- Bent Bow Outdoor Productions presents this next video in the series "The Complete Bow hunter". This video simplifies and takes the mystery out of fine tuning your bow / arrow combo to achieve perfect arrow fight.
As a new archer this was one of my self diagnosed issues with my shooting. I had no idea why arrows were entering at an angle (what I now understand as very tail left) and it certainly didn't seem right. This video was crystal clear and you're a wonderful presenter. Though I now know the issue, with only about 15 hours of actual shooting under my belt I will hold off on the arrow tuning until I'm a bit further in. With a 72" bow as a 6'3 guy I'm concerned with resulting in a draw length that is then uncomfortable to me but it's really useful know in my book of notes and research why this is happening so I can have a list of errors to correct next time I'm at my local archery store.
This is the most effective teaching I have seen on the subject. Thanks!
Thanks for thge kind words of encouragement. I too have been involved with traditional archery for a very long time. I don't pretend to have all the answers but I hope some of my experince can benefit others in this great sport. God Bless and shoot straight!
Great info brother thank you for sharing!
Most comprehensive video on Traditional Archery Tuning I have found.... Great Thanks!
Great video
Wow! That was great. Thank you so much for your efforts helping us become more ethical hunters.
Best video on tuning bow and arrow combination I have seen. Thank you
God bless you too! Love your videos. Good luck this upcoming season.
best dozen minute i've spent watching this video. Thanks you sir.
I have been in the archery sport a very long time and have heard so many people tell something that I knew for a fact wasn't right! You have explained it as well as anyone could. I agree with you. I do the same as you with a few different thing that for the most part are the same. The public needs more accurate videos like this one!
Great video you make it easy to understand. Thanks so much!
Most informative video I have seen yet
Very informative, and great advise. Thank you very much.
Very well explained. Thank you for posting. Greetings from Germany.

Great video. I'm going to do what you said as soon as my stuff comes in. Thanks
Great vid Ron, cheers my friend.
Thanks for a great video, I always think once those arrows are tuned in for that particular bow, then all the other problems are down to you Good luck jv
Great video. I have a long bow on the way and I'm going to do what you said to tune my long bow. Thanks
Thank you for your great explanation, I subscribed at your channel to learn more about this great passion that we don't have much information as good like yours here in Spain. God bless you.
Best i have seen, Thank you. Grüße aus Deutschland
Great video! Thanks!
Thank you. I am 72 years old and a beginner trad wanna be hunter. Great information
Great video!! Enjoy your channel!!
very good video. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing...
Good information. You have to tune a recurve or longbow to get optimum accuracy, consistency, and efficiency out of them.
Paper tuning can be deceiving if you have a poor release and can have you chasing your tail. I bare shaft tune as you described, but after 10 yards, I go to 15, and then 20 yards and shoot a bare shaft with fletched arrows to make sure they group together. I fine tune by trying lighter and heavier points as needed. I also fine tune by adjusting the brace height up or down slightly as needed. A shaft flying a bit weak and I lower brace height, a bit stiff and I raise the brace height. I usually twist or untwist the string three turns at a time when fine tuning.
Adding weight to the front of the arrow weakens the spine a bit, but adding weight to the back seems to stiffen them a bit. Because of that, I bare shaft tune with an arrow with the wrap and feather quills already on the arrows. By this I mean that I take a wrapped and fletched arrow and take a knife and remove the feathers but leave the quill. This better simulates the added weight on the rear that your finished arrow will have. And second, if you have a long draw length, on some bows (particularly shorter ones under 62") you may not be able to get rid of the knock high arrow flight. It will show up very graphically when bare shaft tuning and as a tiny skip in your flight when using an arrow. I have found that if you have tried everything you can think of and you can not get rid of it, try putting a stick on rest such as a Bear Weatherrest or Hoyt Super Pro Rest on the bow. I used to get frustrated with this just because I was hard headed and just had to shoot off the shelf, but in every situation that I have had where I could not tune a bow off the shelf, this instantly corrected the issue.
I'm so glad I read this comment, I've been wrapping my head around my bow the last two days trying to eliminate a nock high of about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch with no success... wish I'd have come to CZcams sooner for advice. thx brother.
