@newagetojo You are right, they are not an invasive species. Instead, in flocks as they customarily fly in, they will destroy freshly planted farm lands and will indeed attack nesting birds and destroy their eggs and kill and consume any nestlings since they are omnivorous. The same applies to blue jays which are also omnivorous and will raid other birds' nests, steal eggs, young birds, and even the nests. Grackles and Blue Jays are a detriment to every nesting song bird in this country and I shoot them with the same intent on bird conservation as I do the house sparrows, starlings and now the cow birds............

Yep. The European starling. I'm almost 56 years old. When I was a teenager I used to go out shooting starlings. We had absolutely millions of them. Now in the UK apparently starling numbers have dropped by 90%. And although I used to shoot them I didn't wipe all of them out. Lol I know you have way too many in your country and they are pests. But one thing I will say is that they do make a fantastic pet. A few years ago I rescued 4 and hand reared them. When I released them back to the wild one of them would not leave. It just keept coming back into my house. So I built it a lovely cage and kept it. It used to fly outside and come back in again. And it talked. I had it for around 5 years. Then it died. Apparently they have a short life expectancy. Thanks for sharing your video. Great shooting. 👍

They went in the English bluebird box and threw the 4 babies out onto the ground and made their nest on top of bluebirds nest. I opened the box and threw all their nest on the ground and burned it. Bluebirds came back, rebuilt and laid 4 more eggs rather quickly. The sparrows came back and built another nest practically overnite on top of the 4 eggs. Now i havent seen the male bluebird but I did see the female come back to the box once. I took all the sparrow nest out again and left the 4 eggs. I dont know if she is rejecting them because they might not be good anymore. Gonna have to open it and take the 4 eggs out. In the meantime tho, Im always at that window now looking for little brown birds. When I see 'em, 💥POW! The sparrows were in all the bluebird boxes at my cousins too so I put packing tape over the holes so they couldnt feed.

I too share your hatred for Starlings, Ted. Growing up on a farm in Upstate NY, June became one of my favorite parts of summer for the sole reason that after cutting hay, the Starlings would flock up in massive numbers and swarm around behind my home. I would let a 500-1000 bird flock drop into the yard or field, give them a minute, then let all of hell loose with two 12ga shotguns. Oh, the sweet carnage.
Again and again I would do this, only to see more appear around the farm as the summer went on. I may not have solved the problem, but it felt good to eradicate large numbers in each go. Kept me sharp for duck season, too, when later in the summer they where flying in smaller groups and flock shooting turning into passing shots out to 40 yards.

By age 10 I could take a Crane Fly off a Dandy Lion at 10yds, hit an empty 5 cent BB package tossed in the air, and my mom told me to leave longer stems on her Dahlias!. At age 13 I could hit a juice can at 30 yds with a Scottish pellet from a smoothbore Crosman pump, and at age fifteen I took my first grouse with my old Daisy after stretching the spring for more power!
I now have three Gamo break Barrell rifles dialed in at 50 yds.
A .177 Silent Cat Whisper, a .177 Gamo Magnum, and a .22 Gamo Magnum. The mags are fitted with Leapers mil dot scopes. I use all these for both target and pest control shooting. These guns can handle 500 rounds a day without problems, and I've done that for weeks. The only issue is lead buildup inside the barrels about an inch from the breach! I carry a rod and brush for that!
Anyway I like and look forward to your adventures, and hope you can keep them coming!

Yep. Starlings are a pain in the rear. I've noticed that where I am at least, the local robins seem pretty good at manhandling starlings away from the food sources so other birds can eat. Just yesterday had a mourning dove getting harried by a starling. Robin swooped in like a hawk and tackled it, then took off after the fleeing starling. The local robins seem to really hate the starlings. They don't like the blue jays either, but in spring and early-mid summer they seem to tolerate the jays better than the starlings.
I've also seen the finches decide to mob starlings that are being particularly annoying.
I don't personally actively deter/remove starlings, but I have nothing but support for those that do, so long as they are careful and not bothering the non-pest species while they are at it. Starlings are a destructive invasive species that tends to be nothing but an annoyance. They are also numerous enough that I doubt anything short of nationwide active destruction will drop the numbers enough to really worry about their continuance as a species.

It's really amazing how discriminatory they are as well. The robins, swallows, gold finches and house finches are totally comfortable when I'm out in the yard, and fly all over the place. The starlings and house sparrows are *not*, they haul immediately when I come out, I have to find a good covered spot and wait a while for them to show up again. And I can blow a house sparrow off the line not five feet from a bunch of house finches or something, and quite often they don't even fly. It's amazing!

To all who asked about shooting the Grackles and cowbirds. Recent federal law allows Crows, blackbirds, Grackles, cowbirds to be eliminated if they interfere with any agricultural operation including your home garden.

I recently discovered this gem of a law and made good on reducing the grackle population hitting my girlfriend's garden using a combination of .22 JSB Ultra Shocks and my Leshiy. At 18 feet. Was it overkill? Nope.

I can see a hole in wall or tree but a eaves trough?? just dumb... watching a projectile enter their brain pans is something i could watch over and over. As a kid growing up on a farm in North Central Illinois. I would ride my bike from farm to farm with my old Crossman 760, shooting pigeons for a dollar a bird and starlings for 50 cents a bird. Made enough to buy my next year's school clothes and keep me in BBs.

Starlings are annoying as heck. One time they made a nest in my airplane, and I could not get them out. They recognized the plane too, cause everytime I came back, they would fly back into the plane. When the finally mechanic opened up the hull of the aircraft, there were large piles of sticks and dirt inside it. Scary to think how much unbalanced weight 2 Starlings were adding to the plane.
I love animals, but I don't pity this bird. It's from England and it belongs there.

Thank you Ted. Sorry you still get grief from the haters that think ALL animals deserve love and a chance to live, ON THEIR HOME CONTINENT! I also used to wonder why these guys were so terrible but I enjoyed you long range shooting skills with the air rifles that I kept watching. Of course you did that really wonderful video of the full explanation of whys and hows of European Starlings and English House Sparrows in North America. Honestly I am really surprised and impressed you didn't pull your biologist card out since that is your profession. Yes I know your thing is technically not birds but I think it does add to your credibility regarding your pest control adventures. So even though I am okay with hunting in principal I just don't have the stomach to do it myself however I now, like you, hate these pest birds so much I have indeed taken it upon myself to rid my local property and businesses of these destructive critters. Keep up the awesome work and good luck at next Extreme Benchrest.

It's good to see you knocking off those starlings. They are every bit as horrible as you describe. However, there was no need to shoot the purple grackles at the farm, which are native and actually quite beneficial. As to the starlings, they are here because long ago, some dimwit with the power to make it happen thought it would be good if Central Park in NYC had all the birds that ever had been mentioned in Shakespeare's plays. To think how close we came to never having to put up with them!
