To clarify something I poorly joked about in the video, the Mystery Berry from Giant's Lair doesn't work for getting Frost Relay. You need the Squash. I tried to sneak the true method of doing it in, but I may have been a little too subtle about hiding it.
Gotta be real, I don't care about that joke, since just GETTING FROST RELAY IS A CHORE. The Last Attack Medals are able to make Leif BUSTED, but it stinks just how BOOORRING it is to get them! At least you don't need to go to the Termite Kingdom. The Forsaken Lands' bushes have a decent chance of dropping a Squash(THANK GOODNESS, SINCE THE FORSAKEN LANDS IS AN INCONSISTENT, DISORIENTING, OVERLY-GIGANTIC *MESS* OF A LABYRINTH! Forsaken Lands? MORE LIKE FORSAKEN *_MAZE._* Really, I'm just thankful to find them there.), and the remaining ingredients are easy enough. But, MAN.... _MAN!_ Frost Relay is unforgivingly DISGUSTING(in an amazing way, trust me)! Sure, the Last Attack Medals are annoying, because of 2 tricky Bounty Bosses, but at least you can finish them both, as early as Chapter 4. All that monologuing, blabbering, and chatterbox-ing aside, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU DON'T HAVE MORE SUBS. This guide, the Golden Seedling Encounter Tutorial, AND THAT UNBELIEVABLE "LEVEL-ZERO SCAVENGE" PM:TTYD RUN, all incredible! Less than 5K? Criminal. You _deserve_ at least 10 times that, for making these awesome videos. Enjoy my sub, my Phatasmic friend!
Hey, I still saw it. No harm done. That said, this Skill is SO much fun to use against bosses. I've used it to OHKO bosses so many times, that it's downright unfair. I've even used Strong Start & Leaf Omelet's with Kabbu, to get TWO Frost Relay's, on the first turn! It's so crazy, how much this Skill can just turn bosses into mincemeat. Also, I give Kabbu 4 Defense(2 Iron Seeds, & Both Defense Exchanges), First Plating, Leaf Cloak, and Both Reflections, just to allow both Miracle Matter Medals to activate. Just Turn Relay a second turn to Leif, use a Queen's Dinner, activate Bubble Shield, survive the turn, lather, rinse, repeat, etc. Low on items? Sharing Stash, and abusing Bubble Shield Lite. It's SO BROKEN, and I'm glad you introduced me to this.
@@ShiningSilvally Ditto
@@PhantomAarantula Also, hilariously, I ended up pairing the Skill with the Everlasting Leif Strategy, that you've used. It's crazy, how easy it is to pair them. Heck, I've gone through the EX Boss/Mini Boss Rush without much issue. I don't even need to used any items, except for one Leaf Omelet, to end Devourer quickly.
You get the move from a weird wizard so that probably explains why it’s so weird.
Never will pretend to understand witchcraft.
Wow, this game contains ALOT of bugs
To think that frost relay is so glitchy
It really makes no sense in a lot of areas.
Yes.
like glitches or actual insects?
Both
Frost Relay feels like it takes both sides in the "Virgin vs Chad" meme
The knowledge it takes to unlock its full potential truly separates boys from men.
0:14 "look Gary there I am"
For real though, getting at least some basic idea for how to make the move's damage not fall off a cliff is nice
0:55 Fun Fact: You can also get Frost Relay by giving the Wizard a Squash which is most common in the Forsaken Lands which explains the "lifeless soil" part.
Yeah, that's actually the only fruit that works. The mystery berry doesn't, but I did a bad job hinting at that being a joke.
You can also get a squash early at thieve's hideout.
When I read lifeless soil I thought of black cherries and spent 50 on it. But hey it gave me a cherry bomb to clear a boss fight
Really, the only problem I have with Frost Relay the lack of a “safety net” for the successive damage dealt.
Vi’s first two Beemarang moves have this “safety net” - broadly speaking, if the first hit does at least 1 damage to the targeted enemy, so will every successive hit. Damage reduction never goes below one… unless no damage was dealt in the first place. That same rule applies to “Power Bounce” from the early _Paper Mario_ games, for which “Frost Relay” is supposedly a counterpart.
If the formula for damage calculation can’t include that 1-damage “floor”, then “Frost Relay” becomes too situational for all but the smartest players.
Yeah, it's a really bad move if you don't raise the floor yourself.
