    LYRICS:
    Isn't it amazing how a man can find himself alone
    Call into the darkness for an answer that's he's never known
    Isn't it amazing how God can take a broken man
    Let him find a fortune let him ruin it with his own two hands
    And he walks on up the hill
    on the rock on which he stands
    he looks back at the crowd
    And he looks down at his hands and he says
    I am a difference maker.
    I am the difference maker
    I am the only one that speaks to him
    I am the friendliest of friends of God.
    Isn't it amazing how a man can find himself alone
    Call into the darkness for an answer that's he's never known
    And he walks on up the hill
    on the rock on which he stands
    he looks back at the ground
    And he looks down at his hands and he says
    I am a difference maker.
    I am the difference maker
    I am the only one that speaks to him
    I am the friendliest of friends of God.
    I am on the fence about nearly everything I've seen
    And I have felt the fire be put out by too much gasoline
    We're all strangers passing through, place and time, afternoon
    Life is but a vision in a window that we're peeking through
    It's a helpless conversation with a man who says he cares a lot
    It's a hopeless confrontation about who might throw a punch or not
    And we are all transgressors, we're all sinners, we're all astronauts
    So if you're beating death then raise your hand but shut up if you're not.
    I am the difference maker
    I am the only one that speaks to him
    I am the friendliest of friends of God.
    I am the difference maker
    I am the only one that speaks to him
    I am the friendliest of friends of God.

    The best songs are written in such a way that each time you listen to them you discover something new or deeper meanings behind them. This way they can never be overplayed, they are new each time. This is certainly one of those songs. I have listened to this song for years and understand deeper and deeper interpretations of it every time I come back to it. Here is my take on it, which I believe is in line with the bands own comments in regard to its meaning.
    This song is about the dangers of pride in the heart of believers, about the deception we sometimes hold that it is us who works through God and not God who works through us. We build our lives on the gifts and graces of God only to somewhere along the way get lost in the belief that it was by our effort that we gained what we have, or by our power that we have or can make an impact. We climb on top of God, the rock which has sustained us, and we contribute all that has been gifted to us as the work of our hands instead of looking at the actual rock which we are standing on. We glorify ourselves claiming his works as our own, when in reality destruction is the only fruit our own effort has ever reaped. We pour the gasoline of our pride on the fire of his Holy Spirit thinking somehow we have any effect on his ability to accomplish his will. We end up in a futile and pointless attempt to accomplish Gods will instead of living and resting and taking refuge in it. It’s about coming back to the realization that our sovereign God will do what he wills when he wills in-spite of us, but instead, because of his love and so his glory may be revealed through us, he chooses to involve us despite our sinful and destructive nature. Every thing we know of Gods sovereign plan, nature, and glory was revealed to us by the Holy Spirit, and although sometimes we tend to believe that we can see the end from the beginning, fully knowing his purposes, in reality this side of heaven what has been revealed to us is just a blurry vision we see through the dirty window of our sinful nature (something I wish some theologians would better grasp. I am skeptical and borderline repulsed by those who are so full of pride and closed minded that they believe they have the monopoly on Gods nature and purposes like he is an equation who can be solved by the fallen mind of man.) The chorus of this song is a description of this false, prideful, works based, belief “I am the difference maker, I am the only one who speaks to him, I am the friendliest of friends of God.” My absolute favorite part of this song is that after the final verse/bridge where the singer realizes his false paradigm and the pointlessness/irony/futileness of his efforts he finally views his works and hisself rightly ” it’s a passive confrontation about who might throw a punch or not. We are all transgressors, we’re all sinners, we’re all astronauts. So if you’re beating death then raise your hand but shut up if you’re not.” That last line is very very significant because as a Christian we know the only one who beat death is Jesus Christ so essentially he silences his own pride and the pride of every man who has ever lived by acknowledging that even our salvation let alone the works that flow out of that salvation are not of any effort of our own but that of Christ’s. The chorus is then repeated but with the music being played louder, and more forceful, and with another voice joining it, as if some big revelation is coming to a head and as if the perspective is shifting, and then the listener has an indication that this and the last line of the previous verse are signaling that it’s no longer the man who is saying “I am the difference maker, I am the only one who speaks to him, I am the friendliest of friends of God” but now it’s Jesus.

      i feel like he could be making biblical references to the 4 gospels possibly about the world before Jesus came and how people, take for example the Pharisees made it seem that they were the closest to God and they had so much pride and they never acknowledged God for anything that in all actuality they were the ones making the differnece but when in reality they are just as dirty and sinful as the rest and no one can make a diference without God working through them And also that no one made as big a difference as jesus, and jesus was sent into the world to silence these voices because in the new testament it talks about how jesus called the pharisees out for being prideful and lacking fruit and thats what hes talking about in the last phrase before the final chorus.

