Good work, huge effort went into this. I know. 👍
and how appropriate after my 3 days to get home in the snow storm, quite literally planes, trains and automobiles. Wonder if the darker color of JWR had any impact? Just the mere suggestion of more malt and cask? Still, if I had to pick out of those it would be the JWR.
Drew deserves a rest and a reward. I know how many cuts there is in this project AND how many Photoshop files created 😛

“This is the darkest, it obviously has the most barrel age” um no. It is interesting that even experienced scotch drinkers can be fooled by fake color. If you do this again try to get some black glasses.

Duly noted on the black glasses, but in this line-up (at least for me...I bought the 4 bottles) there was NO hiding/masking the JW Red.... one whiff and you knew it! But even so, on the palate it was the better scotch.....but that's just me. ~Mark

J&B Rare comes closest to my taste preferences among the bottom shelfers that I've tried. It's got a nice citrus note and I think would work well in a highball with a lemon.

2:25 Dewars White Label (tried it years ago, but I had no experience with Scotch
    whiskey)
3:35 Cutty Sark, my favorite, though I prefer it as a Rob Roy or a Rusty Nail, I'll take it neat after I have had a Rob Roy to acclimate the palette.
    5:15 J&B Never tried it
7:35 Johnnie Walker Red - I tried it with Coke last year, it tasted like the smell of a used band-aid. I had already started enjoying bourbons and cognacs, so the ethanol didn't hit me as bad. Maybe it was the smokiness, I don't know how it's such a high-selling product.

Great blind side by side taste test! I haven't had J&B or Cutty Sark, but I prefer Dewars by a wide margin over JWR. I probably need to give JWR another shot though, because the last JWR I had was a 50ml bottle that may have been sitting around for awhile. It took a lot of water and ice to choke that little bottle down, but it was the only night cap I had available to me at the time.

Glad I stumbled across this video. I drink mostly better scotches now but a few days ago I saw an old movie and they were drinking Cutty's. So I bought a bottle, which I haven't had for decades. I had some last night and it was way worse than I remembered it, very grainy aftertaste. I have Dewars also, and find that much better than Cutty's. Several years ago someone gave me a bottle of J+B. I found that not drinkable and gave it to a neighbor who actually liked it. I have Walker black at home which I like. I'm also familiar with red and I find it drinkable, though many of my friends hate it. So my order would be
    Dewars
    Johnny Walker Red
    Cutty's Sark
    J+B.

So, check out our video on some of the older bottlings of a few of these.... if you can get your hands on a J&B bottled in the 80's grab it and I think you'll be very surprised! We were blown away by the difference in the older bottles and how much better they were than the current bottlings. It's like the current bottles are more grain and less quality! Interesting idea and great video. Forced to choose I would pick Dewars, but I’ve only tried JW Red and the Dewars. Would be interesting to try these blind to throw out preconceived notions, and to drink in dark glasses as to not be influenced by color. But in reality, if I’m traveling for a while I would bring a few samples from my own stash. Hard to go wrong there.

That was fun to watch. I always go with Chivas, but my uncle swears by Old Smuggler as his go to cheap scotch. As a sailor I want to like Cutty Sark, but it really has never tasted good to me. Most of these whiskys I would never drink neat, at the very least with ice, especially since they are just going to give it to you in a tumbler. What is most interesting to me is you did it blind. I know I have bias based upon brand and you took that away (which is good IMHO.) When we are talking these type prices, I think Canadian, Irish, and Bourbon are all in play for me. All on the rocks ;) But I think we do have to start drinking more with our pallets and not our eyes and reputations, with the exception of Springbank. I have never had a bad Springbank ever....

Dewar’s all day for me. JW Red has peat qualities, but it also has an acrid flavor I just can’t get over. Dewar’s doesn’t have as much peat, but it has a nice hint of it, and it’s way smoother and pleasant. Just my opinion. Now JW Black is better than Dewars 12, but not $7 better IMO…which is the price gap between them in my area.

What to do while traveling and don't have access to good single malts? Simple...bourbon. There are many commonly available bourbons that are better than the cheaper scotches in my opinion. A lot of bars, even in hotels, are stocking such bourbons as Basil Hayden's or Jeffersons Reserve to name a couple good ones.

We want cheap Scotch that won't make us puke or bankrupt. I dont care if it smells like oak, or firewood, cherries, honey etc. Im gonna put it in a glass over ice, then add some soda. Or make cocktails. I aint got $50 for a bottle of liquor. Well I do but I'm cheap.😢

Everyone loves to bash Red Label, but simply put, it is the low end of Johnnie Walker. I will put it one way as a Joke, "What do you call the a medical student who was last in the class but graduated with a doctorate? Doctor." So, Red Label is the low end of Johnnie Walker, but it is still JOHNNIE WALKER.. There are lower scotches than it!

      @Scotch4Dummies  Před 5 lety

Point taken, but having come from the JW Red beginnings just because it says JW on the label doesn't mean it's great! You're absolutely correct, there are most definitely some lower scotches out there! This particular video was just a fun idea after having traveled a lot for work with poor choices. I now pack my own, hahah! Thanks for the comment! ~Mark

I love the Johnny Walker Black and Green, but no, the Red is not good. Dewars is better and so happens to be cheaper. Dewars White > JW Red all day.

@@Shadx27 Nice! I also pickup Dewars 12 often….I’m looking for the new bottles now. Dewars 12, especially the new revamped version that’s matured in 1st-fill bourbon casks, is a very good blend for about $7-$8 cheaper than Black Label. Maybe it’s not as good as black label, but it’s definitely not $7-$8 lesser in quality. Cheers!

Cutty and J&B are decent. Dewar's is palatable. JW Red is horrible. If the bar has JW, pry open your wallet and get Black.

I get lemon and butterscotch from cutty sark. Couldn't stand it when i got it. Dewars is kinda metallic and acidic tasting. Jw red is just flat out appalling. J&b is decent just kinda light. I'd go with j&b, dewars, jw red and then cutty sark going best to worse.
