemon.2 years ago I conviced my parents to let me play pokemon again and when I saw how much I missed...
***** I know but that's what my parents were saying.
Thank god I don't have overprotective parents. I can't beleave they did that to you.
VladCool2001
That's because it was a theory, and your parents probably believed it. Too bad though :(. I'm happy my parents never heard or believed any of that!
Testicle pen ftw
***** Can't help but think that "Testicle pen" was once a euphemism that never got popular
the testicle pen looks like mine
Celebi's Japanese name is Seribii???
It's all so clear now...
When I first learned about Pokemon when I was about 5, my uncle gave me a huge stack of these magazines. I remember reading and re-reading them over and over. I read them so much that they became so worn out. Pages were hanging on by a thread, spines were wearing out. Thanks for taking me back to my childhood Brandon. :)
I miss the old days of Pokemon.
busaccaboys I like the Battle Frontier, but the first 5 seasons have to be the best in my opinion!
busaccaboys It's OK, everyone has their own opinion.
Sergeant Froakie Hi son
Shadow Greninja BUT I'M YOUR DAUGHTER!
Sergeant Froakie Oops sorry you two both have the same account name
A funny thing:
There was an Italian version of Beckett Pokémon Magazine. As in, "they took the english magazine, translated it, and that's it". As a result. the magazine was filled with ads for Pokémon merchandising actually unavailable in Italy, and instead of having its own mail section they just replaced the names of the kids who sent the letters and drawings on the english magazine with random Italian names. The truth was obvious because many drawings had on it names not matching the ones placed underneath and they actually never gave an address to send letters.
You're hilarious dude
Just HILARIOUS
"What's on the back of that pen? A testicle?!" I died laughing.
Thanks for showing these magazines! I've been playing Pokemon since the first games were released, but never in my life have I ever seen one of these magazines, nor heard of them before until this video. It's so weird, and I really wish that I knew about these before they stopped making them. D:
Okay old video but I just remembered that this magazine with weird art for the Pokemon existed and I had to find it one way or another, and I did!
Thank you!
This brings back memories. My fave sections were Fan Art and Q&A
I would love to see more of these kinds of videos, they're just so interesting. :D
Did anyone see the powerpuff girls in the pikachu for president cover?
Me
me
all the saturday morning cartoons

Wow, I remember seeing these magazines alot! I'd always look at them when I'd go to the grocery store with my mom. They even had a few promo cards if I remember correctly.
Thanks a lot for this video! I completely forgot about these magazine I was like 6 or 7 at the time when my brother and cousins introduced me to pokemon so watching this video triggered my memory. Wow I wish I still had these but sadly threw them all out as I got older :/ I still play Pokemon to this day but never really kept much besides the games, some cards, and couple toys
Loved this video! I laughed so hard at you Diglett Cupcake comment! Haha!
Amazing video. I forgot about these. Nostalgia+1.
The good old days when magazines well it was a fun run.
-Thank you for this awesome video keep up the good work
BRANDON! Can you do a video of ALL the Pokemon stuff you have? Cards/games/mags/toys. I'd LOVE to see you're rare cards and awesome old stuff :D!
Lmao
I agree sir treeko
He just did a video like that, look through his channel and you'll find it
Funny thing is... He actually made a video on it!
Yes guys i do know he made one... And if you notice. it is AFTER i posted this ;) i think it may have worked!
I never subscribed to this magazine but I definitely remember getting a couple copies of it when I was a kid. The one that you showed with the cover where Pikachu is on Ho-oh's back is one I remember definitely having! I also remember having one where I think Squirtle, Pikachu, and I think Charmander were playing baseball on the cover. Lol.
So much nostalgia. Thanks for the video.
6:22 “What the heck is that on the back of that pen? A testicle?” I laughed so hard.
Dude, this video is awesome! ...i remember my first pokemon game, pokemon gold.it was awesome.then i played sapphire and it was great! i'm still a fan of pokemon to this day and i have pokemon y and i beat it in 4 days! (not lying)from christmas to my birthday. continue making these funny videos and spread the love of pokemon everywhere! :D
I remember Beckett and Pojo's Unofficial. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.
I remember on Christmas morning when I was a kid, my Mom and I went to some random store and outside in a shopping cart outside the store I found a magazine sitting instead. I think someone forgot they bought it. So I took it home and considered this Santa's gift to me! Such good memories!
Wow! I totally remember subscribing to this magazine back in the day. I still own a lot of these magazines, stopped getting issued sometime after the 3rd Gen.
I remember these magazines I loved them you know what I'm gonna go through my stuff to see if I still have them fingers crossed
Holy shit I totally forgot about these magazines! I remember staring at the 4 - 5 different colorful covers deciding which one to get. Thanks Brandon lol
I remember they had a journal style story for Gold and Silver before the game was released in the US, with the protagonist named Hiro. I was hooked and named my character after him when I got the game on launch day.
