Probably hands down one of the best builds Nikon has ever put out. My D4 is high mileage also and continues to earn its keep. Although it lacks some of the bells and whistles the D5 and D6 offer, it still holds its own. Lousy light? Completely dark? Harsh sun? Pouring rain? This camera takes it all in stride. I have shot it at cringeworthy ISO’s, and still have very usable results. Add an external flash, and the results are dazzling. I have newer bodies, but the D4 will always have a place in my bag. Thanks for making such great videos. All the best! 😎

  • @lamarbur
    @lamarbur Před 3 lety +12

This is the best review of this camera aside from Theoria Apophasis. I purchased my Nikon D3 brand new like you did for the D4. I added the D3s and beat the crap out of them. I still use them. I added the D4s and then the D4 to my arsenal. I did so because I am a documentary photographer for low and available light situations. As a matter if practice, I often cannot nor use flash unless I am absolutely in near total darkness. I destroyed my D4 and D4s this summer while covering the MLK March on Washington DC when I got into the reflecting pool and did not realize until it was too late that my straps were too long, submerging them, in just a matter of seconds. Nikon was able to to repair my lenses but the cost to repair the bodies was prohibitive. So, I replaced them on Ebay. I have abused all of my Nikon cameras and agree with everything you said. They get heavy after about three hours but they never let me down. I am also not a spray and pray shooter. Great images.

Hi there. Thank you for this great video about a great camera! My first „big“ Nikon was the D3s, which I bought new in 2011. My second body was a D700 - I really loved them both, but the D3s a little more.
In 2019 I found a good offer for a D4 with only about 800 shots fired. She‘s so great. A little later, I bought a Df as my second body on weddings and other events for the reason the sensor is the same as in the D4. The Df is really beautiful I think, but once shot with the Nikon „bricks“ … there is something I can‘t explain, I just love it.
So since then I thought about buying a D850 or a D5 and sell the Df.
Two weeks ago I finally sold the Df for a good price, planning to have an eye on the market. One day later I found a D4s with about 280 shots. New. No marks. Nothing. That was a no brainer for me. The D4 is epic, the D4s also. No D5/D850 needed. Period.
Your video manifested my decision. Thanks again for that! Stay healthy and have a great day!

I just got a heavily used D4 today. My first FX camera. Already have a 50 1.8 and a 80-200 2.8 that I'm using with my D7100. Loving the way it feels in my hands, loving the 10 fps when I need it. Always love the Nikon ergonomics and the menu system. It has plenty of scars and dings and a pretty high SC (390K), but it's at a price point I can afford, plus I'm a hobbyist with some small ad-hod paid shoots sometimes. Can't wait to shoot with it when Covid-19 dies down.

Jeremy depends on what you’re shooting. If it’s fast moving sports and you really need the battery life and reliability, then the D4 is the way to go. Same for the D3s, D4s and D5. For more...general purpose all-round shooting, D750 is the way to go. Also has good video if you need it. Best part is the 2 SD slots, so you only need one card reader.
Personally, D4. Small file sizes, good performance in low light, battery lasts for a long time.

Great images at the end of the video, really glad you included some of your work! Cameras can't see moments of emotion or frame artistic compositions but they CAN allow the person behind the viewfinder concentrate more on the art and less on technical stuff/settings. For me mirrorless and things like Eye AF and a live preview have made the process so much easier than using dslr's or film. I too have great images taken with 4 and 6 megapixel cameras from over 20 years ago but new technology just makes the acquisition so much easier. A lot depends on what you shoot too, if you want to capture a kingfisher in flight diving for it's meal the camera makes all the difference in the world, however if you want to photograph a sunset over the lake a simpler even slower camera can be just as capable. About 3 years ago I purchased a Sony A7Riii just to "see" what the hype was about. I was willing to return it and pay the restocking fee and return if it didn't work out. Within hours I was loving the new camera and in the weeks that followed sold all my Canon bodies, lenses and accessories I had acquired of the past 20 years. Zero regrets and I love shooting with my Sony cameras. I never did wildlife or fast action photography but now I do because my cameras don't frustrate me. Recently purchased the A1, expensive but with the ability to use electronic shutter for almost everything I'm hoping it'll have a long run like the D4 you're holding. Shooting musicians on stage it's not uncommon to come home with over 700 images per show. Multiply that times 3 shows a week in addition to other photography and a mechanical shutter count for a week of usage can easily be 3,000. Multiply that by a year and it's up to 150,000. I don't think of it as "spray and pray", not at all... shooting bursts at high frame rates when there's something you see rather than trying to time the perfect single frame allows selecting the exact moment later in post. Over 20 years ago when digital emerged my cousin and I (also a professional photographer that owned a processing lab) said we're going to see a day when prints are simply made from still frames plucked from video that captures the entire event. We're at the point now where that isn't far from the truth. On the other side of the coin I still know a photographer that shoots black and white film on his medium format cameras for weddings and creates outstanding images. He too shoots Nikon DSLR's and hasn't yet dove into mirrorless although I think he may do so soon.

