Moa means “center” in Samoan and “Sa” means sacred. Yes it also means chicken but but it’s not in the western context as some may try to use “chicken” in mockery. Pls everyone I am a Samoan who is also Tongan on one side of my grandmothers family and Melanesian Fijian on one side of my grandfather’s ancestors. Let us think critically, objectively even through our objective histories for this intellectual conversations. We are more connected than we think. Malo ‘aupito, Vinaka vakalevu, mahalo nui and malo fa’afetai. ‘Ia manuia.

Thank you Dr. Opeti Taliai, this history should show to all us Tongans and Samoas that we are connected no matter how much we try to separate ourselves from another. I myself considered as Samoan but I can’t disregard my Tongan ancestry so as Tongans who has similar status. Understanding our history enables us to understand that we are the one of the same and we should embrace our unity. Samoa, Tonga and Fiji in my opinion are the heartland and birthplace of the Polynesian race.

I enjoyed what he had to say, a refreshing narrative which brings to light PRE colonialism...Surely Tongans were a people before Christianity, right! In particular, his work on Tongan history not only originating from the royals, but in fact how oral history supports Tongan lineage stretching further back before Tupou I. I for one am very much interested to see what his research has to say and add to Tongan history.

Perhaps the Tupou family is from the Tupua aiga and line i Samoa. There is a suafa Folasá title and Tui Tongamatoe in the village of Falelima in Savai'i. Perhaps these are the old families that could all relate to Tui Manu'a. If the Tui Manu'a line has been preserved in the Tongan royal line perhaps this same line in Samoa is Tupua Fuiavailiili lineage. Ia manuia Samoa Atoa 🙏

I believe that Opeti Taliai have taken the comment made by the late Queen Salote out of context, and probably misunderstood it because the depiction of Queen Salote here was an assessment through palangi lens, notably Elizabeth Bott who published her book in 1999. You would have to be Tongan and know Tongan history to translate these quotes said to have been made by the Queen what she meant and not a literal translation taken out of context. " Tongan history is what the Highest Chief (Herself) say " The palangi recording Queen Salote couldn't have gotten tongan history from anyone higher in Tonga. The palangi was in the presence of the Highest chief of Tonga. Queen Salote's geneology is the history of Tonga, the final chapter evolving from Tuitonga Empire to the present day Monarchy Kingdom. But what exactly did Queen Salote say that was contradiction/contrary to Tongan history that was clearly before Queen Salote's ascension to the throne. Tongan history that was known and even til today long before King Taufaahau Tupou I united the islands of Tonga? Dr. Opeti Taliai brings up Queen Salote giving her geneology beginning with Tuitonga Uluakimata implying that Queen Salote was cutting off the former Tuitonga because they were Samoan.
Niel Gunson wrote about Tuitonga Takalaua marrying a female Tuimanu'a and that successive Tuitonga(s) lived in Samoa holding the TuiManua title but with Tuitonga title taking precedence. Morgan Tuimaleali'ifano (professor of history at USP) in his book cites the name of the female Tuimanu'a as Vaelavemata, indicating there's indigenous knowledge of it to be true, maybe only known among elite tulafale(s) and others being secretive about it like knowledge of Pulemelei. But it is also known in tongan oral history that Tuitonga Takalaua (1375AD) was assassinated avenged by his son Tuitonga Kauulufonua Fekai (1400AD). Tuitonga deputized installed his brother MotuaTonga as TuiHaatakalaua to rule in Tonga. It is known that Tuitonga Kauulufonua (1400AD) to Tuitonga Tapuosi (1500AD) Uluakimata's father, the Tuitonga was living in Samoa having samoan wives and were back and forth especially for the inasi and polopolo ceremony. Tuitonga departure(1500AD) back to Tonga was Tuitonga Tapuosi which coincided with the shift of power from Manu'a to the western Samoan islands in the creation of the Tafa'ifa title in the person of Queen Salamasina, Tuitonga Tapuosi's maternal niece. And it is known in our tongan talatupu'a or kamata anga o Tonga, that Ahoeitu was the first Tuitonga installed by Tangaloa Eitumatupu'a, you cannot cut off the former Tuitonga lineage, its how you read these palagi writings. Did Maui literally fish up islands? Was it a literal magical fishing hook?. Did Tangaloa Tufunga literally throw down chips of wood. Did Ahoeitu literally climb a beanstalk to Langi to meet his father in Heaven?
When you're knowledgeable of Tongan history you won't take quotes recorded interpreted translated in english out of context. Dr. Taliai only offers the geneology that Queen Salote gave beginning with Tuitonga Uluakimata as if to say its her personal biographical history she's passionate about. Dr. Taliai should know that the Tuitonga Empire did not begin in the 1500s with Uluakimata, that was actually the decline of Tuitonga secular authority, So Elizabeth wood Ellem / Elizabeth Bott is not to be given weight as if it was God inspired truth