I still have all my old Pokemon magazines.. Like the ones in your video!
Here in Brazil we had an official magazine called Pokemon Club It was released until 2003 when it became a session in other magazine called Nintendo World (the brazilian equivalent of the Nintendo Power magazine)
I'd like to suggest a top 10 vid on Pokemon Hacks, games with a custom pokemon story with original content, like pokemon Naranja where they recreated the orange islands series in a game or Ruby Destiny.
I remember that magazines back in the 90's!
And you got an Ancient Mew card!
Ahh Becket Pokemon! The memories! :D I still have my favorite issue, which is the one that talks about Brawl (2008) before my mom finally bought it (2009) xD
I’m from the U.K. and I remember getting the Pokémon magazines as a kid
Those magazines were badass me and my bro used to get them. I mean I was born in 1999 but he showed me his old ones. Memorys
I grew up in the 90's, and so remember all this, fyi on the Bill Clinton trainer card, if he were a pokemon trainer, which pokemon do you think would be in his dream team? I recently started recollecting the card theme decks since I never had access to them as a kid. This is a pretty awesome channel dude. I think former President Clinton would have to have a Hypno in his dream team.
I still have most of my Beckett Pokémon issues. I've always loved reading it too since I've been collecting Pokémon merchandise since 1999.
I still have my Beckett poster with all the Pokemon hanging around a treehouse. I also kept a picture of Ash and a bunch of Pokemon watching the 4th movie inside a theater, sweet memories.
Recently due to me liking card games more and more, i wanted to find this video again. I have and i wanted to say, if you are reading this, thank you for making this video
Cool magazines. I wish we had something like that back in the day but all we got were some shitty activity books and very very few issues of Pojo.
Also the editor (if I remember correctly) Doug Kale would make videos on CZcams and I loved watching those. He reminded me of a kid just like me. And his little editors notes were so funny. I'd love to meet him someday
Your an awesome Pokémon CZcamsr!! Keep it up!!!
I LOVED these magazines! I was always looking at H-E-B and Wal-Mart for them. I was never to keen on subscriptions as a kid.
I have the Ho-Oh and Pikachu issue. It was how I first learned of the Gold/Silver pokemon (got it around the same time I got Pokemon Red, Gold, and Silver) and the messed up names and drawings still give me a giggle. I think because it was an unofficial Pokemon magazine, it ended up obtaining wrong information about G/S. But the art was awesome.
Dude, these were legit AF!!! I know I have one with Venusaur on the cover somewhere 🤔
abrandontothepast + new vid every week= Great Summer
I am soooo jealous right now. I got into Pokemon in 2011 and I would love to have that now since I'm only 12. Too bad I missed it by ONE year >.
Btw I know I'm too young to have a CZcams account but it doesn't really matter. Just 4 more months until I'm 13 :P
SingleStar me too
bro, playing pokemon at twelve, u are the best 12 year old ever
Lucian Kossain
Are you saying that I might be to old for it? It would be fine except I don't really understand what you said supposed to mean .-.
Oh god no Im fifteen and I preordered alpha sapphire
I've like Pokèmon since I was 3 and never seen any of these magazines damn I want one now
If I recall correctly, there was a Pokémon magazine with a Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time/Darkness review that was just total misinformation. But for the life of me, I can't remember what issue it was... I wonder if I can find it somewhere? It was the inspiration behind an idea I had, so I'd like to reread it someday...
I used to love Pokemon when there was no EV/IV training stuff, now it's people just raising tanks beasts.
I remember getting those magazines when I was little, I've loved pokemon so I subscribed for it untill they ended :(
I remember these, I had a pokemon one and a few yugioh ones from when I was a kid and had gotten them from neighbors.
I collected these throughout the whole of gen 4 but just remember it disappearing well at least now I know what happened to them.
Oh yeah I remember these magazines, I used to buy these all the tie, I still have a couple in my closet, *sigh* good times
I loved the fan made cards you'd send to the magazine company.
I liked that Pokemon Tarot Cards article in one of the Halloween issues. Its fun to use the TCG cards for other uses besides battling.
Holy shit, I completely forgot about these magazines.
That image... is it JonTron?
Im getting closer to finding you
Oh god ur profile pic is super creepy...
