- Rin Tin Tin, born on the Western Front in 1918, became one of the biggest movie stars of the silent film era. Greyfriars Bobby gained his fame for guarding his masters' grave for 14 years, until the day he died. Bounce, Admiral Collingwood’s loyal companion, would hide below deck during the Napoleonic Wars, and Collingwood would sing to him after battle, to calm his nerves. Nixon's dog Checkers saved his political career, but never lived to see the White House.The wolfhound Gelert, who died protecting his master's infant son, and Blondi, Hitler's German Shepherd, were both put to death by their owners. The Tale of Gelert and Llewelyn is remarkably similar to the Tale of Cú Chulainn and how Sétanta became the Hound of Ulster. I'm surprised Tom didn't know that. Having grown up knowing both stories from childhood (summers in Beddgelert, Gwynedd and winters in Nenagh, Tipperary) it was only when I landed into my 20's that I noticed the similarities, and I could only deduce it is a very old Celtic tale with many differing versions. Myself, I think Sétanta takes the biscuit.

Lassie was of course a character, not an actual dog. She dates back to an Elizabeth Gaskell short story. During the 40s and early 50s she was played by a male dog called Pal, who lived to be 18 years old. Pal was a skilled actor, able to switch genders, in Son of Lassie he played Laddie.

Dominic has a serious issue with differentiating Nixon and Hitler, I had no idea he was such a child of the 1960s.
I feel like it's mostly played up for comedy here, in the Watergate episodes I think he shows alot of empathy for Nixon, compares him to a tragic Shakespearean character
I remember hearing Nixon's "Checkers" speech and Nixon was a great actor, no doubt about it !

So but um there is no mention of Fiona Glennanne which makes this list and or title wrong. Should be "some" of the greatest dogs ever....
Hang on.. there's a debate about which breed GF's Bobby was? Whichever one they decide on.. he'll be the only pure breed street dog in history!!!!