I've tried the move a few times when I first got it, but thought it was way too weak, same thing happened with Frost Bowling to me. I realized myself that just buffing Vii und using Hurricane Toss is just better since it hits a lot, has a boost with the ADBP medal and ignores 1 armor. Later I also figured out that Ice rain is quite strong as well. But frost relay just fell off too fast most of the time.
Well berserker is found in the chomper caves, princess's birthplace. Her world-altering abilities can even mess with the fundamentals of math, it seems.
I always just ended up using this move because I thought it was fun lol
Respectable.
Me too!!!!! It really is a fun one!
Frozen Drill is pretty weird too.
The wiki says it does Leif and Kabbu’s combined attack halved rounded up each hit, but Empower and Poison Attacker seem to skip that and directly boost the final attack. However, using both Empower+ and 2 Poison Attackers has the same effect as only using one of those two choices!
I was doing 3 damage per hit without any buffs, 5 damage per hit with either giving both Leif and Kabbu empower buffs or using two Poison Attackers on Kabbu, but still only 5 damage per hit with both empower buffs and poison attacker!
The way Leif and Kabbu's attack works is combined attack, halved, round to even if it's not an integer.
Having a combined attack of 2 deals 1 damage per hit, 3 attack deals 2 damage per hit, but 5 attack also deals 2 per hit.
As someone who loves using all the team attacks for hype reasons and also spamming Frost Bowling purely for the hype of hitting entire crowds of jerks with the ULTIMATE TEAM MOVE, I'm glad I found this video to make Frost Relay actually good and be as strong as it feels like it should be.
I was wondering why a move that takes so much effort to get was doing much less single target damage then vi’s damage skills you naturally get in terms of damage per action spent. My setups always tended to include hard charge or perhaps favorite one so that’s probably it.
Hard charge is my best friend! But way more useful with hurricane and tornado toss. I was using it for relay too but I didn’t realize it only affected the first hit.
Lol, found this video after using Frost Relay on the last boss and it did zero damage, and it made me wonder what the heck was up with it. I always have Kabbu at the front as the tank unless I want Vi to do Hurricane after Leif freezes, so VI is in the last spot, guess that makes a difference? Not played any bosses on hard mode yet, so I've not tried any of the really broken power boosting builds yet.
I’m only 30 seconds in, so I don’t know your reasoning yet, but with the build I have, I usually get 20+ damage with this move. 2nd best I used hurricane toss which gets me about 20. It’s a little cheaper, but if what I’m fighting is weak to ice, I’m going relay. (These options are dependent on enemy defense and if I have break equipped too)
I’m on my 4th play through of this game and this time around, I’m basically shifting medals every 30 minutes to try a ton of combinations, both to optimize and to handicap for added challenge. All my upgrades went into medals so far (I got 3 levels left).
Thanks for the breakdown, I definitely didn’t realize how the points were broken down. I don’t see the damage per hit since I’m focused on the buttons being pressed. I only end up seeing the total damage at the end. I also didn’t realize the ice weakness wasn’t applied. That being said, is there still the 1 extra point of damage when Vi hits the frozen enemy like there would normally be(e)?
I thought Relay didn't have an ice element when Leif attacks. It's either way a great attack against 0 defense bosses
@@PhantomAarantulaSince I’m too busy looking at the button prompts, I don’t actually get to see what the damage per hit is, but because Leif does freeze the enemy in this attack (I think it might be every other hit), I assumed that it must do the +1 damage on the next hit like it normally would when an enemy is frozen. Then, because he does actually freeze the enemy, I assumed that any weaknesses to ice must still apply too, but it is only an assumption.
I also wonder if perhaps there could be a difference in how it works between PC and Switch. It’s not common that tiny tweaks like that would be made between platforms, especially if the games weren’t released at the same time, but it’s not unheard of either. The console versions came out about 6 months later, so maybe a few changes were made after feedback from a wider audience?
(My experience is on the Switch)
@@RavenFilms I'll be the one to say then that though Leif can freeze, the game doesn't calculate the damage as being ice when looking at doing extra damage for targeting a weakness.
Very good and informative, I actually learned a lot from this video! I rarely ever use Frost Relay and whenever I do I don't even know how much damage I'm doing since all I pay attention to during the attack are the button commands because of how fast it gets (I always do pay attention to how much damage I did in total though just by looking at the boss's HP before and after the attack but I have no idea how much damage each hit is doing because I'm only looking at the button commands the whole time) so most of this information is new to me even with how much I have played this game. I love these kinds of videos, they're my favourite of yours. Always very in-depth, informative, full of interesting and useful information, and you explain everything very well!
