• You get free transfers on the bus and subway with OMNY like you do with a MetroCard.
• You can purchase OMNY cards at select retailers throughout the NYC area and at OMNY card vending machines at select subway stations.
• Reduced Fare MetroCard users can switch to OMNY by using the Digital Assistant on the lower right side of the OMNY website.
The future of OMNY:
The MTA plans to make OMNY available as a payment method for commuter rail and Access-A-Ride paratransit users and to phase out the MetroCard.

Thank you, great one
You're welcome!
Thank you. Questions. 1. How do you get transfers when you use OMNY? 2. Can you pay for two people using OMNY with your phone?
Hi, You automatically get a free transfer when you scan the same device or card within 2 hours. For example, if you scan your phone to take the subway then scan it again to take a bus within 2 hours, you will get a free transfer on the bus. Yes, you can scan 4 people in total with one device or card with OMNY, yourself and 3 other people, and they can all get free transfers, too.
@@appsites Thank you
@manofomega5268 You're welcome!
Very informative ,thank you so much! I have one question; when i use a credit card in apple wallet , do i need to make the OMNY account?
Hi, No, you don't have to create an OMNY account when you use a credit card in Apple Pay.
@@appsites Thank you so much! I have a plane to visit NYC next month. It's first time in NYC, so I've cheked using OMNY and taxi etc. I'll try to use Apple Pay.
Very informative, thank you so much! Just one question; Is Metrocard still available? Because I have got to know that the MTA would be scraping the Metrocard and its vending machines soon!
Yes, Metrocards are still available. You can still buy them and refill them at Metrocard vending machines at subway stations and some bus stops. They are supposed to be phased out in 2024.
@@appsites hmmm right! The initial plans were to scrap them by 2023 but the MTA authorities informed in April 2023 that these plans have been postponed indefinitely, so that's why I was confirming. Thank you for letting me know 👍👍
Yeah, they keep pushing it back. Let's see what happens.
Very informative! I have a question … how do the transfers from train to bus work? For instance, I took the 1 train southbound to Times Square and then tried to transfer to a crosstown bus and was charged both times!! I thought a transfer should have worked then?
Hi, Transfers work the same as with MetroCards accept it won't say free transfer when you tap with OMNY. It will just say go, so your transfer should've worked, but with OMNY, you may still see the charge, but at the end of the day, the charge will change to Zero if the trip was eligible for a free transfer. Also, you have to tap with the same card or device.
@@appsites got it!!! Thanks so much for confirming!
@sammiecheco6239 You're welcome!
Hi! Does this work for the LIRR? Traveling in from Central Islip to Grand Central. Hope thats right haha Thanks!
Hi! OMNY is not available on the LIRR yet. The MTA says it should be available on the LIRR during the next phase of the rollout, which is estimated to be 2025, but that could change.
So when traveling from Glen Cove I have to buy just a regular ticket for the LIRR and then use OMNY pay after transfer to the metro ? So unfortunately I understand that LIRR rides will not add to the 12 fare cap tickets, am I right?
Great video! I'll be in NYC for 3 days in May and expect to take Transport in 12-15 occasions. If I use my credit card, do I need to create an OMNY account and link to my credit card in order to take advantage of free transport over 12 transports? Thanks
Hi, Thanks! Enjoy your trip to NYC in May! No, you don't need to create an OMNY account to receive the 7-day fare cap. Just use the same payment method to pay for your trips, and after 12 paid trips, the rest of your trips for the week will be free. The 7 days start from the first time you use your card.
Thanks to reply quickly. If, for security raison, I want to have an OMNY card. First, I need to buy a OMNY card at a retailler near my hotel. Then, can I add money, like 33$ in a Subway station like 42st Port Authority? Then I will be ok for the rest of my 3 days vacation! Thanks!
@bobvila1010 You can buy an OMNY card and fill it up at a retailer like 7-Eleven, CVS, Walgreens, etc. You can also buy OMNY cards at OMNY card vending machines at certain subway stations.
Merci beaucoup @@appsites (Thank you!!)
Will the Nassau county NICE buses ever take OMNY? Currently they take the MetroCard, what will they do when the MetroCard is totally phased out?
Hi, I haven't found any info stating OMNY is coming to NICE busses. It would be great if it did. I know NICE busses accept the GoMobile app as a payment method. That's available for iOS and Android phones if you want to try that.
Thank you for your reply. I don’t go to Nassau thatOften. I have some doctor appointments that require me to go into Nassau county but not that often enough. It would be great if they took the Omny card and not make people have a special app. I have not seen anything about nice buses, dropping MetroCard and only use the GoMobile app which I have but never put any money on it cause I don’t go out to Nassau county often to do that.
Is there a such thing as a unlimited omny card like the unlimited weekly metrocard?
Hi, No, there isn’t an unlimited OMNY card, but OMNY has weekly fare capping, which allows you to get unlimited rides after you take 12 rides in the same week (7 day period) and pay with the same payment method.
So 12 rides to fare cap works regarding do you have or have not an OMNY account or it is required? So currently there is no option to track that rides ?
Hi, You don’t need an OMNY account to do fare capping. You just have to use the same credit card, debt card or smart device 12 times in a 7 day period, and all additional rides are free for that week. No, you can't track rides anymore. Hopefully, that will change in the future.
@@appsites thank you !
So just to be certain in day 8 after first usage my rides will go to 0 or this counter is rolling through days. What in mean by that is whether in day 8 I will have collection of rides since day 2 to day 7 ? Or just straight 0 in day 8 ?
Yes, after 7 days, your rides go to zero and start all over again. It's similar to how a weekly unlimited MetroCard starts from the day you first use it.
How do I use the tap to pay if my 10 year old is with me? Can i tap twice to pay for 2 fares?
Yes, you can tap for you and three additional people with OMNY. Just tap your smartphone, smartwatch or card before each person walks through the turnstile.
Can you pay with cash an OMNY card? Can you refill it with money with cash?
Yes, you can refill your OMNY card with cash at certain retail stores like 7-Eleven, CVS and Walgreens or at OMNY vending machines, which are at select subway stations.
What a joke, waste of money. If it aint broke dont fix it. The metrocards had no issues
Time to move into the 21st century Grandpa.
That’s why the MTA lost a lot of money people just go in the back of the bus 🚌 pretending like they pay and not paying nothing
It's more convenient to pay for your MetroCard at home on your phone or your computer, rather than pulling out your wallet or credit card to put money on your MTA card, while the homeless guy is watching you do this. It's much more convenient, and often SAFER after all, it's NYC.
