  • Hop onboard MV Trollfjord and enjoy the most scenic sea voyage in the world - from the colourful historic warehouses of Bergen to the arctic landscapes of the far north. This trip was taken in April 2022, beginning in warm sunshine and ending in blizzards. In addition to Bergen, the film takes in stops at Ålesund, Trondheim, Bodø, Svolvær, Tromsø, Honningsvåg and Kirkenes. The final section features a replacement bus service that crosses the Finnmark plateau and follows the remarkable frozen River Tana aside the Finnish border.
    This film focuses on the incredible landscapes and the remote ports. For more practical details regarding the time allowed in the various ports and the food provided please see my earlier Hurtigruten films - also on the Travel Obscurer channel.

    So many familiar places to me. I live in Finland and have been in many of those places from Bergen to the far north, but I have done my journeys by my motorhome. My dream is to make that Hurtigruten cruise some day.

    I was in 15 or so when my journalist father who wrote one of the first accounts of the Hurtigruten for a mass audience (Reader's Digest), so it was the summer of 1970 or 1971. Back then it was not the popular tourist trip it is now: yes, there were passenger cabins, but it definitely felt more like hitchhiking on a commercial ship.
    As sometimes happens, odd memories: I liked visiting the engine room (still can smell it - probably diesel), discovering and liking the Norwegian equivalent to the European Orangina drink onboard called "Solo". It's still a thing in Norway today. The beautiful wooden architecture, especially the stave churches that looked something out of a medieval village.
    Then an embarrassing moment where I did a stupid young teen-age thing: as we crossed the Russian border briefly in a bus, I yelled out something dumb like "Shoot me, I'm American" to a Russian border guard who had a gun outside of the bus. My dad smacked me for it, and I deserved it.
    But I still have fond memories from our stay in Bergen and the whole trip itself. A unique experience with unmatched scenery and towns visited along the way.

    Brought back nice memories of our 12 day B-K-B trip on the Kong Harald in February 2020. We didn't manage to get upto the Cape either due to snowfalls but how incredible was the winter scenery. Like your mum we fancy doing the summer voyage to get contrasting perspectives. Thankfully we saw the lights a couple of times. Norway is stunning, and expensive!

    I knew you would get punished for all that nice weather between Bergen and Bodø. April is the time for it of course, but you can't make it all the way up that coast without at least seeing a cloud.

    Did you see the northern lights or was it too cloudy or not the right season? Thinking about doing something like this but the idea of going in the dead of winter doesn’t seem like as much fun as April.

    • @TravelObscurer
      @TravelObscurer  Před rokem +1

      Not really the right season and it was cloudy in the very far north. Seeing the aurora is so hit and miss that if I were you I would prioritise the landscape. Personally I can't see much point in doing the voyage in the winter when there's little daylight and the weather is at its worst. In April there's a chance of the aurora during the short nights but it should be seen as a lucky bonus.

    We are considering a cruise of the Norwegian coastline from Oslo to Honningsvag, however, I am concerned about sea sickness. How rough was the voyage? Whih time of year would you recommend for the least chance of experiencing rough seas?

    • @TravelObscurer
      @TravelObscurer  Před 8 měsíci

      From Bergen to Honningsvag most of the voyage follows channels away from the open sea. The rough seas that I have experienced were when the vessel sails from Honningsvag to Kirkenes as the Barents Sea can be tricky at any time.

  • @scottsteiner9429
    @scottsteiner9429 Před 8 měsíci

    How many ports were there? Did you feel rushed?

    • @TravelObscurer
      @TravelObscurer  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The only ports where you have 4 hours are Ålesund (depending on the season), Trondheim, Tromsø, and Honninsvåg. 4 hours is just enough to get a flavour of the place but can feel rushed. It's all about the voyage.

      Hurtigruten is not a cruise ship. It is an ordinary coastal route that transports people and goods along the Norwegian coast. Although it also has a scheme for tourists, it is a vital necessity for the people who live along the challenging Norwegian coast.

  • @naren2k6

    I looked into this cruise and sadly the amount of time in each port is not enough time to eat let alone see anything, so I would definitely choose a different cruise, Other option would be to catch Hurtigruten on a point to point trip and make your way up the coast instead of a 7 day trip, so you get ample time to explore the great country. These are just ferries that carry goods and passengers to isolated ports and they want to make extra money on tourists.

    Terrible service, no value for the money. This company had a monopoly far too long. And still everyone believes what the perfect Hurtigruten marketing machine is trying to make us believe. And since everyone paid so much money for the trip nobody admits that it was not money well spent. We had bad experiences and Hurtigruten did hardly anything to support.
