Thanks for unearthing this beast. A super informative video as always, Landon!
Grand! I bought the Korg CR 4 in 2005 and used the device inflationarily. Together with a Boss DR-670, guitar, bass and vocals, it has allowed me to create incredibly creative worlds. I miss the tool. And when I saw your demo, I felt like I was transported back to my old childhood room.
I don't use recording equipment but I am still entertained and learned something.
Hi Landon, I hope you are well dear friend. Yet again another great informative video. You truly are a fount of wisdom and keeping the analogue vibe alive for us old guys, God bless. Kind regards. Paul.
Just discovered your channel. You should have more subscribers and probably will eventually. You’re covering topics that really not many people are. I’d love to see you do a video talking about the whole category of self contained digital studios, like the Korg D12. It would be interesting to see a video about the rise and decline of that particular category of device. They were clunky to use but I used to use my korg all the time back in the day.
I covered the Boss BR-1180, but didn’t discuss the technology so much as I highlighted it’s workflow. That subject is a good suggestion. Thanks for watching!
I didn’t even know goodwill had a website
Cool video! I remember when that thing came out. My verdict without ever owning it: the fact you could get tape sound and had to learn to play a part for the length of a full song and commit to the effects made it way cool. It sounded awesome too. I probably would have skipped the whole amp sim thing myself.
great video! i got mine in 2006 and used for a good 7 years and made loads of albums on it, i used the efx a lot on vocals ! the missing varispeed is the real downer though
Very very good
Yup........I own one ....bought it for about $100 new maybe about 2004. Actually I see
your sumation at the end to be a pretty good overview of it and what it is good for.
BTW the built in speakers sound amazingly good for onboard monitors and playback
I fucking love your videos
I also have it!!! I have made lots of my albums with it! until today!!!
Hey there, thanks for the video! I found it while looking for modern devices that might replace a Korg CR-4 as a bedroom recording/music sketchpad device and was wondering - as someone who knows a lot more about recording equipment than I do, are there any modern devices that replicate what the Korg CR-4 aims to do? Anything that may also have a built in keyboard? Appreciate any advice you can offer!
Devices with a built in keyboard are gonna be a portable workstation synth like the OP-1. There’s not a ton on the market today in terms of hardware multi-track recorders, but Tascam and Zoom both make some solid state ones that record to SD card. There’s the Boss BR series that’s also solid state, but may be antiquated in terms of modern computer connectivity. Hope that helps!
@@magicspiral3323 Thanks for the response! That OP-1 looks cool as hell, time to start saving. Those Zoon and Tascam recorders look great as well, and more viable in the short term. Appreciate the advice.
Yo those things are the coolest looking things
Hi great info. Except couldn't you offer simple examples of how to record with it? Instead of a critique on it's limitations? In other words show how to record tracks like vocals, guitar, drum machine for instance.Just a friendly suggestion. I'm wondering if this will work for me as I like To keep things simple really. Thanks again,Jim
I recorded an album with one of these: Skill, Stamina and Luck by Dub Chieftain.
Roasted! Haha. Cool unit for sure. Reggae!
Honestly I just want to make some weird ambient acoustic synth whatever, like uh... Campfire Headphase kinda sound but nowhere near as complex. Would this be good for that? :v
Sure it would be, I hope the video gives an idea of the workflow inherent with the limitations!
@magicspiral3323 ok, cool!
And I'm going on the assumption that you can record one track, rewind it, and then let it play while recording the next track? That's probably obvious to most people but uh... I've been burned on recording equipment that *doesn't* do that... (Glaring at my Akai tape deck.)
Nice review Landon... where's the cat???
I guess she didn’t like this machine 🙀
nice review, could you comment on how the speakers sound? thanks
Thanks! You know, they sound alright. I was pleased with them for what they are. They don’t sound amazingly articulate or anything, but they get the job done without being harsh and tinny.
When I think of tape distortion for rock music, I think of low-fi reinvented for the current generation and beyond.
What does "DO NOT STREAM IT ON SPOTIFY" mean?
I’m just being ironic.
@@magicspiral3323 How come?
Worst 4 track i ever used imo 👍
