In Nov 2001 it was a tough time for everyone! It was 2 months after 9/11 and people were trying to find the right time to laugh again. The Emmy awards were postponed twice due to the terrorist attacks. When Ellen hosted its what we all needed! Laughter. I am so happy shes on TV again and is hosting the Oscars tonight! I am sure we will all be laughing and smiling just like we do everyday watching her show. Thanks so much for making our lives better Ellen. :)
Thank you so much for uploading this! I wasn't able to see it when it aired and have always regreted that. I heard that Ms. Degeneres did an incredible job. Now, thanks to you, I have seen it for myself. There's one less itch to scratch! My favorite line has to be "What could bother the Taliban more than to see a gay woman in a suit surrounded by Jews." Incredible.
I love the response she received at the end (7:15). I remember that the Emmys were re-scheduled at the last minute and Ellen was a trouper. Not an easy gig as 9/11 had just happened weeks before. I don't think she let her nervousness show until the audience gave her that ovation at the end.
Streisand brought the house down with an truly moving an awesome rendition of "you'll never walk alone" that left the audience in tears. A performance that will live on forever in tribute to the loss our nation suffered on 9/11. You can still find it on utube but it keeps getting removed for legal reason by the Rogers and Hammerstein organization. Ellens final sign off that night after Barbra sang captures the intense emotion of the evening. Wow!
Wow, the music back then was so chilly! Nowadays there are always trumpets and loud drums and stuff. I mean that's fine but this lounge-ish music is so...vintage.
Actually that was before the 2001 emmys. When she came out in 1997 they cancelled her show, Ellen. So she really wasn't able to find work from '98 to 2001, when she had the Ellen show, which didn't last long and then she got her talk show in 2003.

ellen didn't know at that time that she was going to get a standing ovation every single day at work for the next 10 years.
Isabella95K OMG you're right. It's so amazing to think about that.
It's probably not that exciting after a while, I'd imagine 😁
Not Sandra Bulock nor Jennifer Aniston.. but Ellen Degeneres that is truly America's Sweetheart. You people really adore her (:
"...I guess this is business casual."

I've watched this like 50 times
She killed that night!!
Seriously?!She still looks like how she used to look like 14years ago!And great humour as usual.
I missed the Emmys that year, so this is great, thanks for sharing all the videos!
Whoever thought of the idea 'let's ask Ellen' is a freakin' genius
The estimated timing when she paused for the cheering at 4:14 was perfect. I guess she's kinda used to that XD
Still a great monologue to watch! And Walter Cronkite's opening is still a heart string puller.
This Emmys would have been boring if it was not for Ellen, Barbra, Walter and that trumpet player I've forgetton the name of!
Ellen is in a dress! Ellen in a DRESS!

I want to see all the things/people she was introducing!
It's Barbra Streisand singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" w/ a choir and 911 victim's names listed behind them. It's extraordinary.