I've noticed lately that I've had a passion for educating people with what this game has in its code. So there likely will be more like this in the future. Guess that's something to look forward to!
Funny story, prior to the v1.1 patch, Frost Relay was actually one of the best moves it the game. Despite being 6 Hits, the Damage calculation was consistent (-1 damage each hit) so you could make mincemeat out of single target enemies. Nowadays, it’s 12 hits and trying to understand how the damage calculation works is about as easy as trying to fully understand Kingdom Hearts’s full canon. (Also Power Bounce could’ve easily been nerfed by breaking its calculation now that I think about it.)
Looks like I underestimated Frost Relay too much…
Not your fault that Frost Relay is wack.

I hate this squash, I've gone to the dead lands and had clawed my way through the enemies until I could reach a save point after collecting the stupid mystery berry to just come back here and see all I needed was a squash, with all due respect screw you, but i gotta admit that you got me
Yea, bad joke on my part. Tried to add a correction in the pinned comments for that reason.
@@PhantomAarantula Nah it's fine, I honestly deserved it, I was too much of a stickler to progress without completing some of the quests and kept on wasting too much time running around, so when I finnaly couldn't do it anymore and decided to find some asnwer for the quest, misssing out a small detail such as that squash in the last second of the transition is quite ironic :) 👍
I used this skill a whopping three times, had no idea why my damage was ass, and switched to Frozen Drill instead.
Frost Relay is really dumb for how little feedback it gives to the player.
The flukenest of this game
Hm…. Which medal should I use to use Frost Relay….
*Puts them all on*
👍
ALL of the medals
@@PhantomAarantula YES
yeah I’m still not using this move
However do nothing strats go brr
Do Nothing is broken for an entirely different reason.
Can confirm I beat Stratos and Delilah with the sheer power of doing nothing
Frost Relay is actually more powerful if you don't fail the twelfth input... if you have hacked in 9999 attack power, of course!
Frost Relay, the most confusing move in the game…
Would you believe me if I said I was considering titling the video as confusing at first?
@@PhantomAarantula probably
Thanks for using my comment in this video!
Yeet
Never a truer statement.
1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10!
I counted to 10! I get a gold star!
CZcams doesn't let me give stars, but I can give a heart.
You forgot 2.
Bug fables did to
what would be the most damging medal setup for the move (attempting the B.O.S.S.)?
I ended using all attack ups possible.
Last Stands
Poison Attackers
Power Exchange
Hard Charge
Empower x3
Lowering enemy def
This was my setup. And somehow I ended doing over 80 damage. Either I’m lucky or secretly skilled
I got the thing but never used it
Better than me on my first playthrough
0:57 isn’t the second clue-what you have as the Mystery Berry-referring to the Squash? I know it works, at least…
Unless the implication is that MB was originally intended as the solution before being extended to Squash as well?
Consider the "lifeless soil" hint with an area called the "Dead lands"... Or more closely examine that part of the video and see if anything changes.
Ah, I see it now. Missed that the first time. I know the Dead Lands bit makes sense, but I consider the Forsaken Lands as similarly rather “lifeless”, and I’d not heard of using MB’s for the quest to my memory, so I guess it just took me aback. The more you know I suppose.
@@PlayBugFables Yeah mystery berries don't actually work.
Huh. I just kinda assumed they were an alternative given their cooking properties. Honestly, wouldn’t be surprised if the solution used to be MB’s before they changed it to squashes, to make Frost Relay more accessible.
@@PlayBugFables Can only speculate. But if it's supposed to make the move more accessible, I don't think it succeeded since at least speaking personally, I didn't even find Frost Relay before beating the game when I played it blind.
i don't know why i didn't understood, but can you tell what the best stats and medals for everyone are in reply?
I don't think I can explain it any better than I did in the video. If you didn't understand me there, perhaps you'll just have to experiment for yourself.
@@PhantomAarantula ok. i know i have one build that can 1-2 turn KO Spuder EX
So what's the matter with Antlion Jaw + Relay? Does it not pierce defense at all?
No, Antlion Jaws does absolutely nothing with this move.
@@PhantomAarantula Antlion Jaws is awful for every skill.
What are the music you used pretty please :D
Updated the description.
@@PhantomAarantula Thanks so much !
sorry, but what the hell just happened?
Frost Relay happened.
