One of the best things about living and working abroad is learning about different cultures and different ways of speaking. Singapore has four official languages (you can get away with only knowing English) but the fifth (and unofficial) language is Singlish. It's an English-based creole language that includes words mixed in from Hokkien, Malay, Teochew, Cantonese and Tamil.
In this video we tell you our top 10 favourite Singlish phrases.

Regarding the open coffee shop, the female version of the petticoat (we seldom wear this any more, so it refers to any sort of pieces worn to be hidden under the dress) longer than the dress - her Saturday is longer than Sunday. I find this hilarious when I learnt it from my friend, and I am still learning from my friends even though I am a Singaporean. The latest I learnt this year is Commando style, meaning skipping wearing underwear.
kangcheong spider..
more likely like “relax ah dont panic”
support from SG!
Thank you!
Haha, you have learnt so much, Singlish.
Thanks Eleanor. It's definitely a language you need to learn if you live and work here.
How long have you guys been in SG? You have caught the gist of singlish phrases!
Hey Matthew. Nearly 6 years now and before we were in Malaysia for 2 years.
Kan cheong is actually cantonese. 😊 Walau Eh is my favourite! Flexible to be used in every situation depending on your tone.
Good to know! Thanks SANNEDEE 😊

Thanks for subscribing 😁 I think it still took us time to assimilate, but we have been here nearly 5 years now.
Kan Cheong is actually Cantonese. In Chinese it’s 緊張 (jinzhang).
OR 紧张
is zhang traditional chinese?
Yes, it’s a common Chinese family name.
IM A SINGAPORE LAH
I'm a Singaporean
Do you guys use Singlish with you fellow countryman, especially those who have been n here for awhile?
The phrase "Don't play play' is actually a direct translation from Malay word "main main" , dom not proniounce it as main, but ma in
Oh wow! Great to know. Thank you for sharing! 😊
Not really . In every dialect the meaning is the same. Don't play play. Try saying it.
What abt. Alamak!😊
Yes la
nice video. I wonder if you'd get a Singlish accent?
Haha. Who knows? I don't think our accents have changed much since we moved abroad but our parents probably think so
@@ThatLovellBolandLife live in Singapore for another decade and your accent will definitely change without you realising it.
Think it would be 1 full episode if you were to do on the word, "Can".
We think so too 😂
walao eh... come, I clap for you!!!!

@@Paul-gj9sm We love discovering more about where we live! Luckily Phua Chu Kang is on Netflix, so we’re leaning a lot! 🤓
English: "See, I told you so. You didn't listen to my warning and now you've made a mistake."
Malay: "Kan?"
So much easier in Malay (and straight to the point too!)
Like that huh, what to do......

Do you know that the Singapore government is very concerned about the usage of singlish in the sitcom PCK Pte Ltd. The Prime minister at that time was worried that Singaporeans will pick up broken English and it will affect the country’s global competitiveness.
Yes! We saw the Goh Chok Tong speech on CZcams. It was really interesting to see how a sitcom made it's way into a national day rally speech. We've really enjoyed watching PCK on Netflix over the last few weeks too.
Yes, I remember the govt's comment which set PCK to improve his English and one episode had him saying in a very ang moh accent - this plum is very.... sng 😂😂😂😆😆😆
But Singaporeans feels more connected when speaking in singlish. Ads that uses/spoken in singlish will be remembered more easily than those used in proper English.
The full phrase of talk cock sing song is "talk cock sing song play mahjong"
Good to know! Thanks 😊
Alot of these are a direct translation from the hokkien example "Catch no ball". But sadly these days the new generation speak less of their dialect like hokkien, teo chew,Cantonese. I guess its mostly mandarin, english n singlish that is spoken more. I believe at least our malay n indian still speak their own language which is good. In future our chinese folks may not be able to speak their own dialect except mandarin.
My teacher used to say to the class during math “You did not catch the ball I throw” we were so confused the first time he said that 😂😂😂
I am a Singaporean how we save tables for our friends or family we put something to mark the table like hand sanitizer or tissue paper or like my parents use me to mark the table