Good video. Thanks
You are great good music too
Good video. I don't paper tune myself. My arrows tear bad through paper but my bare shafts group within 3 inches dead center @ 25 yards. Good enough for me. That's he whole point of tuning,
Thanks for the info. If a shooter has a poor release, as is very common, he needs to fix that first to have the tuning tell him much. A collapse at release makes all arrows fly bad and must be cured to shoot well. Then your tuning will be very helpful.
Thank you for this useful information. I will pass this information on to my Son. In Christ Alone
if u r arrow is to stiff and u have a high strand count string, and or a lot of puff style silencers you can lightin the string or switch to ff type. basically go for performance in the string and get quite a bit of arrow weakening power. works great on hill style bows too. thanks for the vidio.
that is the tip I was looking for I have some arrows full length that are just a touch stiff.
Thank you.
thank you brother
Great video tho. Will use this advice for turkey season this spring
Glad to assist Savage_Beast,... check the way it worked for Ron with his new longbow this turkey season on our site,... facebook.com/bentbowproductions Rodney
Very good
thank you again
Love that u put your faith out there and your knowledge of archery, i ear marked this video as a reference, ive watched lot videos , but this was so comprehensive and easily explained, thx and God bless u
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. God Bless and good shooting!
I have to tune a full-length shaft! Because my draw length is 32.5 inches, so I have to do a little bit of playing with them to get them just right. My broadheads are about a quarter of an inch in front of my bow riser🙄😎
I have the same target but mine gots no middle from where I used to shoot NASP competition great video btw can't wait to transition from compound to recurve
Thanks for the kind words John and best of luck with the transition. You are starting an adventure where they may be no return!-God Bless!
+Bent Bow Outdoor Productions Thanks God Bless!
I really appreciate this video. I had trouble finding it and was worried you pulled it for some reason! Glad I found it! ✝️
Thank you so much for your love of Christ and your videos. I shoot a Bear Mag48 at 50lb. Trying to tune arrows. I have carbon GT 340 and 400 been cutting and cutting still knock left. should I try something with lighter spine. Suggestions welcome. God bless
Hi Ronnie-----Thanks for the kind and encouraging words. Remember that your bow is measured at 50 lbs. at 28 inches so you will loose approximately 3 pounds for every inch under 28 that you draw. Sounds like less spine weight is needed but you can also decrease spine by adding additional point weight. I have a 250 grain point weight on my arrows but you will have to experiment to find what works best for you. The added point weight increases my forward of center which is highly desirable. GOD BLESS!
Good
Very nice. need a segment on nock point. TU
Love the worship music & content!
New sub from Nor Mn.
God Bless Ya!

Great to hear from you Lalix,... we hope you join us on more adventures! (Bent Bow Staff)
I don't hunt, as of yet, but my groupings are getting better, and I think I might be ready for deer, this year. Don't worry, I know my limitations, so if I don,t think I'm ready yet, I wont go out, haha. Anyway, though, I've had a question that I cant find much information on.
When I start to hunt, I'd be using single beveled broadheads. My arrow fletchings are right wing feathers, so I'd get right sided bevels on the broadheads. Read a little about it, right wing feathers make the arrows spin right (clockwise). But, the feathers are fletched in a left elliptical on my arrows, so they'd spin left (counter-clockwise).
So my question is, should I get left bevel broadheads, or get my arrows refletched in a right elliptical? I'd assume get them refletched, as the right win feathers and left elliptical would be opposing forces, making the arrow spin less (or maybe it has even more dissadvantages than that).
Hi John------I haven't had much experience with right or left bevel broadheads but i would go with right fletch for right bevel as you say. I believe the force curve of the feathers especially five inch feathers would overcome any steering of the head bevel. Dr. Ed Asby has some fine info on this so I would suggest using his suggestions. Best of luck when you do hunt and God Bless!
Peace be with you.Praise be to God.
Does this apply to compound tuning as well?
Yes Keith. I see no reason it would not apply. Although you will have more tuning ability to tune the arrow to the bow with a compound.
I can't my bow also. The left and right are just a little higher left and lower right respectively.
