Watercolor plein air setup (ON A BUDGET) ✶ Seawhite Plein Air Sketchbook & New Palette + Swatches

  • Watercolor plein air doesn't have to break the bank. If you already own your watercolor tubes and want to take your journey outdoors, there are lots of ways to do it on a budget. This kit cost me under £20. The cheap, small plastic palette allows more mixing space than my previous metal tin. The new sketchbook is the Seawhite of Brighton Plein Air Sketchbook for Watercolor. With thicker paper than their travel journal, I was excited to see how it performs. Plus I LOVE the spiral binding. #watercolor
    Materials:
Seawhite of Brighton Plein Air Sketchbook for Watercolor
    Frisk Plastic Folding Palette (Small)
Watercolor paint: tubes that I already owned.

I use a palette exactly like the one u show here. It’s called a Loxley, & only cost a few ££. I’ve used it for years - in the UK, in Scotland, in Canada & in the Caribbean, for plain air work, without it coming apart in any way. It’s tougher than it looks & has a great arrangement of mixing spaces & paint wells & is so very lightweight for travel. I prefer it to any of the other palettes I have, whether plastic or the heavier (very expensive) metal ones, which I tend to reserve for studio work. I simply love the Loxley for outdoor work.

I just painted this scene from the screen using the actual photo of the scene, here in South Australia! Thanks Sarah. 😀It is 36C today so am stuck indoors.🤪 I love painting water-landscapes because of the reflection of light, more than landscapes.

I love these palettes. I had one for my student grade paints and then bought another when I upgraded to artist grade paints. They look big but they’re light and super low profile. I always travel with it, it’s really the only one I use.

Heh I have Schmincke's Potter's Pink and Perylene Violet in my travel palette as well. I also love their Perylene Green - it neutralizes into a perfect black when mixed with Perylene Violet and is a great mixer. Loved the idea of pouring water straight onto the palette, placing and holding water containers has always been an issue. Main reason I can't take this type of palette out on the field, I usually use metal ones and place water containers using magnets or just use the Portable painter palette that fits snugly around my knee with its water containers on. Your method of using half of the palette for water makes a lot of sense for this setup!

Hey Sara, I am a huge fan of your work and online classes since a year or so. Love your palette, even though you updated it :) I am watching this video and paused by the color chart. I have many colors from brands you use. Your researches helped me a lot to choose my brands and colors and also how to find my own palette. On this particular palette of yours, I would exchange M. Graham Blue with Daniel Smith opera rose (bc I love to paint flowers), DS Hansa Yellowfins with DS New Gamboge and Schmincke Yellow ochre with Schminke Vanadium. This bright yellow gives me some neonish greens or neonish oranges and I love these mixes. BTW: Have you ever tried Roman Szmal watercolors? It is a polish brand with gorgeous colors for landscape, mostly single pigmented. They dry in a different consistency or touch than the other brands I also use (Schmincke, Daniel Smith, Holbein, Winsor&Newton). And they work great with colored pencil on top. In addition they are very affordable on Jacksons´ Art, especially on promotion. Another question, I can't hold back: I would love to hear your opinion on maimeri blu watercolors from Italy. Did you try them out? Keep being you. I really enjoy following your artistic journey. Lovely regards from Germany :)

Thank you for sharing this. Beautiful pic. I did one plain air painting - it was wonderful and felt so good to do, though my skill level is no where near as good as yours. You’ve inspired me to get out there and do some more. I’d like to keep my art supplies in the car, so it would be easy to just stop and paint on the fly. Do you think paints would hold up? Maybe palette paints? (It is hot and humid in the summer here.)

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Před rokem +2

Yes absolutely - watercolor is the most hardy of all the paints. I've left my palette in the car in freezing snowstorms, and super hot weather (on the dashboard in the sun). It's probably best to keep it tucked in a "cool" spot in the car, like under a seat or something, but still. It'll work.
      Enjoy!

People really overthink the plein air thing. If it's not too big you can bring it. If it's too big just find something smaller. There's really no special equipment you need. You can probably use what you already have unless it's some huge heavy porcelain palette.

Hi! New subscriber and an admirer of your talent here. I have a question concerning Plein air... you see, I am not a proper artist,I grab my paints or whatever takes my fancy on a whim( meaning,no consistent practice and a burning desire for cutting corners whenever it's possible.Guilty. And it doesn't really matter,if nobody sees, what I am up to. Which is lucky in most cases, let's be honest!
So, yes...Plein air... going outside...where PEOPLE are...even if 5 seconds ago there wasn't a living soul around you...then PUFF ! Suddenly, they are all around you, some trying not to look( thank you!),others...standing behind you, pretending, they are not looking- and you ( I mean,I) are in the middle of particularly nasty bit of sketch, conscious of THEM, staring at your ...well...failing attempt at a (put whatever I was aspiring to depict in my sketch book) . And I see in their eyes disappointment and even can hear " imposter"... through my mind ears.
    I did it twice. 😄
Afraid, I have not guts to do it again, which is a bummer, everybody knows, there's nothing better, than drawing from life.
    Help? Please?
    Any suggestions?
Thank you ❤️ for your wonderful art and your videos, best wishes sent your way!

Oh man I totally feel you! Two suggestions: ALWAYS find a place slightly "off track" where it would be awkward for someone to stand behind you. Like even just a little bit away from a trail would help. Rarely anyone makes that awkward step. 2nd: If you are in a more popular area, have headphones. If you notice someone approaching from a distance, pop your headphones in with something great to listen to (podcast or whatever). That will distract you from thoughts that anyone is looking, AND it makes it less likely they will approach you
