- Why Isn't Rocket League Dead?
Happy Thanksgiving!
I wanted to offer a different perspective surrounding this topic,
hopefully you found it valuable.
This video is missing several polishing touches, but regardless, thanks for watching.
More videos to come!

#rocketleague - Hry
This game won’t die as long as there isn’t a competitor imo. It’s too unique
I was going to say the same thing...any other game has a similar competitor...fighting games, fps, RPGS you name it...rocket league is the only "soccar" game and everyone thought that was a good thing, I dont think so...thats why psyonix/epic dont care because they are not preassured to do anything because either you play their game or you dont play nothing, player base doesnt have any way of migration if they want to try something else
Certified Madden moment
unique? sure. but the game, and its community sucks.
what should be play then?@@TheJoviLovi
@@TheJoviLovi sure the community can be annoying but the game at it’s core doesn’t suck.
RL is a simple game - hit ball with a car, very fast to play casually - literally 5 min matches but also has insane skill ceiling - just watch any pro or freestyler.
I bought RL in 2015, I don't even know why and it's the only game I play regularly since then... I'm a casual, playing few matches per day but still it never got boring.
in wich rank are u?
@@lucasavellosilicz9746 I play 1v1, I'm in plat
Epic came in and turned a passion project into a cash cow. Gameplay loop is fun, psyonix created the closest gaming approximation of a team sport I’ve ever seen. Absolutely GOATed game
100%
They need more money to fund fortnite
@@Jriniscoollol, I think it might be the other way round
my problem isnt that they are removing trading, my problem is that they dont have any kind of communication with the users and that infuriates me
As a 2 years rl trader, I honestly have the exact same thought
Epic won’t listen to their community, and that’s what’s going to hurt them going forward. Great video, it really explained the whole situation very well!
You're 100% on the money.
Thanks for watching!
@@GizmoPsycho Anytime brother
As a fortnite player I can’t relate
They don't have too. Big companies don't need their customers to be 100% happy, they just need them to keep coming back. Without competition, that part is surprisingly easy.
Dude why does every one keep assuming that rocket league is what defines Epic? People keep saying “Epic won’t listen to their community”, but honestly Rocket League is not, and hasn’t ever really been Epic’s priority. I mean, if you play Fortnite, Epic is absolutely excellent at listening to the community. They usually fix an issue within a day, and are constantly changing basic aspects of the game based on feedback. Do I think it’s fair to say “The unfortunately small division of Epic Games that are working Rocket League don’t listen to the community”
Great video, way better than every CZcamsr saying game is dead for 10 mins
With the current state of the game I thought that now would be a good time and to shed light on Psyonix's relationship with Epic, and
offer a different prospective.
Thanks for watching :)
well they also aren't wrong so...
its not dead because it follows stupid trends. thats how all games survive now.
@@Wiffttrl did you not watch the video the game is farrr from dead.
100M players active on the game indicates it is far from dead. The gameplay is the same which is what people keep coming back for. Getting rid of trading is average but life will go on and in 6 months time no one will be talking about how there's no trading
It’s because it’s such a competitive game and pretty much has infinite potential and mechanics and it’s so satisfying
Wow so many like thanks I think rocket league can expand as far as your imagination so if you don’t have a big one than think off ideas to make it more fun😊
He has a point 😅
Yeah, they can't change the core gameplay so in the end whatever they remove it's still RL
infinite potential? are you high?
@@TheJoviLoviHow does it not have infinite potential?
@@farexponent9173 ok
I can only talk about my own experience with the game but what I love about its design is the combination of very simplistic core gameplay and an incredibly high skill ceiling. This makes the game very addictive because you think “Hit ball, score goal. I can do that!”, but you can’t. The fact that, even after almost 10 years of the game being out, we all still suck at Rocket League, is what sets it apart from any other game I’ve ever played.
Personally, what I love most is seeing my progress, learning new mechanics and understanding the game better. But I also love how easy it is to miss a ball and look stupid, leading to hilarious moments when you play with friends (less so with randoms).