Malietoa Tanu II said that in Samoa, everyone is King. This is true largely to the extent that chiefly titles in Samoa derive their power to rule from the consent of families that owns that title. Everyone in Samoa has a faasigomaga and a claim to their village/district chiefly title. In Tonga, you have a supreme title that rules over you despite you having no familial connection or claim to the title. In Samoa, we don't do that. We refuse to have a King and we never did. When Malietoa or Mataafa was elevated to King, this was only done in the fashion of Europeans and so Samoans never accepted it. When Tonga boasts about being the only "remaining" monarchy in the South Pacific but then we see their "monarch"'s tradition echo European monarchs moreso than the Pacific way, I think we know who ultimately were more colonized in their hearts.
Samoa's cultural traditions are very rich and remain to this day. We can't say the same thing about the Samoan royal descendants in Nukualofa who wear thick wool in the middle of a tropical warm island weather. Samoa was colonized because big nations with big guns and more people saw value in it. As we both know, Samoa and Tonga didn't have any gunpowder and our populations are relatively low compared to foreign nations. There's nothing special about Tonga that would have prevent it from being colonized, except that your King submitted Tonga to the foreign nations, without any consultation or opposition from other royal house in Tonga. Why need conquer Tonga when the hearts and mind of your rulers were already conquered? See, this is the difference between us. In Samoa, Malietoa tried to take advantage of the British to win his little war with Mataafa and Lilomaiava. Meanwhile, Mataafa tried using the Germans to his advantage against Malietoa. Samoa is a country made up of many alii. We have diverse ideas about how Samoa should have been governed and that lead to different alliances and wars internally to solve that question. In other words, it built the foundational character of Samoa in the colonial period which we see now in the post-colonial information age. Samoa today, is arguably more developed and well structured than Tonga. We saw in 2006 how frail Tonga's European-style monarchy is.

King George Taufa’ahau Tupou 1 “accepted” christianity because of the back up and the weapons it came with it and basically declared himself as the “king” of Tonga. Though we weren’t technically “colonised” we were most definitely concurred.

The reason why HMQ Salote Tupou 3rd wrote and began much of Tonga’s History with the Tu’iTonga Uluakimata 1 the 28th of the Kings of Tu’iTonga was this is when Tu’iTonga’s not only stopped traveling back and forth to Samoa but also cut ties by no more marriages of alliances with Samoa due to a split of the dynasty creating the Tu’ihatakalaua dynasty. This is when Tonga national patriotic party began and broke off from Samoa. So the alliance between Tonga and Samoa became weakened..but Tonga turned and allied with Fiji at this time creating trade routes and marriages with Fiji’s paramount Chiefs around the early 1300C.E. which when the Tu’ihatakalaua dynasty began its golden age while Tu’iTonga line became weaker in political power only remained as a paramount Royal house.

These historians never never never ask for the family any history, thus, most of his theories are foreign to the family !!! aia koe ngaahi lau ia ko eni oku fu'u alu kehe atu .. ikai ofi kihe me'a oku ilo he famili... this is far too left!!

Interesting. I know that some Samoans reached the Big Island of Hawaii and became the ancestors of the Kamehamehas and other Hawaiian royals, but I never heard that Oahu was part of Samoa ‘Atoa. What evidence does he have for that? Also, I always knew I had Tongan blood in me because of our relationship with Tonga for more than a thousand years. So I wasn’t surprised when my sisters and a cousin did their dna test and found out they had Tongan ancestry. However, the big surprise was when I studied my genealogy, I found out there is a Tupou in my family history.

Faaaloalo & Alofa to my Aiga Samoa
Verify what this guy is saying with your own indigenous stories....Because this here is nothing he grew up hearing from our elders and neither did Dr. Okusitino Mahina....these academics have taken into account collected stories from early Europeans and created their own theory and is now thrown around as if it's factual...
Dr. Opeti Taliai is mistaken: Tagaloa is not the TuiManu'a family name it is Moa and Tongans have always referred to Samoans as HaaMoa ...people/clan/family/tribes/descendants of Moa never HaaTangaloa
There's a Samoan story that Lu fled Tagaloa in Lagi down to earth where he found islands he named Samoa honoring his maternal uncle Moa....If Lu fled Lagi and found Samoa than Samoa is not Lagi realm of Tagaloa and Dr. Opeti's presentation is misinformation...incorrect...
Samoan Dr. Albert Refiti says that SaTagaloa were men sacred to Tagaloa who were tufugaga that they and Tagaloa Lagi were not Samoan but foreigners to Samoa.....There's a story that SaTagaloa built a Faleula for TuiManua and Tagaloa came to Samoa because and destroyed it and scattered the men....
Something in Tongan traditions are Sia/Mounds associated with Tangaloa that was inherited by Ahoeitu from his father Tangaloa EituMatupu'a the last of the ruling Tangaloa .....there are no mounds in Manu'a ....the carbon dates of Tau Manu'a doesn't predate Tongatapu ....none from eastern Samoa has predated the western samoa.....
If TuiManua predated TuiTonga why did the site in Faga, Fitiuta on Tau home island of TuiManua dated to have been inhabited as early as 1000AD? that's the peak of TuiTonga.....
Dr. Opeti Taliai nor Dr. Okusitino Mahina can produce no Tongan oral tradition that even hints an idea that Samoa or Manu'a is Lagi realm of Tangaloa.....There's no mention of a TuiManu'a ruling all of Tonga ...maybe all of Tau ....

