I would also suggest NIS Lighting pack, its been fantastic for creating very realistic setups.

I’ve been using shaders plus a lot. Putting a “lens” n front of the camera for reasons . Putting a plane of that material in front, behind objects for the diffuse. Bounce through displaced planes for caustics. super cool

Sorry can you expand further on that? It seems like you found a pretty interesting technique but i don't really understand what do you mean by bounce through displaced planes

Shaders Plus, the those transparent shaders that smouse makes. I apply those shaders to a subdivided plane and bend it like a lens with the proportional editing tool. I’ll put that in front of the camera to act as a refraction warping lens effect. I’ll also sometimes put an instance of that behind a subject but with the diffuse turned up, so the background is fuzzy as well . Or Layer between subjects. Basically, a really laborious way of recreating something I can do in two seconds with photoshop or a compositor but bending light instead of pixels . Lots of happy accidents. Edit: I’ve had good luck animating ripples on the planes as well. Did one scene like that and it looked like heat ripples from the ground during a sunset.
