Bom quando foi revelado a sua idade, me lembrei de Meliodas dos Sete Pecados Capitais, que vivera por mais de 3.000 anos tentando libertar Elizabete da maldição... Pois o herói também tinha mais de 3.000 anos e já estava cansado de defender a humanidade e ansiava pela morte!!!.... Recomendo forte mente esse anime!!!... : )

Why did he hsve to be killed
he didnt in the end. they showed him that he could break his code to "SAVE THE WORLD". basically he had a voice saying that over and over again since he was created. They showed him that he could live in the peace, instead of trying to get things to fight again to save the world. because his code is to save the world, if you cant save the world right now his code told him to make a situation that requires saving the world.
he survived and joined the demons to rise against the evil humans that turned on him

What do you mean by dead? What died was the hero's voice in his head who made him want kill the demons but the mc didnt died he just stopped the voice and joined to the demon team
technically that is the hero leo dying then as he did that to stop/kill the voice in his head.