That's interesting. New evidence in archeological finds, show that Tonga (nukuleka) was the first island in all of Polynesia to be inhabited by the Fijians from Pulotu 3000 years ago. That matches the oral history in Tonga that our first ancestors came from Pulotu (Fiji) where Havea Hilule'o the who was the oldest of Tangaloa and Maui motu'a dwelt. As the oldest female, she is where the fahu system is said to have derived from. This goes back before Tonga and Samoa were even discovered. The Fijians were the first to land in Tonga, and it is their royal bloodlines who are the only ones Eiki (ranked) over the Tongan Royal family. Wonder why Manua is not mentioned at all in that. • @teti_99
      @teti_99 Před rokem +2

@jayyoung5961 you nailed it toko. 💯 Kohai Koau Ko Momo we're WAY before Aho'eitu and from what I've heard, Samoa was named what is named by Tangaloa Eiki which is why it's called Ha'amoa in Tongan. Ha'a meaning the clan. Tangaloa Eiki from what I heard was given Tonga Mama'o (The far South) or Tonga Tapu (The sacred South) by as you mentioned, Hikule'o our highest deity while her dwelling place was pulotu. It was the Tangaloa Eiki's male predecessors (also named Tangaloa) who settled Manuka. Samoa was the epicenter for trading routs and and exchanging of goods and resources between the Polynesian islands. The perfect location for those traveling over seas. Manuka just happened to be growing in power at the time due to the reputation of the name Tangaloa. So as the village of Manuka was held in high regard to the Tongans, it was because it was settled by the Tangaloa line who were Tongan in origin but had intermarried with Samoan women of noble status, therefore the name Tangaloa became more Samoan by blood over time. Keep in mind this was almost 1,000 years after Tonga was found. The name was still defied in all of Polynesia and because it was carried down through the generations in Samoa, it was thought that Samoa was Tangalo Eiki's place of origin. But it is Tangaloa Eitumatupu'a (a far descendant of Tangaloa Eiki, the original) who comes from Manuka. It was much later that the chief Tangaloa from Manuka had wedded a woman of noble blood from Tonga (possibly Niua) name ilaheva va'epopua, and that was Aho'eitu. Approximately 900 years after Tangaloa Eiki was given Tonga Mama'o as his dwelling place by his big sister Hikule'o. Maui motu'a was the youngest of the three siblings and had nothing to his name which is why he and his lineage were know to be rebellious, mischievous and cunning. Because everything he did, he did for the people. Not the thrown. But I'm no historian by any means. Just did a lot of extensive research and had discussions with very prominent people who do this for a living in our community.

The talatupu'a of Tonga does begin with the origin of Tangaloa and we haven't heard any literal translation of Tangaloa to mean fisher god. There's no tongan oral traditions that mentions a Samoa Atoa or TuiManua having dominion over Tonga. There's nothing tongan that speaks of a sacrifice of seafood offerings given to TuiManua in what they called umiti. TuiManua family name is Moa not Tagaloa. Tongans have always referred to Samoans as Ha'aMoa not Ha'aTangaloa. Ha'amoa translate as people/family/clan/descendants of Moa. Samoan historian Dr. Albert Refiti says Tagaloa and SaTagaloa are not Samoans but foreigners to Samoa. Dr. Albert Refiti also says Tagaloa clan arrived in Samoa bringing the Faleula to Manu'a around a thousand years ago thats 1020AD consistent with the carbon date of the site in Faga Ta'u Manu'a Island @1000AD. It would also be consistent with the 36 TuiManua list recorded by Authur Young who happened to be father of the TuiManua Makerita, no dates out of the eastern part of Samoa archipelago Ofu, Olosega, Ta'u seem to not predate the western Samoan dates. Dr. Albert Refiti also state that SaTagaloa secretly built a Faleula for TuiManua and that Tagaloa Lagi came to Samoa and destroyed the Faleula and scattered the men. Why would Tagaloa Lagi destroy the Faleula? was TuiManua unworthy of the sacred Faleula?
Academics such as Dr. Mahina have been saying that Samoa is Langi so as to say that Samoa is home of Tangaloa. Samoan traditions has it that Lu fled Tagaloa down to earth finding islands he named Samoa honoring his uncle Moa, that means Samoa is not Langi home of Tangaloa of which Lu fled. Tongan tradition has it that Ahoeitu in search for his father Tangaloa Eitumatupu'a who presided in Langi, he did not have to leave Tongatapu but that he climbed a Toa tree.. Langi being rooted in Tongatapu.
For academics such as Dr Taliai to make such claims that TuiManua predates Tuitonga, please show your work explain how you've reached that conclusion, of course using oral traditions/history, but please within the parameters of common sense 😂😂😂😂