And even though the community can be quite toxic, and nowadays, any feedback gets absolutely ignored by the game devs and Epic, I don’t think the game will ever die as long as stubborn people like me exist who think they can one day ‘beat’ this game and be good at it :)
😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
100% me😂
I've been saying it for years, we need a "Ha! We all suck!" quick chat
The reason that I'm still playing has a few reasons :
- I've put in so much time by now to learn this game, and if i stop, those skills do not transfer to any other game. So i feel like it would be a waste
- There's nothing like it, and i still have fun in the game. I still like learning new mechanics, and playing with friends.
Basically it all comes down to : "There's nothing like it"
And if you like rocket league, you have no other choice of game.
The only game i know that is slightly similar is Turbo Golf Racing.
The only similarities are that there are cars, balls and boost.
But the gameplay is totally different, for starters there's no option for teamplays in TGR.
So yeah.. THIS IS ROCKET LEAGUE!
It’s an extremely satisfying game to get good at but at the same time you can never be satisfied with how good you are, which gets you hooked.
It's always kind of sad when people keeps talking about some game "dying" when they don't even understand what's the thing in the game that keeps getting people engaged for years.
I've been playing games since 1990 and tbh, RL is easily the hardest game to master I've ever seen or played! That's the juice that keeps me hooked in probably until no one else but me is playing...
True, the learning curve is so steep it turns off a lot of people initially.
Plus the fact that 'new' mechanics are still being discovered today is absolutely a testament to everything you said.
Great point!
2015: Psyonix Let's make it fun, first.👍
2023: Epic Let's remove trading & make it expensive af 😈
Yup
Free to play, games as a service. Freemium. We love capitalism!
The game wont die, because it makes football better then any Fifa or PES games lately. Let's be honest. It's more fun then those games. Especially as both of the latter, releases a new version each year, and somehow manage to fudge it up more. There is no game that includes a ball, that should be shot, dribble and passed that is better than RL as far as I know. And I am a football fan!
Absolutely.
It's the difference between 'automated' mechanics versus practiced or
skill-based mechanics,
exactly like soccer.
That last quote, though “ make it fun first” just hit hard

Thank you so much!
I plan to make more and
better videos in the near future!
Bought the game on launch. Hit Top 100 a few times since. 5k hours. I've played Devs. Pro's. Seen it all pretty much. Game is so unique that it has a monopoly on the market. No need to update it to "compete" with other games. So it just sits and sits. Not much change. I know the devs want to change it but I think epic is holding them to a NDA on what they want and is cancelling it all. Wish some devs at Psyonix would speak out and talk more openly like they used too. Been waiting for UE5 for years. Steam Workshop Integration for years. Hell... even underglow would be cool at this point. Eventually they will need to add something new to spice it up again but who knows how long that will be. They may just end up making a 3rd game. Been a Psyonix fanboy since June 2015 and I still am. I just want roadmaps again. Updates and posts. We've been in the dark for years now. If you've given up on the game just say so. At least we get an answer and a update for the future. Anyways if anyone reads all this thank you for listening to my TED Talk.
Thank you
Holdup... Gamma is that you?
@@GizmoPsycho Nah, my name in game is Carmac lol.
I think the lack of good online arcade style sports titles available on current consoles and PC has cemented this game's seemingly endless popularity. I really miss old arcade sports titles and this simple to play yet difficult to master gameplay feels like a throwback to a dead genre.
I love playing Rocket league with my friends. And thats the core of it. Havent traded once, so that means nothing to me. Its just such an unique experience, and even if you loose, or do terrible moves, it always makes me laugh. Just love it.
Can you imagine Rocket League without the party system?
Apparently, it wasn't originally 'planned' as it required a lot of work on the back end.
