  • Hi everyone! In this video I go into more detail of how I fertilize my flowers. I also talk about the struggle of pricing your flowers and how my second and third farmer's markets turned out.

I think you are on the right track for pricing, especially "retail". If direct to florist's, which I focus on, then I try to stay on par with other wholesalers. But the edge we as local growers have is freshness, quality and selection. The economy makes for some challenges too, but keep plugging away. Molly wants to play! I love your ramblings!!

I sell my flowers for $20 a bunch and they are all pre-made. I price sunflowers and glads at $2/each or 3 for $5. Basil I put either $1 or $2/stem depending on how big it is. Zinnias and snaps are either $1 or $2 per stem depending on how big or how many buds. Lilies are $3 for a single flower up to $7 with 5 buds. Hydrangeas are usually $5. Alstroemeria is usually $3 per stem with multiple flowers on it. Dahlias are $2 for the small ball varieties and up to $4 for the bigger ones. I don’t use many dinner plates, but those would be $4-5. For foliage, I use ferns and cape honeysuckle and I price those at $1, sometimes it’s 1 big honeysuckle and $1, other times it’s 3 at $1. I normally always use 3 ferns and that’s $1. So for bouquets I made this weekend, it might look like 2 honeysuckle $1, big basil $2, 2 dahlias $8, 3 suns $5, statice $1, vitex seed spike $1, calla Lily $2. That’s my $20 bouquet. You can see some photos on my Instagram @lifemorecolorful. I grow everything on my small lot, currently growing on about 2000 square feet, but adding more every day. Hope that helps!

Great video! I liked seeing your real farm - flowers in different stages. Please continue to “keep it real”. So helpful! And I haven’t sold any flowers but here’s a comparison I saw recently- one gal had 2 types of bunches. Beautifully presented. Another had a mish mash of various flowers - some in buckets she sold by the stem - Lilly’s. It seemed to offer more choices even tho her stand looked less professional.

I do think it really depends on your demographics. That’s what makes it so hard. There’s no one size fits all.

I set my price at 20$ and they sell fairly well, we are in a small town Nova Scotia (Canada) zone 6. Consistency and simplicity is really important, and it does take time to build up a good customer base. I find that if someone wants to buy flowers, a few dollars more isn’t going to make a huge difference. They need to look abundant on the stand, so the higher price point does work because the bouquets will draw people in. Remember that wrapping takes time as well, so you can put a little more in the 20$ bouquets.

A suggestion :). When you edit your videos, maybe turn the volume WAY up. When CZcams switches to a commercial it’s like 20x’s louder than your video and I need to turn yours up full blast to hear it. I even connect it to a JBL blue tooth speaker to increase the volume. Thank you :)

Thank you Salina! I need to know these things! I use iMovie to edit and even though I do increase it, I think it’s just not translating well to youtube.

Have faith in your product. $20 a bouquet is on the mark. They will come around.

I'm just starting with Farmers Markets and the one I am at is super small in a small town. It's a college town so I'm trying to figure out what that market wants and what they will pay. They like the wildflower look more than the more formal, florist look, I think. My peonies totally bombed at the market, but I did find some customers on Facebook Marketplace. I find mason jar arrangements are doing better than wraps, which is fine because it makes use of short stems. I've had people ask me if I have vegetable starts and indoor plants. I can't do those without a nursery license. I'm considering it for next year.

I’m considering bedding plants for next year. No one at our market is doing them. I did get my nursery license just in case I wanted to sell anything potted.

Yes, the pricing is difficult - I look at the same resources as you but I think the area has a lot to do with it. I'm in a very rural area and I can't what I want for mine at all - people just won't pay it. I think in the cities where people don't grow flowers - we could get more! That's why I hesitate to do our farmer's market which is small. I went on Sat and there was a girl there selling beautiful full jars of flowers for $7..... no way! That's why I sell to florists although with this economy - they are slow as well!

I use the wholesale price sheet as a “map” haha Floral Shops charge so much for their flowers because their imported. Just because we can charge so much, doesn’t mean we should. It’s not sustainable for most of our markets, imo.

    • @freshcutflowerfarm
      @freshcutflowerfarm  Pƙed rokem +1

You’re exactly right! So much of it depends on your market, not someone else’s.

  • @southernarkansasgardener3983

Is there a Boutique/Gift shop or maybe a local coffee place in your area that you think would like to partner with you? I have been making wrapped Mason Jar arrangements and they are selling for $30 at a higher end boutique. To be completely honest, I feel like I'm massively underselling them, but the advice I've received over and over again, is to just keep the price for this growing season, then go up next season. We have a farmer's market, and that was my first plan, but I don't see how in the world we can keep our flowers looking decent when it's 90F by 8 am! I have FB and Instagram if you want to check them out! Meadow Hills Flower Company

    Jesus..only.60.00..is that .50 an hour..
I got all.excited..i found cut peonies at WALMART of all places...9.99..i would never buy others flowers but i have never ever had peonies in a vase at my house..and im pushing 80...im soo happy just looking at them..bucket list i guess..lol....my.glads have finally petered out..500 of them..and well I didn't.get many good blooms...heat set in way way too fast. My zinnias...same bed for last 7 years got a.virus...all died within 3 days or less..turned black and died...never seen such a thing...so that bed is COMPLETLY empty .
You must put a sign out about flowers are for now...not a funeral...lol...seriosly when i was about 40 i saw a similar sign...like if i cant have. (Maybe it was aford) fresh flowers blah blah blah... i have had them ever since...one way or another...
I do my flowers for free to people i know are having a hard time....i leave them on porches...and of course family and friends.
Nice garden...a lady i met at the local farmers market has been trying to.do flowers...i offered to come help her but i guess she thinks i would drop dead or something. She finally retired and i cant wait to see what she does in the furture.
