My Advice to Young Priests: Follow Your Gifts

  • Friends, in accepting Holy Orders at a presbyteral ordination, a priest promises to conform his life to Christ, our high priest. And just as Christ took, blessed, broke, and gave away himself in the Eucharist, so too does he take, bless, break, and give away his priests to minister to his people.

What is most important and astounding is not so much how enthralled we are by Bishop’s words, but how the clergy around him are hanging on every word. Play this video again and see how taken they are. Please Lord be merciful when it is his time to be broken.

Unfortunately it was difficult to focus on the homily because my baby decided she wanted to give a homily too (you can hear her at 5:38 and other various times). Thank you for uploading this so I could return and listen again to this powerful message. I think much of what is said is true for all vocations. Inspiring for us all. Praise God for these holy priests. May He bless them and protect them!

  • @jsam1997
    @jsam1997 Před 14 dny

Catholicism is work salvation, please turn to Christ in faith as the Bible clearly says we are saved by grace which translates to CHARIS meaning "unmeritted favor/free gift." quite literally. There is a Reason why Paul says in Romans "for the wages of sin is death, but the FREE gift of God is eternal life through christ Jesus our lord." Again grace's literal translation in the Greek is "unmeritted favor/free gift." Salvation is completely free all you have to do is believe that what Jesus did for you 2000 years ago actually worked. He died as a substitute for sin on the cross for you and me because the penalty for sin is death, if the penalty has already been paid and "by grace you have saved through faith" then all you are doing is believing that his payment was for you, a.k.a excepting it and believing you have eternal life as a result of his finished work (and of course believing he rose from the dead as a dead savior can't save you.) The reason you cannot add a work to Christ's finished work is because as Paul makes clear in Romans 11:6 "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." You aren't under grace if you add something to the gospel because grace must be unmeritted for it to be attributed to you. Again, you are just trusting in what Christ already did for you, that's why in ephesians Paul says "after you believed, you were sealed with that holy spirit of promise, which is the GUARANTEE of our inherentance until the redemption of the purchased possession." Paul can't use the word guarantee here if salvation is partially based off of something you do, as obviously YOU can fail in your efforts meaning there is obviously no guarantee. But if it is entirely based off of what Christ did, then there is a guarantee.

Explain what is the theological and spiritual purpose and rationale behind the Transubstantiation, when Jesus said about the Last Super, "do this in memory of me"
And Jesus then sent the Holy Spirit to the apostles after He had ascended to heaven..
It took 1200 years for the Church to enshrine the transubstantiation of the Eucharist in doctrine but the early church Fathers claimed the Eucharist, bread and wine was only a symbolic but solemn and spiritual commemoration of Jesus' redemptive sacrifice on the Cross....
Early Church Fathers describe the Eucharist as symbolic, spiritual and solemn ..
Early Church Fathers state that Jesus' language at the Last Super was was ultimately intended to be understood in spiritual and symbolic terms. Here are a number of examples that demonstrate this point:
The Didache, written in the late-first or early-second century, referred to the elements of the Lord’s table as “spiritual food and drink” (The Didache, 9). The long passage detailing the Lord's Table in this early Christian document gives no hint of transubstantiation whatsoever.
Justin Martyr (110-165) spoke of “the bread which our Christ gave us to offer in remembrance of the Body which He assumed for the sake of those who believe in Him, for whom He also suffered, and also to the cup which He taught us to offer in the Eucharist, in commemoration of His blood"(Dialogue with Trypho, 70).
Clement of Alexandria explained that, “The Scripture, accordingly, has named wine the symbol of the sacred blood” (The Instructor, 2.2).
Origen similarly noted, “We have a symbol of gratitude to God in the bread which we call the Eucharist” (Against Celsus, 8.57).
Cyprian (200-258), who sometimes described the eucharist using very literal language, spoke against any who might use mere water for their celebration of the Lord’s Table. In condemning such practices, he explained that the cup of the Lord is a representation of the blood of Christ: “I marvel much whence this practice has arisen, that in some places, contrary to Evangelical and Apostolic discipline, water is offered in the Cup of the Lord, which alone cannot represent the Blood of Christ” (Epistle 63.7).
Eusebius of Caesarea (263-340) espoused a symbolic view in his Proof of the Gospel:
For with the wine which was indeed the symbol of His blood, He cleanses them that are baptized into His death, and believe on His blood, of their old sins, washing them away and purifying their old garments and vesture, so that they, ransomed by the precious blood of the divine spiritual grapes, and with the wine from this vine, "put off the old man with his deeds, and put on the new man which is renewed into knowledge in the image of Him that created him." . . . He gave to His disciples, when He said, "Take, drink; this is my blood that is shed for you for the remission of sins: this do in remembrance of me." And, "His teeth are white as milk," show the brightness and purity of the sacramental food. For again, He gave Himself the symbols of His divine dispensation to His disciples, when He bade them make the likeness of His own Body. For since He no more was to take pleasure in bloody sacrifices, or those ordained by Moses in the slaughter of animals of various kinds, and was to give them bread to use as the symbol of His Body, He taught the purity and brightness of such food by saying, “And his teeth are white as milk” (Demonstratia Evangelica, 8.1.76-80).
Athanasius (296-373) similarly contended that the elements of the Eucharist are to be understood spiritually, not physically: “[W]hat He says is not fleshly but spiritual. For how many would the body suffice for eating, that it should become the food for the whole world? But for this reason He made mention of the ascension of the Son of Man into heaven, in order that He might draw them away from the bodily notion, and that from henceforth they might learn that the aforesaid flesh was heavenly eating from above and spiritual food given by Him.” (Festal Letter, 4.19)
Augustine (354-430), also, clarified that the Lord’s Table was to be understood in spiritual terms: “Understand spiritually what I said; you are not to eat this body which you see; nor to drink that blood which they who will crucify me shall pour forth. . . . Although it is needful that this be visibly celebrated, yet it must be spiritually understood” (Exposition of the Psalms, 99.8).
He also explained the eucharistic elements as symbols. Speaking of Christ, Augustine noted: “He committed and delivered to His disciples the figure [or symbol] of His Body and Blood.” (Exposition of the Psalms, 3.1).
And in another place, quoting the Lord Jesus, Augustine further explained: “‘Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,’ says Christ, ‘and drink His blood, ye have no life in you.’ This seems to enjoin a crime or a vice; it is therefore a figure [or symbol], enjoining that we should have a share in the sufferings of our Lord, and that we should retain a sweet and profitable memory of the fact that His flesh was wounded and crucified for us (On Christian Doctrine, 3.16.24).
A number of similar quotations from the church fathers could be given to make the point that-at least for many of the fathers-the elements of the eucharist were ultimately understood in symbolic or spiritual terms. In other words, they did not hold to the Roman Catholic doctrine of transubstantiation.....