However, a few people on the team pushed for it and the rest is history haha
@@GizmoPsycho wow that's actually insane if I could only solo queue in this game I would've quit a long time ago lol
This is simple, the game is amazing, is super fun to play and is not something like DOTA or COD the matches are like 5 or 10 minutes, or if you are not in the mood to compite or play with others you can fly in free training instead, we need better community, just that..
i swear, if the community had atleast hope for epic games to refine rocket league, instead of giving up and saying the game is dead when epic games bought rocket league, epic games could have been more motivated for the community, instead, epic games thought that they wouldn't make a profit from rocket league, so their number one priority was getting as much money back as possible.
@@yergirl3368they literally did have hope after epic bought rl, the game peaked at 1 million players daily almost like fortnite. But epic decided to focus on rl cuz its community are stupid enough to buy items and fill epic's money, even if they remove "side" features from the game.
found this channel only gives out banger🔥
I mean, in just one moment the game became dead to anyone related to trading, without any comment even now. So I totally understand everyone who claims rl is dying.
the satisfaction of the game is what makes people come back
Those epic saves and awesome goals makes you want to keep getting better... plus all the freestyle content makes you think you can do that so you keep playing
In reality its an addiction, the game is like a casino that massages your reward centre
And maybe the fact that there's literally no other options.
I didn’t watched the video yet but for me its that learning new stuff feels so good, air dirbbling the first time felt so fing good. The only problem with that is that learning has its highs and its lows. And if ur in the low phase there is basically nothing u can do in that game. Adding more game modes would be actually so nice and would bring this game to new lvls
Unique and simple.
You get in and out of the game within minutes.
Small download size.
Updating isn't frequent often.
Works decent on all platforms, even on other operating systems where you might have to deal with delay in virtual machines.
Has Epic behind so it won't lag behind in marketing.
man I hope you're right. Great vid as always when I see your content. Can't say I'm not one of the doubters tho, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that I'm wrong
Thanks for watching man :)
Nice catch phrase in the end!
Actually it is soon as free to play came out it pretty much killed most of it's fan base and OG fans. The people who play rocket League now are new people or people that's been playing for a while but recently got good once epic bought them out and removed dlc and started adding skins that's like 25 dollars now it's a shame too see and honestly i hate too see it in this way they lost me when they removed trading
The games been "dying" once EPIC acquired it, says every Steam forum poster ever.
i dont really undertsand how people want to rl to become "better"
i mean in this game its already impossible to update gameplay itself and the only possible thing i can imagine is unlock workshop maps for consoles and get rid off hard rank reset (its pretty tilting when u were gc2 div 2 before season 11 and then cant bring it back for 2 seasons in a row). i dont want rl to switch to UE5 cus for me it will probably ruin the game, i mean its already perfect and i can increase graphics any time i want
but removing trading was wild ngl, thats really some bad news
there is a lot of improvement that can be made, as you said making workshops more accessible but also making them easier to make, more advanced, and even co-op. and thats just 1 aspect of the game. also the ranks don't hard reset but the cap is at 1540 mmr, I've lost 400 mmr in 1 season going to 1540 but at the end of the season the inflation has brough everything back to normal
u didnt understand me with a rank reset. my average rank was gc2 div 2 and in season 10 and before it would reset me to gc1 or c3 div4 which isnt really bad and after a month of playing i could easily play in low gc2 lobbies. after season 11 it resets me all the way back to c3 div1 and i dont think its fair. because of that a lot of high gc2 -gc3s are in gc1 and even tho im improving its still not enough to return in gc2. thats really tilting and is a huge problem cus im a ranked "sweaty" player
and about co-op... yeah i dont have friends to play with so i didnt mention that :/@@bastiaan531
As a console player its frustrating that I am restricted to online matches, all with the same general idea, or free play/training packs. My fav RL content to watch is custom maps, and they look like so much fun. Car control maps, rings, air dribble maps, parkour ones, Olympic style events, even racing. Being restricted to a box seems way less fun. Hopefully UE5 or some major update allows all players to load custom maps here soon, I'm sure theres many people like me dying to try some of the stuff we see online from PC players. We'd also get better
Also, if fortnite does come out with a racing mode with RL controls, I hope it pans out well. The physics on vehicles in the game is questionable at best, & doesn't even compare to the smoothness of RL. But if they implement it into a UE5 game, and it feels as it should, I could see RL on UE5 being right around the corner. Its also gonna be funny to watch those that can speed flip with good car control just demolish the fortnite playerbase in races
As a console player, it’s frustrating that ranked maps like Deadeye Canyon Oasis still have performance drops on Xbox. Remove the damn map from ranked or fix it for console players.
