- The History Guy podcast features two stories of fraudsters, who despite their less than honest lives deserve to be remembered. First is the story of Titanic Thompson, supposedly the inspiration for Sky Masterson of Guys and Dolls, who was so good that he cheated Al Capone at a bet - and made it out alive. Next is Stanley Weyman, a man who spent much of his life pretending to be someone else.

I am sorry to sound defensive, but to be completely clear, this is a podcast. If you do not prefer the podcast format, then don't listen. We produce podcasts every other Tuesday and offer them wherever podcasts are found. In addition, we post them after about a month delay here on YT because some of our audience has requested them. We fully understand that it is not the preference of all THG fans, but no one is required to listen to all our content. We continue to post our new video content usually every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The podcast is posted here in addition to that schedule for those that enjoy the format.
I love them.
I really like these podcasts. I can't believe people are complaining...but then again, nowadays, the way some people are, I can. Sad. They are sad.
Still, a few photos of the persons and subject matter under discussion would be highly instructive. Otherwise, it's a lot like eves dropping on two people talking, but not really knowing who or what they're talking about.
I dont know who was talking down on this format but they obviously dont spend a ton of time on the channel. Ill have your videos going over my speakers sometimes while i do work around the house. The podcast makes complete sense and I love it.
Anything posted by The History Guy, regardless of format, is interesting, informative and fun. Well done Lance and family!!!
I usually listen to History Guy, I don’t really watch the screen because I’m usually doing something else, so I appreciate this format!
I always like when a channel doesn’t rely on visuals too much for the same reason. I’m always bummed when a video starts out good, when I’m working on something, then 5 minutes in I have to pull off my gloves and figure out why there’s no more talking
I enjoy these pod cast and what gets me people who complain about the adds will watch a TV show with commercials and not think twice about it
That lemon wouldn't have been the only thing full of buckshot if Big Al had caught him cheating.
Good morning Lance and Josh. I enjoy your stories very much.
Love these podcasts, especially the "round table" discussions. Keep up the great work!
I love these fantastic stories, it was great hearing them again. Sadly, these antics could never be replicated today. Thanks Lance!
yes yes yes, but at the 1st break, The Cat was trying to say something and you guys spoke right over it ~~~
"It had been a good night for Thompson, before the killing." I find that nights are generally better for me, before a murder happens. 😁
Great work. Keep it up
You all are missing an important point about titanics trade craft. He was a "prop gambler", a prepositional wagerer. The folks that bet him knew what prop gamblers were. They knew that they were getting the short end even if titanic made it seem opposite. The marks couldn't help themselves. They had to try. Back then there was a whole community of gamblers, work was hard to come by. To call him a fraud is a disservice. It was a different time. You can not judge someone today for how they lived then.
Heck yea, I could totally see ppl knowing the guy is a "prop gambler" and that being the reason they wanna take a chance to be able to say they beat him
Makes me think Harry the Hat from Cheers
I didn't know you had a podcast!!!
I'm so happy lol
me too lol
I enjoy all of your posts! The intro music was too loud though and it was difficult to hear what Josh was saying over it. I think it's awesome that you and your family do this together and that everyone is involved.
I love the podcast ! Great job i love watching or listening ti either
Starting off with a comment saying I love the channel and wish you the best, get the 'rithm going. I'll leave another after I get me some context on the vid! Love you guys, keep it up!
It fractures me how similar Lance and Josh's voices are, but on the phone people regularly mistakenly thought I was my mother.
This was interesting and I enjoyed Heidi's viewpoint as well.
If he'd been a brain surgeon, no-one would ever have made a podcast about him
Who wants to hear about a boring old brain surgeon?
I have a feeling he’d be a spectacularly infamous brain surgeon, much to his patient’s demise.
@@jamesogorman3287 Interesting thought.
Wow! You guys really built your channel!
Hey, a quick note on your graphic. I thought, at first, that you were something about THC, then I realized that it's THG. It would be cool if you did a history of weed in North America. Not just the recent unpleasantness focused on the drug war though.
Puff, puff, puff; virtual pass.
Had no idea you did a podcast. Glad I found it though!
I love these podcasts, I bought a book a few years back about a person that forged people's handwriting who saved a few Jewish people during WW2, try to find out more about that book had me re-reading it a few tie it was that good.
That's an entertaining story as usual
Awesome stuff :) I think including Frank Abigail would have made sense for this episode but I'm sure there are many more to come
Hate to complain but an ad in the beginning, a long introduction and another ad plus popup ads? Too much. I love history but will go to sources I don't have to wade through to get content.
@Mck Idyl
Or any other free adblock extension. Personally, I use Ublock Origin. Works even better than Adblock Plus, in my opinion.
Good job
Speaking of "Catch Me If You Can". I loved that film. And would love to see a THG episode on Frank Abagnal.
Ty
Thanks Lance and Josh! 💜
Is this the same as what I've seen on Spotify?
Great Podcast -😀
( Sound a bit 'wobbly' in chat section... can that be looked at for next episode? )
Ok here's my second one, getting into the "rhythm".
This podcast is better than an "earful of cider"!
**snare-snare, cymbal**
Background music is way too loud, please, I can’t hear the intro.
17:15 'He could've been anything'
History cat "not a cat"
This tone of disdain with Thompson rings false to me in light of the tone of the telling of the tale....and the absence of THG shows on brain surgeons 🤣 I think it was Joseph Campbell - the famous scholar of mythology - who put it best when he said, "I don't believe people truly seek meaning in life. Rather, they're seeking the sensation of being alive." Plus, the great mythologies in our recorded history always include trickster gods who were more popular than both the mighty and the good ones. Thompson's life is very much a hero's journey IMO.
