Being in the right place at the right time sometimes works out. That's what happened to one bird watcher who found a man unexpectedly in need of life-saving care.
It can really be a lot of fun. I'm a former long-time volunteer naturalist. My "thang" was really wildflowers and natural remedies, but my home park has a waterfowl refuge, so I'm quite good with dabblers, divers, geese, and wading birds. We also have some mowed fields and pretty thick woods, so there's quite a variety of other birds, and cedar waxwings are my favorite of the songbirds. Aren't they beautiful?
I bet that fishing pole is what landed him in the river in the first place. He likely went after it and once he caught it, it wouldn't feel right to have gone through all that trouble and still not come back with it.
In 1998 i called in sick to work and me and 2 friends headed to Bear Lake in Northern Utah. On the way back a girl with a bloody nose was trying to flag cars down for help. We stopped to see what happened. The lady, her friend and her friends 1 year old baby was about 5 miles on a back road, hit a patch of snow and slid their car 150 feet down a hill and landed upside down. The baby was in great shap and laughing at being upside down, so we cut the car seat out and got the baby out. The mother was knocked out from hitting the windshield while still in her seat belt. We didnt move her. I left my 2 friends with them and flew 15 miles down the mountain to find a phone. They life flighted the unconscious lady to the hospital. Never got to find out how they were doing after words. It seemed everyone would be ok. We may never know why we are chosen to be in a certain place at a certain time.
Sometimes... Was following behind a lady on the highway, both of us doing about 70 (the posted speed) when her rear tire suddenly came apart throwing debris everywhere. She bobbled a bit but managed to regain control and slow down. Cars continue to whip past us but, on that day, being in the right place at the right time helped her out. I do roadside assistance so I've got emergency strobes and I flipped them on and helped her limp four lanes over to the right shoulder with cars blasting around us, horns blaring, but neither of us were hit. Once we were stopped I got out and found her having a severe panic attack - understandably. She wouldn't roll down her window but I did convince her to pop the trunk so I was able to get he tire changed. I sat behind her for another fifteen minutes until she gathered herself and started moving again, getting off at the exit we had stopped before. Keeping my lights on I followed her to a gas station where she could finally park safely. Still horribly shaken she thanked me profusely for helping, terrified that she was going to get hit trying to get off the road. In her panic she thought I had hit her and that was what caused her to lose control, and thought I was angry when I came to her window. She didn't even realize her tire blew and was surprised to see the spare on her car at the gas station! I just chuckled at that, told her to take some time to get her nerves under control, and went on with my day.
Weird, just this past weekend, we had plans fall through so we decided to head home early, we got home a day early and shortly after coming home, I heard a wailing so loud, it was affecting me, I was getting more upset as the deep gutteral wailing continued, it was a good hour before I called the police and then got impatient and decided to see where the wailing was coming from. It was an elderly woman in deep distress, she had lost her mom and was extremely upset and was wailing! I approached cautiously and said Ma'am are you okay and then I just went up to her and hugged her and held her and she cried a lot. Blessings to you Diana!
Thank you for being so kind to a stranger. I've heard a wail like that before and it's awful. While waiting for my daughter's schoolbus one afternoon, I saw a police officer leaving a neighbor's home. After he left, the woman sat down outside her door and began wailing. I could only assume he had notified her of a family member's death. That wail was the saddest thing I've ever heard.
Praise GOD! Right place, right time!! Thank you for your quick thinking and knowing how to keep him hanging on!! His grandson wouldn't have cared about that fishing pole! His grandpa is way more important to him! You can replace a pole, but not your grandpa!! Thank you for being there!!
You know Mark Lowry said it best. You can't just go home early, your room's not ready!! That man held on tight because he knew his room wasn't ready!! And thank you, to all who told such wonderful stories they were involved in!!
God could have given the fisherman better balance,or diverted the flow a while so he could walk out, of let him catch a fish earlier so he would have left the river, or ... or... we could admit that an observant man taking his daily stroll on that path was exactly what it is without the hocus pokus.
He was led there tosa e this man. What a wonderful blessing to the man who was rescued. Cedar Waxwing is one of my favorite birds. I once rescued some fledgling ones.
I was riding my bike along a drainage canal in Vegas a few years ago when I was chasing a flash flood in it,when I got ahead of it to watch it plunge away, I saw a young man who was inside and lowered and couldn't see anything coming. I started screaming at him "YOU BETTER GET THE FUCK OUT OF THERE!!!!,and other invectives that got his attention. He pulled himself out just as the wall of water hit his feet. My name is Bicycle Bob and I approved this message and I'm still freaked out by the fact that 30 seconds either way and he would have died.
Back in the early 1980's, I was going to my brother's new house (about 50 miles from my home), in a rural area, with my friend and her 3 year old daughter. I had put a quilt (my deceased sister in law had made) and pillow in the back seat, in case the baby got tired. I took a wrong turn (all dirt roads), and coming around a curve, there were two young women in the middle of the road, covered in blood. One was sitting up, with the other one's head in her lap. We didn't have cell phones back then, so we wrapped the unconscious one in the quilt and put the pillow under her legs to elevate them. My friend stayed with them, while I drove to the first house I could find to call for help. The state police came out, and apparently, the girl's were sister's, the oldest one had been driving, ran off the road, and dragged her sister from the car to the road. The police found the vehicle, which we hadn't noticed, because it was in a wooded area. I asked the police, when we were told to leave, if I could be called later, so I could pick up the quilt, since the EMT's weren't there yet, and I didn't want them to take it off the girl, who was conscious by then. Never found out what happened to the girl's (guessing they survived, or it would have been on the news), but the next morning, I found the quilt on my front porch. You just never know when a seemingly insignificant action can turn into something much more important. This man proves there are still good people out there willing to help. Kudo's to him!
You have to watch local news because good news doesn’t produce the high ratings on cable news or social media like playing to people’s negative emotions does. Scaring, angering, and driving people to hate is more addictive and lucrative. Watching videos like these change your “algorithm” to a happier one. 🥹
Sometimes we have to be reminded that Nature is much bigger, and stronger, than us. Keep your eyes open and your wits about you at all times. So glad you were there to help save this man.
Our hero says he walks there every evening, and is in the habit of scanning the landscape pretty intensely, so being "chosen" is a bit of a stretch. A stroke of good or bad fortune is not caused by the supernatural, as comforting an emotional crutch as that may be to think so.
Glad his grandson's still got his Granddaddy. Props to Rolph.
What a lovely chap, thank goodness he loves his birdwatching.

