Dude just wanted to say you have been an inspiration for change in my life. I remember watching your rebuild series on the ZX1400 and that made me go back to college to learn motorcycle mechanics and now three years later I have just purchase two motorbikes from auction to repair and sell on. I know this is just a passion of yours and you do it for the fun, but you should know that you have helped a young guy find his passion in life as well. Many thanks HeroRR :)

Whew, this hit home hard man. I was a mechanic in the army for 9 years. Got out, did tractor trailers work, don't like it, did land rovers, that's pretty decent, thinking about doing motorcycles. My buddy just gave (yes gave) me a 2003 vfr800. I'm gonna restore it and see how I like working motorcycle and riding 2 wheels again. I have a feeling this may lead into something I love.

@@benfrank1583 I’ve done plenty of heavy equipment and trucks also, bikes are a Breeze to work on in comparison and a lot more fun. Once you establish a good reputation people will stick with you because bikes are their toys and they won’t trust just anybody. I wish you the best of luck and success, I’d love to open a small shop as well. I plan on doing mostly restorations, they are the most fun and you’ll learn a lot.

My '98 VFR had sat a while under previous ownership, and the brake fluid was so gunked up that, even after thorough bleeding, there was some crap in the secondary master cylinder that blocked a check valve, leading to the rear brake dragging hard on the disc and overheating it on a short ride.
It took me a while to figure that problem out, figured I'd share in case it helps you avoid an issue with this build.
Also, you probably know about various avenues to de-link the brakes. I ended up keeping the link and getting Galfer stainless lines, but if I did it over again, I might go with Superhawk fork lowers, and F4i rear brake. There's lots of options, and the linked brakes are pretty nice most of the time.
Long time fan, was stoked to see you got a 5th gen! Can't wait to see the rest of the build!

Old man tip: When an engine sits that long, it's smart to lubricate the cylinder walls before cranking it and crank it by hand first with new oil in it. There is rust in there. 🥷

When swapping the rear-shock for a new Yss on my 1997 Vfr750f, the collector or pipes didn’t need to be removed. The Centre-stand also stayed in place.
The swinging arm nuts were loosened- moved roughly 8cm rearwards which gave enough clearance to remove the old shock and whizz the new one in.
A special tool was needed to loosen the swing-arm holder which went onto a half-inch ratchet. Buying that part saves masses of time and is worth every penny (or cent).

Great to see you rescuing this bike, I had a 2000 VFR great bike. While your working around the throttle bodies check the linkage, mine where sticking really bad! With you there on the aesthetics of a left mounted exhaust. Tyga makes a left mounted exhaust for the RC36 and it looks absolutely killer. The downside is that it requires you to remove the center stand, and I'm sure that's the reason why Honda switched to a right exit exhaust for the street bikes.