I'm kind of amazed no-one has developed a free/open source clone of the basic gameplay.
Great video, great middle section, and great conclusion. Nice 👍
Appreciate it!
One of the best underrated CZcamsrs honestly
Much better video than I expected
Thanks!
More to come.
The thought of Fortnite "absorbing" RL into its playground is what will keep people from continuing to play. Also, the lack of communication and proof of direction to the community is burning the bridge to the players. Keep RL OUT of Fortnite and check in with the player base more frequently. (After all, you depend on us to keep the lights on)
Great commentary!
Thank you!
RL endures for the same reason SSBM endures. Because the developers aren't in the business of making the game easier. If you do something awsome, it's all on you, and that feeling can't be beat in competitive gaming
Great vid , really tells what it needs to be telled
The reason the game is decent doesn't mean if U don't add anything the game will survive it will die if they don't add anything new
It's unique, that's the only reason Epic hasn't successfully killed it yet... but dammit, they're trying.
Very nice video! I didnt realize Psyonix past before SARPBC was tied with Epic. What a parallel. But I still think the removal of trading is a killer. And now the RLCS changes for 2024 aren't looking good. Ranked is in shambles. No new players and many veterans leaving. Sad days.
"Make it fun, first" shifted to "Make it make money" a long time ago. I appreciate the hopeful tone of this video but I struggle to see the light in the current situation tbh.
Too many people have invested so many hours into getting better that it won't just die out
God. Unreal Tournament was my childhood, i am still playing UT3 now.
It would be nice if they only counted unique IP’s in that ‘monthly players’ number. Cause I feel the real monthly player number is probably close to half if not less of the one given from just how many smurf and alt accounts there are.
I hate it when I owngoal and then hear "Kachow!"
As someone who's played overwatch since 2016 your game is VERY FAR from dead.
I've been playing since 2016... and I keep improving to this day. That's why I keep coming back.
sunk cost fallacy :3
@@Silvyya trust me other games have a much worse sunk cost fallacy
@@ag99900 true but a sunk cost fallacy is still a sunk cost fallacy
I bought the game like the 2nd week it came out. A few friends of mine got it but I wasn't impressed. I thought it looked stupid so I dismissed it right away, They had a deal where on steam they sold it for $17, I forget why because the game was still really new but I said the hell with it and bought it, Now among the friends who started together Im the only one who plays, and Im as addicted to the game as can be. Sometimes finding myself at work thinking about the game or going through it in my head to learn a new mechanic.
i’m that addicted to the game that i have dreams about it, learning new mechanics, replaying matches i’ve played just before heading to bed or playing solo q i haven’t played yet. the only way i have ever been able to play is solo q, friends don’t really enjoy the game as much as i do so they don’t play, i think the skill ceiling being too high seems too daunting for them
Damn that was interesting, thank you. Can't imagine not playing anymore. Long Live the League.
The more you talk about this game being dead, the more people think that. This video probably caused people to stop playing the game as much of the tweeting did.
The community and lack of communication from our parent company is the reason the game is stagnating. The Community is just making it worse with negative speak. But non-bias, good video.
The removal of trading it just too much, like it or not it was a big deal for players, I remember I got excited every time I got a crate when playing a match, then they removed it, but now removing one core thing which is trading, I had already quit cause the game was becoming boring for me, no joy of getting crates anymore, the only way to get new items was to put in credits and buy from other people, but now, any chance of me coming back is dead
Rocket League is a sport, which happens to also be a video game. That's why it won't die. And I'm not talking about some ephemeral attempt at recreating an IRL sport, where the developers have the impossible task of trying to reduce the infinite possibilities of human athleticism into a series of button presses. RL is a sport unto itself, built from the ground up, with a skill-ceiling that is only dictated by imagination, intellect and the laws of physics. That's why Rocket League won't ever die. Epic will some day kill it, or make a terrible sequel or god knows what. But then... someone will come along and make a physics-perfect open source recreation, and RL will continue to exist and the exact same player base will follow.