By celebrating, the apostles became the body of Christ, in the same way the greatest miracle which is the conversion of the hearts passes through the Eucharist as the body of Christ. Without the Eucharist there is no Church, without the Eucharist there is no living Christ, it is like a flame that lights hearts from the darkness of the world. The Eucharist cannot be understood, it must be lived, it must be received. Like baptism that is administered (one does not self-baptize) this is how the Eucharist it works: this great Sacrament allows direct access to the truth of God.
in the Eucharist there is the "sacramentum" that is the visible aspect and the "res" that is the invisible meaning.
St. Augustine will say that the Eucharist is to be considered not so much in itself (in the nature of the body of Christ) but in its effectiveness in incorporating man into Christ: that is, building the church. The terms that the fathers use have become and sanctify. St. Irenaeus maintains that the process (of bread/body, wine/blood) takes place because the bread and wine receive the logos of God. S. Athanasius uses the terms of change of nature as the logos descends on the bread and the cup and both from a biblical and scriptural point of view holiness comes from God and sanctification is from god; in fact the Eucharist is barred to the non-baptized.
The term most used to describe the Eucharist is holy (St. Cyril of Jerusalem, S. Theodore of Mopsuestia) In summary, the Fathers affirm that the bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ since the logos or the holy spirit descends upon them and takes possession of them, just as the spirit took possession of the body of Christ and resurrected him.
However, just as for the apostles then who did not believe the women that Christ is no longer a beautiful tomb, so today in order to believe we must celebrate when Christ appears to the apostles? While they celebrate.. (Luke 24 clearer than that...)
To better understand what is meant by transubstantiation I recommend the decree on the sacrament of the Eucharist of 11 October 1551 which explains well what the real presence is; to the chapter IV explains that the term transubstantiation is the most appropriate as it means: with the consecration of the bread and wine the conversion of the entire substance of the bread into the substance of the Body Christ, our Lord, and all the substance of wine in the substance of his blood.
The essential thing I want to reflect on is that if the church from Christ to Peter until today exists it is because it breaks the bread and drinks from the cup. From the last supper to the first unique and final sacrifice which is Christ crucified and which we relive through the Eucharist we are constituted the body of Christ.
In summary, the power of the Eucharistic sacrament is always the same in the church of every century as it comes from God through the body of His son, without it the community would not have existed of the first centuries, neither the medieval one nor today,The best way to understand this immense gift (which is his body) is to do a very simple thing accept it and receive it.
(I'm not English, I'm not yet a theologian so for information contact your trusted priest/friar/nun/bishop, but the real ones, those who live Christ, but I think if you see them you will see Christ acting in them and you will understand the fruits of the Eucharist as the body of Christ: see Stephen see Christ, see Paul see Christ)

Is this a fallible understanding? Also consider John 6.