UMG IT'S JANTRAN
and now some years later than this video...its till is popular and around. There's a live action movie too! also rumors of a theme park area in Universal Orlando! you known just an update from the future present lol
i loved the funny pokemon cards once i saw a bagon and they put a paper bag on its head (of course it was drawn) and renamed it "bagon my head" haha
I remember having one of these with a Machop on the cover
I have one big box and one big binder the box was my sisters and the binders was my brothers They were collecting them for a while so i have some real good ones like i have the japan ones too :D
in the uk we have a magazine called pocket world and it is 100 percent unofficial and it is still running to this very day
I remember these magazines one issue had an interview with Veronica Taylor and from that day on I knew who voiced Ash and his Mom and in the next season Pokemon Advance May. And that was when I just got into anime big time and became a fan of the genre so it really surprised me to find out that Ash the character who I watched on Sunday mornings is voiced by a woman that was a shock like getting hit by one of Pikachu's Thunder attacks.
I was a subscriber to Beckett Pokemon Magazine from August 2006 to its untimely demise in 2010. It was the only thing I used for new Pokemon news, and every month I looked forward to it on the kitchen table afterschool. I still have quite a few of them in my room. After the magazine got cancelled, I was quite disappointed, but by then I was aware of sites like serebii.net to use for information. It's quite unfortunate that the magazine got shut down, but hey, every thing must have its end at some point...
Celebi on that page was called Serebii as in the website
Ultra Gaming Master
that's it's name in japan
Holy shit I have a few of their magazines still! Remember the Yugioh/Pokemon crossover cover?
Dat Celbi part thou.
Maaaaan I remember Becket Pokemon!! I still have a bunch of my old issues and got them right up until they stopped coming out. I must've discovered it a lot later than you, though, since I don't remember the covers ever looking that awesome! A lot of the later ones were rather lazy, looking back on them. But they still had a lot of cool stuff in them and a lot of the segments you mentioned never went away. In fact they brought out the news on each new Generation as they released, publishing lists of all the new Pokemon and such. Luckily they got a lot better with their accuracy as time went on. XD Oh, and they did stop including so much miscellaneous merchandise in the price guide, limiting it to only the cards by the time I subscribed - but that was probably because there were so many more cards to list by then. XD
I like when you make videos of the more obscure topics from the Pokemon franchise rather than adding to the hundreds of those that cover the same tired information. It's refreshing.
My friend would LOVE the Squirtle one
Oh...Oh my gosh I just went through memory lain! I remember those Manganese.
This video was applesauce, I actually laughed pretty hard during your mini-review of their guess-art for the G/S pokemon, dat Celebi.
I find myself laughing ALOT while watching you
5:54 I HAD THAT SNORLAX TOY! :D
T-T I wish I had subscribed to the Beckett Magazines.. They seem sooooo coooll!!
If you pause at 4:38, at the right you can see what looks to be the same squirtle plush from a certain fan made pokemon series.

The last issue I got was back in 2010. Without having it with me, I am unable to say the month, but it had Arceus on the cover and had an article on HeartGold and SoulSilver. So my question is this: WHY did the magazine end?
They got sued for using official Pokemon artwork.
I LOL'D at the Samurai Scyther.
I got 1 issue of this.. with the 3 Hoenn starters on the front. Red background.
Nostalgia right here!
There's one entry for Pokemon merchandise that had these spoof toys from the makers of Meanies (a GBK style spoof of Beanie Babies).
LOL the end!
*Sighs*... i had a few issues of the DBZ and Pokemon mags. I've no idea what happened to them over the years.
Umm, the show actually first aired in Japan in 1997. Not 1995. The first two games came out in Fabruary 1996 so ha! ( Although I heard they were originally planned for December 1995 ) Great staff they had.
I am glad I was around in this era of pokemon I remeber this to bad for the kids who where born in 2001 didn't live the good era of this
@ABrandonToThePast what’s the outro music from?
When I was 9 I had that same exact question but with a victini instead of a zapdos at 3:44
We used to read Pojo. But I had a Beckett as well.
In the Uk, Walkers used to give away Pokémon Pogs in their crisp packets
1:44 is that mimi from the original digimon?
2010?! I missed it!
I'm Dutch, so I've never seen this before. Looks pretty cool xD
The artwork looks like something from MAD magazine. I like it. : P
I caught a Legendary with a Timer Ball. But I needed a lot of timer balls. I caught Xerneas with a Master Ball but Mewtwo with a timer ball. Timer Balls are pretty hard to use to catch a legendary.
ABrandonToThePast that looks like an epic mag!!! I used to get a magazine called Pokémon World, but that ended near black and white era.... :( :( it became a mag called Pocket world... It not has moshi monsters and stuff in it aswell.
What's the music at the end of your videos?
i collected those marbles too when i was a kid =D
I actually have some Pokemon magazines, including Pokemon card parodies, and Pokemon fan art.
2:13 Been spending most our lives, livin in a Tentacool's Paradise.
I love your videos Brandon X3!