I have bought mine used from a wedding photographer in 2016 with 56 000 shutter count. With it all his JPeg settings. I now runs as 162 000 shutter count, I do nature and wildlife and school sport. it lives on my Nikon 300 f2.8 vr1 and it spits out clean and sharp files with every trip. It is a great feeling not the have GAS, as you know very little out there will do a better job. Recently bought a D4s with 8200 shutter count for $1200 spotless. The immediate reaction from many others with GAS asked me why not a D850? or D5 or Z7? Simple answer, you don't know what I know.

Stumbled across this older video. I have always looked upon the D4 as THE Rock & Roll, mean metal mother of a DSLR. They still command a high price in good condition used here in the UK. I see them go for £1000 £1200 (US$15/1700 I guess) from used retail dealers. I expect cheaper from a private individual.

FANTASTIC review! Spot on with so many of your comments. I have a D3, but upgraded to a D4 a little less than a year ago. I bought used with I think around 50k? (at 88k now - a lot of that was shooting sports, so did used the rapid fire a bit). I think Nikon estimates shutter life at 400k? Agree with hating that 2nd card slot - not even a decent one, could have lived with SD, but XQD or some such thing? They really missed the boat on that one. And 16 Mp - more than enough. Canon colors comment was right on point as well. 3200 ISO - pretty accurate, although I've gotten a few at 6400 that were ok. Better if you clean them up in post though. Some really, and I mean REALLY great shots. You are a true talent sir. TY

Not many cameras I can be totally confident in delivering day in and day out without any hick ups the D4 from the images to the battery to the build quality. its an amazing camera. I know photographers that have over 1 million clicks and still going strong. Enjoy the D4 and never sell it. :)

    Hey brother,
I see that your video was posted a year ago, so please pardon my late arrival to the party.
Thank you for your outstanding video and review...I can't help but feel that you and I are very similar creatures, based both on your photography (your captures are exquisite) and the way you speak.
That said, I shoot Nikon, and have done so throughout my little "photography life"...first film with F3's & F4's, then the move to digital brought to a D5000, a D7000, and now 2 D4's, which are pretty much my "go-to" cameras. (I also have a Mamiya 645AFD medium-format with film and digis' backs, but I suppose that's a story another day)
I'd say I pretty much agree with all that you've started about the D4, and Nikon in general. I don't feel that I've ever really been "anything short of happy" with my D4's and the results and images they produce.
My photography journey and story is.long, but interesting and rooted in true emotion,.. As a fellow photographer, I feel that you'd appreciate it, and I'd love to share it with you sometime.
I'm very pleased that I found your video and channel, and will definitely subscribe to it. Thanks again for your solid opinions and insight in this video,. It's nice to know there are others out there who are passionate about this art form, and smart and savvy enough to articulate their experience so well.

I´m a professional and my D4 still is my number one reportage or docuentary camera. I see no reason to get a D5 or D6. I also own a Z6 and a D3 and when i film concerts, i often use my D4 for a total view, whereas i take my Z6 for detail-videos to cut in and together with my old horse D3 for photography. Still D3 is great in 2021. Last year the shutter of my D4 broke after approx 460k photos but i decided to renew it and the rubber for just € 600,- and am able to use it another couple of years. I wouldn´t do it, when the shutter of the D3 will break, but it has much less shutter counts as i bought my D4 just 3 years after the D3. Now, i was curios of my battery-age, as i recognized that it´s imprinted in your video. Mine are from 06-2012 and 05-2012 and also in perfect condition. I love my Nikon lineup and may i will expand it by a Z7 II or a D850. Thank you for your video and must say, that you do great photography as well. Best greetings from Vienna/ Austria

@@michaelgerhold5659 I would go for the D4 and here is why, a few hundred dollars more. Better low light, more pixels. fast AF, bigger LCD and the D4 does video. The D3 does not have video capabilities. The D4 can record video HD at 1080P. Better processor. The D3 was Nikon's first FX Pro DSLR body camera. The D3s. D3X then the D4. So yah D4 ALL THE WAY.. Im living proof that the D4 is amazing. hehe good luck Michael.

Hi Vahagn. I absolutely love the work and thank you for including it. Stumbled upon your channel a while back but absolutely needed to watch this video. Could really use your opinion but r any suggestions you may have. I’ve been really interested in getting a used full frame body instead of an APS-C body. The Sony A7 and A7 II have awesome image quality but that old menu system is a real turn off for me and the A7 III is out of my budget. Nikon Mirrorless would be nice too but also out of my budget. Which Nikon FX pro DSLR and possibly used Nikon mirrorless bodies are good options for a first camera and have fantastic low-light capability and present good value for money? I’m new at photography but would like something solid to build my portfolio and that i can grow with. I was considering the D4/D4S but have my heart set on the D810. Any suggestions? Ive got an interest in real estate/architectural, street, night and landscape photography along with some portraiture and astrophotography. Ill be trying my hand at pretty much in-between to see what i tend to like shooting.

Didn't make any money at all with my D50. Oh well.
Great photos, but sucked that it had no video capability.
That really hurt me, I missed out on making any content for CZcams.
It conditioned my brain wrong; if I want to show someone something, I frame a shot and take a picture of it; I never make a video.
So, mixed feelings about my Nikon. One trick pony that did what it did good, but didn't anticipate my future needs with features I didn't know I needed yet. In the end, it got supplanted by a $35 budget smart phone with meh quality, just for the absolute conveinience because the phone could upload or post images immediately to the internet from anywhere via wifi or cellular network.