I believe historical evidence shows the early church celebrated Eucharist as symbolic and not as the transubstantiation, and that the transubstantiation was not what kept the church continuing 2,000 years..

You think the ECF support your novel doctrines. This is a simplistic theological summary and selective quote mining. A Sacrament, as Saint Augustine defined it (who you quote) is a Visible sign (symbol aspect) of an Invisible Grace. You clearly take the visible sign aspect and separate it from the spiritual reality (invisible grace). The Same Saint Augustine in litany of other writings speaks of a real presence of the Eucharist that is totally at odds with modern American Protestants, whose Eucharistic Theology is closer somewhere between Calvin and Zwingli. I am not going to cite the 20 to 25 texts where Saint Augustine says 100% opposite of what you are saying.
Saint Augustine in City of God Book 10: Chapter 20 (written between 413 and 426, Fr. Jurgens Faith of the Early Fathers Volume 3, 1979, page 97, Liturgical Press_
"And hence that true Mediator, in so far as, by assuming the form of a servant, He became the Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, though in the form of God He received sacrifice together with the Father, with whom He is one God, yet in the form of a servant He chose rather to be than to receive a sacrifice, that not even by this instance any one might have occasion to suppose that sacrifice should be rendered to any creature. Thus He is both the Priest who offers and the Sacrifice offered. And He designed that there should be a daily sign of this in the sacrifice of the Church, which, being His body, learns to offer herself through Him. Of this true Sacrifice the ancient sacrifices of the saints were the various and numerous signs; and it was thus variously figured, just as one thing is signified by a variety of words, that there may be less weariness when we speak of it much. To this supreme and true sacrifice all false sacrifices have given place."
Saint Augustine in City of God Book 16: Chapter 22
"Having received this oracle of promise, Abraham migrated, and remained in another place of the same land, that is, beside the oak of Mamre, which was Hebron. Then on the invasion of Sodom, when five kings carried on war against four, and Lot was taken captive with the conquered Sodomites, Abraham delivered him from the enemy, leading with him to battle three hundred and eighteen of his home-born servants, and won the victory for the kings of Sodom, but would take nothing of the spoils when offered by the king for whom he had won them. He was then openly blessed by Melchizedek, who was priest of God Most High, about whom many and great things are written in the epistle which is inscribed to the Hebrews, which most say is by the Apostle Paul, though some deny this. For then first appeared the sacrifice which is now offered to God by Christians in the whole wide world, and that is fulfilled which long after the event was said by the prophet to Christ, who was yet to come in the flesh, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek, - that is to say, not after the order of Aaron, for that order was to be taken away when the things shone forth which were intimated beforehand by these shadows."
Saint Athanasius in A Sermon to the Newly Baptized from around 373 [A Fragment dated found in a Homily of Saint Eutyches, Patriarch of Constantinopile from 582 AD: Jurgens Faith of Our Fathers Volume 1, 1979, page 345, Liturgical Press]
"You shall see the Levites bringing loaves and a cup of wine, and placing them on the table. So long as the prayers of supplication and entreaties have not been made, there is only bread and wine. But after the great and wonderful prayers have been completed, then the bread is become the Body, and the wine the Blood, of our Lord Jesus Christ. ‘And again:’ Let us approach the celebration of the mysteries. This bread and this wine, so long as the prayers and supplications have not taken place, remain simply what they are. But after the great prayers and holy supplications have been sent forth, the Word comes down into the bread and wine - and thus His Body is confected."
Your selective quoting of the Didache is to be charitable laughable. Chapter 9, which you selectively quoted. Nobody can partake of the Eucharist unless validly baptized {which is defined in Chapter 7, Matter requires Water and Form is the Holy Trinity}. Chapter 10 gives and early Eucharistic Prayer, much of which you will still see used in the Eucharistic Prayers of the Roman Rite Liturgy, as well as all Liturgies of Apostolic Churches. Chapter 14 in Didache further develops what to do on Sunday, gather to break bread, given thanks (eucharist) and then it closes with connecting the Eucharist to Mal 1:11 (I suggest you read that OT book)
Your theology is the either or, and can't reconcile the both and. Christ is the 2nd Person of the Holy Trinity, a Divine Person with a True Divine Nature and True human nature. Sacramental theology flows from orthodox Christology