How do you add heavy weights to the arrows? I’m having issues finding anything over 125 gr im trying to set up a super Kodiak at 55lb and a sage sammick at 40lb. I’m new to this and very intrested in perfecting it, thanks!!
The carbon shafts we use from "Gold Tip" have a threaded weight system behind the insert making it easy to add extra weight behind the arrow. You will find plenty of how to info on. "You Tube" if you inquire about arrow F.O.C. which stands for forward of center in the arrow world. Good luck in all you do and God Bless!
Thank you my brother in Christ .
what are u to do if u have a 31.5 draw
Nice recurve, what brand of longbow would you recommend? God continues to hold me. Mark Chambers
South Cox of "Stalker Stick Bows" makes great longbows as well as recurves. Another great longbow maker is Mark Smetzler of "Bow Makr". God Bless!
Great video. My arrow keeps on falling off on my recurve rest when shooting off the shelf. Can you give me some tips on how to keep it from falling off when I draw it back. Thank you sir
Thanks for the kind words. Usually arrows coming off the shelf can be eliminated by doing a couple of things. I can't or lean my bow to the right about 25 degrees when I shoot. I also shoot split finger style and use a "deep hook" three finger hold on the string that tends to roll the string a little and push the arrow against the side plate just a little when I draw and come to anchor. Remember to continually push the bow out as you draw the string back. Get more help with correct shooting and form by watching you tube videos from "The Push" and "Trad Geeks". Keep practicing and good luck with your shooting.God Bless!
what bow is that? best recurve tuning vid
Bow is a Stalker Wolverine. Thanks for watching and God Bless!
I agree with your tuning process but everything I have ever heard or learned about target type is opposite from what you say. I have always been under the assumption that a bag target is what you want to stay away from.a foam block will take the hit of the arrow and give you a true reading
The "bag type" backstop idea actually came from Byron Fergusen, one of the worlds greatest traditional archers. Did a view tests myself with several types and had to agree with him. Seems to work for me at least. Thanks for watching and God Bless!
Ron , could you please share the bow and Bowyer and you set up arrow and weight. ty blessing Mark
Hi Mark:
My bow is a Stalker Recurve, 60"length, 56 lbs.@ 28 in draw. I shoot off the shelf. Arrows are Gold-Tip Kinetic Pros 400. Arrow weight is 630 grain, point weight is 250 grains. Arrow length 28".---------Ron
Do you trim of the nock end of the arrow or remove the insert and point each time to trim?
I had used plastic wrap and pressed insert into front of shaft so I could pull out before each cut from the front. You are correct however and it is easier to pull off nock and cut from rear.
@@bentbowoutdoorproductions4343 doesn’t cutting off the nock end change the “Built in FOC arrows?”
@@ronbrown8559
@@ronbrown8559 not with bare shaft.
What if you cant your bow
At 8:32 you said, "And of course up and down - that's nothing more than your nock point"... but you never said how to correct. Which direction do you move the nock point for tail high vs tail low?
Sorry--------If arrow enters tail high bring nocking point down approximately 1/16 inch at a time until straight. If arrow enters tail low do the opposite. Good hunting and God Bless!
Taking almost two inches off your arrow means your are shooting an under-spined shaft, that is, it is too flexible. You need to go up in your arrow stiffness and tune from there. Also people with a long draw cannot afford to cut so much off their arrows!
That's why you took the two inches off to make it be spine perfectly for his liking. When it's shooting perfect you can't argue with that.!
Excellent video...however there is no reason for that distracting back ground music. You are trying to educate us, NOT entertain. Get rid of the music
please stop the background music madness!....otherwise great vid!
You are the 1st person that I've ever heard say bare shaft tune into a bag target that is absolutely positively wrong .a bag target has loose fibrous fill that makes your arrow go any which way it wants on impact. you need the consistency of a foam target to bare shaft tune
Appreciate the comment Mike however one of the best traditional bow shots in the world, Byron Fergusen, also bare shafts with a bag target. God Bless!
Hate that Chinese song.

Yes--You are correct! We've also found that by decreasing string brace height and sliding string silencers further closer to limb tips will also increase power thereby giving more arrow weakening power as well. Thanks for the encouraging words and God Bless!