✨️🩵🙏 Very cool. Angels are everywhere.
(And nothing to do with religion, fwiw.)
Thank you for being that person!🤝
Wow great story! Thank god for you and your friends 🫶🏼
It’s the calling in sick and going to the lake for me, lol but thanks for being a hero!

Good man. Don't underestimate the power of a reassuring voice.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful story! I will watch heartwarming instead of horrifying every time!

Real life heroes can be anywhere!
What a story! He was supported to be there and he was! ❤
God used this man
What a wonderful story. Amazing God sent the bird watcher to help.
Just stop it

I think cedar waxwings are understated and elegant. Love watching them. Glad they saved a life...
Nice story with a happy ending. If you spend enough time in the outdoors you will likely stumble into situations like this. He handled it well.
Our local news had a close up of the man and the log and it looked like a work of art.

Excellent! You undoubtedly saved his life. Sometimes it only takes a shout.
What a great guy! I hope someone like him is around if I ever need help! And I hope I can help like he did if I ran into a similar situation!
Right place right time, well done to the bloke for saving him.
"Have you ever thought Wow?"......
Yes. When I saw this beautiful lady on my screen.

I'm glad you got the quilt back. 🤝
I have a feeling your sister-in-law somehow played a hand in that rescue. Just my opinion.
So wondeful to see humans being kind and helping each other
Never underestimate the power of water! Well done birdwatcher! ❤️ from me in South Africa, also a birdwatcher 😀 🇿🇦
What a hero! Saved the man, and his fishing pole, and got the bird photo! Yay!!! Wonderful fellow and story. Thank god!
That’s a good man. Thank you helping him 🫶🏼
Bird watchers are the best most empathetic souls
Such a lovely man and a hero too.
Thank you Brun Caswell & News 5 for a great story. Most of all thank you to the birder who saved that man’s life! 👍♥👍
What a wonderful man!
What a lucky fisherman!
Awesome teamwork!
Truly wonderful uplifting life story. So happy for both men.
Wonderful story! Mr. Rolph is a hero! And he even managed to get a photo of the beautiful bird he was after. ❤😅❤

Good story
I love cedar waxwings. So beautiful. Our minister gave out her sermon when a flock of cedar waxwings were on the church yard. Beautiful.
Love this story!

The Lord wasn't ready for him yet.
Then why did God toss him in the river?
So true...the first thing I thought was WOW!
Cedar wax-wing is in my backyard. Hey, bravo for saving this guy's life.
Beautiful!
This guy looked like John Locke from lost.
Wow!😮.
Amazing ending to the day!😮
You can replace a fishing pole but not a grandpa.
"Have you ever thought, "Wow"" -- I'm thinking that RN. 😜
God was helping.
You mean God knows Mr. Birder was going to take his daily walk again and thought he would spice it up by letting Grandpa nearly drown?
Nice catch. 👍🏻
He's the man ! ! !
I know quite a few people from there, and I NEVER heard, "Cay ah HO gah" until I watched this video. They all say, "Cay OH gah".
Fishing pole or grandfather? You make the call. LOL.
God bless…yeaaahhh🎉🎉🎉🎉🤩🤩🤩❤️❤️❤️
God put him there to save that guy
His daily walk put him there. God put Gramps in the water.
Good job.
I get that it was his grandson’s fishing pole but one needs to think…would the grandson rather have grandpa or a fishing pole?
Wow!😊
Ya sometimes u see that news lady in that dress and say WoW! 👀
Hero forsure!!
Show more of that reporter on the next story.
Amen! God makes the path clear and what a great testament to life! Thank you Jesus!
Good on him
Gods' intervention
Anyone else hate the Mockingjay getup of the news reporter?
But what had happened to this man? Was he unable to swim? Did he fall in?
I’m left wondering what his story is.
yes everything does happen for a reason, there are no accidents
❤
Cedar waxwings are cool.

Everything does happen for a reason but it’s not always positive as this cliche implies! Ugh!
Uh
It’s not him. It’s God directed his steps. God is a blessing controller of all things. Love you.
“Waxwings like to hang in low brush areas” no. They like tall cedar trees. cedar waxwings