Great point!
The developers definitely designed the game with the sport (and esport) aspect in mind,
as they were big fans of FIFA and soccer overall.
I might make a specific video going
in depth about this,
it's a genius concept.
Awesome vid ❤
Thanks bro ❤️
The game will, thankfully, be fine. I don't mind all the changes except for the removal of trading, that one stings,
Wait wait wait...psyonix team was who did mass effect 3's multiplayer?!?
No wonder that mode was so much fun...
It’s simply a great game, or let’s say one of the greatest and it’s very sustainable by nature.
The gameplay is not relying on new content, there could basically be just one map and it wouldn’t change a thing.
And lastly, it’s made beautifully, so much clever design work has been put into this game, to achieve such great visual fidelity with such a limiting engine… I often think about how a UE5 version could look like, then I think, f**k it’s like 90% there already! Just doesn’t make any sense🤯🤯🤯
ngl if they turned that clean ass cgi work into a rocket movie I think it would be good
Right?
I like this a lot, a nice counterbalance to all the doom and gloom content being pushed by most of the large creators.
There is something about my Est. 2015 title that makes me feel nostalgically happy, but also ashamed because I'm not that good at the game lmao
Finally a take that’s actually positive, what a breath of fresh air.
Every sport - basketball, soccer, football, etc, has stayed pretty much the same throughout its history, and RL is just the same. Granted not a typical “sport” game like fifa or 2k, but a sport nonetheless. For as long as people compete in it, it can’t die.
Good vid Gizmo, removing RL from Steam was missed and was such a bad move.
Thanks!
I agree,
I still use the Steam Launcher to this day haha
what kept me around is the gameplay could care less about menial stuff
NO *$#%ING WAY PSYONIX CREATED ONSLAUGHT IN UT2004 ?!?!?!?!
Game hasn't died to me yet because I still want to hit cool shots
Hey man, loved the video. Is there anyway I could speak to you privately?
my experience with my over 1000 hours on rl is that epic wanted to rake in the money from rl without providing the content updates to an equivalent degree as fortnite
It's a completely different game than anything out there and the skill ceiling is endless for the average player... there's always something to strive for unlike other games that get repetitive pretty fast....
Just passed to 1000 hour border after playing the game casually from 2015 to 2021 and re-installing it this summer, I can't grasp why Epic is making this classic fun game a cosmetic focussed money bag, it's such a shame
It's weird that they haven't banned the customization of the car in the bakkesmod yet
this video deserves way more than a sub.
Thanks for watching :)
legends never die
Dang, this is the first I've heard of them removing player trading. It's amazing how long the game has lasted despite Epic constantly making it worse. It's just because the base of the game is so solid.
yooo class video bro but personally i think you should add “… but it’s not” to the end of the title for more clicks
Great video
I'm not going to stop playing I guess, but each time I find myself spending more and more time playing other games
Same.
This game is great I love playing with friends it’s a fun time, but even when my friends aren’t playing I still enjoy it solo. Still has plenty of potential.
banger vid
I thought I'd neve leave the game but here I am, happier..