Please guys do a segment on the Walnut canyon dam disaster of 1890 killed hundreds also involved a host of historic Arizona figures and a drunk on a horse please.
Would have been cool if you covered Ferdinand Demara. He's really interesting as far as frauds go.
This sounds like a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino
Back in the day, you could pretend to be an important businessman, and you'd get to meet the President. Nowadays, you can pretend to be a successful businessman, and BE the President!
You know that he was winning bets in the nursing home throwing coins in cups winning other people's servings of their deserts
Hey Playboy, I heard about this 20 years ago that the Titanic wasn't sunk it was the Olympic.
I have heard the theory as well. History is always subject to interpretation. I have to admit I am rather skeptical of the claim.
@@TheHistoryGuyChannel You have to think it was a brilliant move besides all of the poor innocent people collateral damage ! To get rid of all your foes in such a way. If there's any problem (insurance or other insurance.
@@TheHistoryGuyChannel, As you should be as numerous items raised from the wreck are emblazen with hull number 401 which was the number given to Titanic. Like wise there are photos of the wreck of the name plate on the bow and stern removing any doubt of the switch theory.
What makes this very hard to support the theory is the name plates were engraved with the name to use as a guide for painting. The plates were actually part of the hull riveted together and not simply a plate riveted atop the hull plate. This would require disassembly of the bow and stern to a certain extent to remove those plates and replace them.
What also makes the theory hard to believe is the theory revolves around the fact the Olympic was switched with Titanic after the Hawke incident and sunk to claim the insurance money. Problem with this is Olympic and Titanic were only insured for half the cost to build the ships so to pull a insurance job on the damaged Olympic by sinking her in this fashion would be bad business as they wouldnt get all their money back. Like wise after Titanic sank all the lawsuits placed upon White Star nearly put them out of business due to the loss of life, the claims of lost valuables and the bad publicity which helped pushed more passengers to competitors such as Cunard.
Biggest Insurance scam is the price they charge. Yes they sometimes have to pay out. But do the math 101. Huge profit for them. Because you must have it.
cant hear the intro over the elevator music in the background.
Glad to hear you play Minecraft also. great game.
When it’s just THG, the counter goes
Tick…
tick…
tick…
When it’s THG @ Son, the counter goes
Tick-tick-tick-tick
Did I hear a cat meowing in the background?
I hope that was a cat.
Episode suggestion: why the 9 of diamonds is considered the curse of Scotland.
You sound just like Dad :)
Not about this piece. In your piece about the Toledo strip🎉, you didn’t mention the fate of Indiana if Michigan had won the battle. Indiana would have become landbound with no access to Lake Michigan.
Here’s an u related but possible story ‘for you. Every community, big or small has its local hero and local villain. In LaPorte, Indiana the villain, with a mysterious finish, was Belle Gunness. She was a rare female serial killer. of the early 20th Century.
Ooooo I got another, and this one's real good. r/actlikeyoubelong they take the ethics out of it and it's all about convincing others you're allowed to be there. It fits perfectly with this video.
Wait, did you just say that if he killed more than one person in self-defense that somehow indicated he may have been at fault -- just on that fact alone? Please tell me you were joking.
Yes, I think if you are repeatedly put in a “its him or me” situation, that suggests your life choices are involved. Realize that the vast majority of us make it through life without killing anyone.
@@TheHistoryGuyChannel You have no proof, zero. You could be blaming a victim because your circumstances were better. I had more respect for your logic.
@@mountainhobo What I said was that he chose a dangerous profession and put himself in dangerous positions, and so it should be no surprise that violence was the occasional result. None of us made any accusations regarding the deatails of any event. I have no idea why you find the concept so offensive. It seems rather obvious that a man who made a living defrauding others was at least partially responsible for the violence that resulted.
why no visual video!!
This is our podcast which we share on Tuesdays here. The two stories can be found here in my original videos: czcams.com/video/dQhkksZYZcs/video.html
and czcams.com/video/TDj_GCBDYAw/video.html
I usually enjoy your work but as hard as it was to make it through the too long introduction and the usual worthless, irrelevant and annoying advertisements, I turned it off at the five minute mark I realized 42 minutes would be impossible
Godlessness
As interesting y'know and entertaining actually y'know as always actually. I love history y'know and never miss y'know the _History Guy_ actually y'know, but there was y'know actually something kinna y'know that bothered me actually on this y'know podcast actually but y'know I can't y'know actually put my finger on it y'know actually.
Seriously, thanks,
S
I'll stick with the videos, podcast is full of filler
42nd
I don't like the podcasts when I'm expecting a video.
I especially feel insulted when the podcast starts with a video ad and then ambles loudly into a sponsorship diatribe.
I’m reading the comments because I didn’t like the one I wrote and was hoping someone did a better job Thanks I turned this off early
@@vidguy007 I didn't bother listening to it all. But I bet it ends with buy merchandise and visit my patreon. Sure the guy needs to make a buck but don't abused your audiences patience and good nature.
How were we not completely clear that this was a podcast from the get go? We post videos usually three times a week. The Podcast is posted in addition, and if you do not like the format simply don't listen. Yes, in order to do our work, we have to get paid. Our support for Magellan TV is not, by any standard, a "diatribe." Your comment, on the other hand, is.
