  • 5th day with new Greenhoe bass trombone. Still getting used to its intonation, but comments are welcome. I think Gary's team makes a divinely-designed horn.

    I wouldn't dare say that Greenhoes are the only horn to play - but it has done wonders for me given the teachers I've worked with and the training I have received over the years, plus my own experiences in my ensemble and solo playing. The standard options were already what I needed to do the job, also. From a customer service view, I had a great experience with them, but maybe not everyone does? Full-blown customizing is not always easy, either, from any company. Always try many horns!!!!!!

    A worth-while $7800. Wait time is about 3-6 months, but that's ok. go to greenhoe.com and check out the online store as well as the "trombones" tab to learn more about what it includes and the options available. Coupled with a Hammond Mouthpiece, it's truly fantastic, but I might have Hammond make a cup to EVEN BETTER suit the Greenhoe.

    @ashto2424 Personally, I find that Greenhoes have the Bach size of sound, the Conn color of sound, and Yamaha's consistency. I have only played on a couple Rath bass bones a while ago, with Haggmans. They sounded pretty good, but I think I would have liked them better with other valves.

      Is this a pre-Schilke horn? And the bell is conn?
      You sound great! The articulation is spot on and the sound is awesome.

      @@bassbonebart Full OG Greenhoe. Not a "Conn-optimized" horn.
      It's a solid horn to play. The TIS and open J-Bend really widens the sound, so it helps to use the tighter leadpipes/mouthpieces to have projection and tone that Bell-tuned horns tend to have naturally.

      @@kblauer thanks! I've wanted to try one for years but they don't come around often in Europe... Specially the TIS ones.

    @darkhtsht365 I'm assuming you have it now... it's great, isn't it? I would also recommend a Hammond 20BL or 21BL to compliment the horn... I'm actually considering talking to Karl Hammond himself and see if he might make a BML cup (like a counterpart to the tenor's ML cup) to improve the nearly perfect consistency of sound.

    what is the extra bracing on the slide? what does is do?

    • @kblauer
      @kblauer  Před 6 lety

      mr vengeance That extra brace is the primary tuning - it's my "tuning slide." I twist a little screw to adjust the basic tuning of the horn.
      Where the standard tuning slide would be is now only a continuous taper betweem the valves and the bell. The sound becomes more complete and pure from top to bottom.
      The slide does become slightly heavier, but I have a Greenhoe tenor and a Shires alto now, all with in-slide tuning mechanisms. You get used to the weight, and I think the sound is worth the weight.

    • @mrvengeance510
      @mrvengeance510 Před 6 lety

      So no standard tuning at the end iof the bell? you should do a video on the slide tuning.

    • @kblauer
      @kblauer  Před 6 lety

      Correct. The valves, however, do have their own tuning slides.
      I don't really do videos normally. This very old one was just me really liking the Greenhoe bass after I got it. Those particular makers now make M&W trombones, and Schilke now owns the rights and tools for Greenhoe trombones - I'm not familiar with how the Schilke Greenhoes sound to provide an opinion

    Greenhoes are THE best horns for people who want the darkest, fattest, yet stable sound. They are pretty darn consistent... That's all up to the player though.

  • @Atreyul
    @Atreyul Před 13 lety

    @hapa5 ... seriously?

  • @Atreyul
    @Atreyul Před 13 lety +1

    Very awesome. I think it could be a bit more crisp though...i thought the intonation was good and nice job on the technical passages. Keep it up!

    While I'm sure the poster of this video is enjoying his new trombone, I will be objective and say that Greenhoes are NOT for everyone. While they do offer a good range of options to customize, Greenhoe can be difficult to work with if you start asking for something that is not on their pre-made menu of offerings. They will spend more time trying to tell you that you don't know what you are talking about instead of working with you to create a truly customized trombone. Be careful.