A little Change i'd like to see in Future Updates: an Option like "allow crossplay" but for "play with steam players only". It is NOT Fun to play against Smurfs from other Platforms whilst you're still playing with your 8 Years old Account + matchmaking itself is truly a problem (Diamond is the new GC)
I'm mad at myself because I didn't commit all the time I had to play games on rocket league. I started when it released and I could've easily been a pro if I kept playing consistently but I didn't
This generation’s Smash Bros. Melee
Honestly for me it's simply because you can jump in a game in 1 minute from turning your Xbox on and it last 5 minutes and then your done as a busy person a dad and a loving partner that's the main reason I keep playing it
Nice vid
RL is the only game I play, I grew up on Super Nintendo and N64 and took a break for about 15 years on video games but after getting a PC capable of gaming I tried different games and RL just is so unique. I grew up playing sports so I think that is why I relate to it so much. In other sports games like NBA2k or Madden or Fifa a lot of the outcome is decided by the game, for example in madden you can get called for a holding penalty that was one of the 10 players you don't control or you can drop a pass even though you hit the right button. In NBA you can miss a shot even though you did everything perfect. In Rocket Leauge everything is so consistant and relies on what you do. Yes you have real life team mates and it can be frustrating it's still all about the skills you learn and you can only learn them by playing over time.
I wish epic games wasn't so greedy. Like if it isn't fortnite, epic games just doesn't care. Look at how much they have added to fortnite in the last year and look at how much they're added wth Rocket League. It has just been reskins of old maps and more overpriced cosmetics in the item shop. That's it. Although the game is so unique, there are so many new features epic could add to the game that they don't. Its just the same old game. The community is working as hard as they can to keep this game alive and Epic Games is trying to kill it. Its honestly sickening. I really hope epic games realizes their stupidity and stops favoring fortnite and nothing else. I really hope that Rocket League can somehow come back and we can get a good game for all to enjoy. Sorry for the essay-length rant but thanks for making it to the end :)
Gotta get the zombas soon lmao
I do t play it as much I went back to turbo golf racing lol
The idea that a game is dying when it can still pull 500k concurrent players at the weekends on all platforms is simply ridiculous
Bro opened my eyes
I am kind of mad that I started on PlayStation then took a long break then started to play again when it was free in 2020
"Why is this extremely unique, free, cross-platform game not dead yet!?!"
I just want a volleyball mode, or at least an easy way to do customs with friends. Even if it’s on pc (sorry console friends)
Volleyball exists on the mobile version but its extremely rare to find a match for it
Why it isn't dead is not only because players have heaps of overburden (items), but also because the game is just too unique.
Everybody ever since the invention of the car would've been interested in seeing a car push/hit a ball into a goal.
The digital world made this exceed everyone's expectations (if there were any in such deep untraveled voids yet), as no one
saw what the limits would be (come) after years of evolving.
...and it has not reached a sealing yet, as possibilities seem to be endless in this new concept.
The same goes for the monetization of the game. Not only is it interesting for real car brands (awesome to see Lambos and Porsches in the RL styled - rocketed design), but also for other sports comparisons like football and soccer (Hoops in the future?), and possible other sports coming like golf, tennis, aso...
The trick now, is to keep corporate interest balanced with community input and ideas.
1 - They released too much free content over the years - Regular players have thousands of items that probably will never get traded, leave alone the black market blueprints that are totally useless and obsolete when not bought, and die off in an endless pit of bm bp's in player's databases, and that can't be good for the servers, or loading capacity of the player.
2 - There is the unspoken problem of having so many cars, while still using the Octane/Fennec for all plays.
We see players use the unconventional choice of car in casual and new concept game modes. So that is where they need to put in more effort and development.
The more they can emphasize the difference between 'casual play' and 'competitive play', the better the game will get.
They need to invest a lot more in the competitive side, especially the background organization part of it towards more
local tournaments, to then have the nationals everywhere, that precede the world championships.
That would be the motivator/promotion for the competitive side of the game, while having more casual modes (like technical
race tracks, and more new concepts) could be the stimulator for the casual approach.
If the game keeps adding, without expanding usage options, it will bury itself under itself.
I've never understood why people think trading is so important. I've personally had trading disabled from day one.
The removal of trading made me quit after playing every day for 4+ yrs
Because the foundations of the game are incredible. At its bare bones it’s the best game ever made in terms of longevity
not the best but still really good, id say Minecraft is above it even tho i dont play it
Its alive despite epics best efforts
i've never cared about cosmetics or crates or anything, as long as they don't do ads or change the physics, idc what they do.
