Tomato and Vegetable Blossom End Rot Treatments: What It Is, Two Ways to Fix It, What Doesn't Work

  • I highly recommend you turn on annotations for this video. I add key points. Blossom End Rot (BER) is the browning of the bottoms of tomatoes and other fruits. It can be addressed by ensuring your plants have consistent watering and readily available or soluble calcium in the soil. Eggshells don't work for emergency treatment. I explain why.
    I also state copper nitrate spray, I should have said calcium nitrate spray. I have an old brain.

    Thanks for saving my tomato crop this year! I live in Central Texas (Zone 9) so we're a few weeks ahead... I plant seedlings on 3.15 outdoors.... again this year I started to experience BER. My terrific local garden experts always encourage use of bone meal but it isn't successful for me. Rather than loose the crop I treated aggressively using garden lime/vinegar (2x a few days apart) and used calcium nitrate spray on the foliage. Great advice that worked perfectly after many years of experiencing BER!

    I appreciate your approach to gardening. I call it "common sense gardening". Staying as organic as practical and deviating when necessary. I do the very same thing. The only thing I try to keep totally organic is pesticides, insecticides and herbicides because most, if not all, of the chemical types can be detrimental to your health. Even so, I had no choice but to use Sevin in my garden this year because all of the organic methods failed to control a terrible infestation that would have completely destroyed all of my cucurbit crops otherwise. Common sense gardening.

It is what you would buy in a spray bottle for blossom end rot that costs like $9 a bottle. We sell it in powdered form for like $13. You would need a spray bottle. Im not trying to sell you but suggest a water soluble form of calcium that you can put on the leaves. However, if it doesnt work, I really think something in you soil is locking out calcium to your plants.

    Gary, love the approach, but I thought it would be worth mentioning I have a minor in chemistry and I went through the reaction chain and 2 mole of CH3COOH + 1 mole CaCO3 will yield (CH3COO)2Ca + CO2 + H2O which is Calcium acitate, carbon dioxide, and water. Calcium acitate binds phosphorus in the soil which is a key component in soil bacteria and can also hurt the flowering and root development of the tomato plant (leading to other problems later on). Adding some bone meal should solve the issue. But my biggest concern would be if you have epsom salt in the garden which I know you advocate and many gardeners also use, it can bind with the calcium acetate and create calcium sulfate (good for plants) and calcium magnesium acetate which is ice melt. It is a super dangerous salt which can kill plants.

      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před 8 lety +2

      Thanks. Good to know. I know I am a bit more liberal with the chemical salts but find minimal use along with regular compost and organic ferts like bone meal and blood meal seem to work. I am more curious about how calcium magnesium acetate could form. I was wondering why snow doesnt stick to my raised bed soil. Appreciated.

      Gary Pilarchik I mean it isn't likely because it is more likely to occur in a lab, but in theory it could. I like that you are offering so many options for people to fix their problems though. I don't think enough people do it and thank you for adding that egg shells won't fix the problem right away... it drives me nuts the "pinterest" myths out there.

      Hey I was just looking up bone meal trying to figure out how much Ca is readily available for something like emergency BER. I saw a product called liquid bone meal that states it has immediate calcium available. Basically it is really fine grinding of bone meal. Do you have any thoughts on it. What I researched is coarsely ground bone meal take a long time to break down, as you get to a finer pulverization, the Ca is much more available. Of course now I cant determine the grinding of what I use. Just curious. I am looking into purchasing 50 pounds bags of bone and blood meal for my gardens when I move. Trying to learn more about them.

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener Před 8 lety +7

      Gary Pilarchik bone meal does have readily absorbing calcium but not much. The best form of readily available calcium is called fast acting lime. It is lime that is very loosely held to it's carbon molecules. It breaks down even quicker in the presence of soil bacteria. But it is important to not add too much or it can upset soil pH. That is why personally I use gypsum in my soil. It takes a little longer than lime does, but if you get micronized gypsum (or make it yourself) the particle size makes all the difference in the availability and absorption time.

    Just a thought for concentrated solution of both calcium and magnesium would be to purchase a $.68 bottle of carbonated water, 32oz, chilled and adding 3 tablespoons of milk of magnesia, without the chlorine inactive ingredient, which should only have purified water, shaking it, then refrigerate about 30 minutes then shake again until clear; then adding a couple of tablespoons of calcium chloride that you buy from the canning or pickling section for under $5. Then just add an ounce or so to a spray bottle and spray the plants or mix the whole bottle in a couple of gallons of water and pour a cup onto the root section of the plant. This concentrated solution, without the calcium, is magnesium bicarbonate which is bioavailable and goes straight to the cells without having to be broken down, and it would cost about $65 to purchase. Just a thought since everything has to be broken down to its smallest form which is chloride

    Gary, thank you for another very educational video!
    However, this conflicts with another video that you've made.
    What is a better solution to cure mid-season BER. A slurry of water and lime or eggshell dust dissolved in vinegar?
    And can I spray either of these mixes on the foliage, for potentially a quicker absorption?
    Thanks Gary!!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  Před 6 lety

      Either actually. The slurry should just be used 1x and I do that for the mid season emergency on the roots but don't use it on leaves. The eggs shells can be a foliar feed. Those are organic but I sell calcium nitrated on my seed shop. It is 100% the best and fastest. Foliar feed and and root drench. Nothing but free calcium. It is made by reacting calcium carbonate and nitric acid. Just like eggshell and vinegar but not classified organic. I just give options for people as they like to do different things. Only one choice is needed though.Please check out my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com

    Hi Gary. Thanks for this video. I do have a question for you though. I have about 12 tomato plants in my raised bed and out of all of them, there is one particular plant that seems more susceptible to blossom end rot. It is a German Queen. Almost every single young fruit develops the rot. There is one other plant (mortgage lifter) that had rot on a few other fruits but not all of them. Why would only one of the plants be mainly affected and how to a do localized treatment? Any idea would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

      So you can add lime around the plant and try and get in some calcium. I sell calcium nitrate at my shop. You wake a liquid and feed and or spray the leaves. Some plants are just more susceptible. The root systems of tomatoes go way out across the surface so it is unlikely you have specific calcium deficiency in 1 area.

I have 5 varieties of tomatoes this year, and only 2 of them are having a problem, even though they get the exact same amount of water all the time. The second gallon of water you mixed you said was calcium nitrate to spray on the plant and/or feed the base for blossom end rot. Near the end of the video, you refer to the second bottle as copper nitrate to spray on your plants for blossom end rot. You also said you make copper sulfate by using copper wire and acid to make a Bordeaux mix. A Bordeaux mix is a 'fungicide' and it isn't made using acid, it's made using lime. In your defense, you did say "It gets confusing" ...let's see, nitrate mixes with copp, no calcium, but calcium is the nitrate...and sulf... Oh well, I'll figure it out. Brain cramp. It is calcium nitrate not copper nitrate. The acid creates the copper compound copper sulfate used in the Bordeaux mix. Granted the mixers don't have to use acid but the compound they use is created. General point is some products deemed organic and synthesized by people for components. Copper sulfate is made with sulfuric acid and copper.
