  • River Smallmouth are among the most migratory of all Bass species, travelling in excess of 30 miles per year. Al and James Lindner go on the hunt for a fast-moving school of river smallies in the heat of summer. Current is a focal point.

Ok here is a tech question about smallies, I have seen massive smallies in a blue ribbon trout fishery, I normally fish for trout in this river but after seeing these massive small mouth bass in this river I am not opposed to going after them, but cannot get anything over a half pound to jump on, this is a crystal clear free stone river issuing out of the high country and is dependant on snowmelt so the season's are, low flow in the winter, low Flo in the early fall, spring is still low flow but summer brings high water and cold water temps, I have launched many attempts to hook up with one of these monster smallies and even spent the night to fish with natural "bait found in this river" steathlfull approach and everything else I could think of and cannot get a hookup. Any advise would be welcomed.

For crystal clear water I like too use jerkbaits they’re probably your best bet use a natural colour and for soft plastics I like Ned rigs or a craw on a jig

Wooly bugger and clouser minnows should work I tie them in browns and work them like a crayfish or a minnow. You could also Palmer some sinker and leave a tail. Poppers work for me once the river gets to its summer level. You don’t have to get all technical with your leader I do a 6 for w 0x tippet

If you’ve found smallies that won’t hit live bait, you’ve found the smartest smallies ever. All I could suggest is extreme stealth. Don’t get in the water, match your clothes to the color of the banks, move slowly, minimal false casting, long, fine leaders, and a good imitation of their forage. An interesting puzzle I’d love to see.

  • @timsoutdooradventures3004

just a question, have you ever heard of smallies eating freshwater clams whole? i know other fish can digest them n eat them cant a smallie do it to?