    I cry when I hear this song. Every time. And I usually hear at the right moment. When my heart starts to get a little to big for its britches. It humbles me, reminds of where I am and who I'm not. I am not the friendliest of friends of God. I start to think that because I am active in the kingdom, read my bible, go to church, that I got it all together. When in reality its not me holding my world together. Its God. Its a dark area in many hearts we tend to cover up, though we all go through it. Pride.

    Truthfully, I have probably listened to this song close to one hundred times now. It has been well over a year, and I have discovered deeper meanings as time elapsed.
    On the surface, this song appears to be just another poetic piece of praise. The difference maker may be understood as Christ himself, in which case the lyrics would probably be appropriate. However, if one were to take a first person’s approach and assume himself in that same position, the lyrics adopt a standoffish and arrogant feel.
    This song is so relatable, because the protagonist is the steadfast and self-proclaimed difference maker that is me. The difference maker that is sometimes righteous in word, but seldom righteous in act. Bold but not brave, intelligent yet not wise. Attentive yet not discerning, strong in flesh yet weak in spirit. A difference maker who does not distinguish the different, let alone support it.
    The magic of this song lies in its dual-meanings throughout. The initial self-righteous gratification of singing this song, has turned into realization of my hypocrisy.

      Charles, that's a terrific analysis. The only thing that I would add is that it seems that towards the ending of the song, he begins to realize his hypocrisy (We are all transgressors, we're all sinners, we're all astronauts) and laments about the issues that the church has been facing for centuries (I have felt the fire be put out by too much gasoline).
      Powerful.

    "I feel like the beginning of the song is us asking ourselves are we really difference makers," he concluded. "How valuable are we, really? Towards the end of the song it comes around that God makes us a part of what He does, which is so crazy. It starts with us realizing that we don't get to make the rules. We don't control it, and we don't get to say what the timing is. It's not because of our talents. He doesn't need that. He needs our willing hearts." -Bear Rinehart

    The lyrics in the chorus, "I'm the only one who speaks to him, I'm the friendliest of friends of God" is referencing to how the Pharisees believed. It's written to be sarcastic, because any Christian knows that God is infinitely good and infinitely holy and that in our human condition, anything we do and say that is "good" does not come close in comparison with the Holy father. And the only thing that covers our sins and makes us "friends of God" is the blood of Christ! Nothing from our own hands!

    A lot of people I think are misunderstanding the message or at least don't get it... so here's my two cents. The band has actually said that this song is about how we start making a difference the moment when we surrender and give our lives up to God (watch Air 1's video interview about the song). Here's what I'd like to add: The song talks about being alone and ruining the fortune that God gives us (life, specifically when we try to live without Him) with our own two hands; in essence, we are broken by ourselves. But then the song talks about climbing up the hill and standing on the Rock (surrendering to God and making Him our Refuge and Strength), and then we become Difference Makers. That's at least the message that I get from it; it's been extremely encouraging to me and I hope this explanation helps people see this song in a new light.

      Bel bows down, Nebo stoops low;
      their idols are borne by beasts of burden.[a]
      The images that are carried about are burdensome,
      a burden for the weary.
      They stoop and bow down together;
      unable to rescue the burden,
      they themselves go off into captivity.
      “Listen to me, you descendants of Jacob,
      all the remnant of the people of Israel,
      you whom I have upheld since your birth,
      and have carried since you were born.
      Even to your old age and gray hairs
      I am he, I am he who will sustain you.
      I have made you and I will carry you;
      I will sustain you and I will rescue you.
      “With whom will you compare me or count me equal?
      To whom will you liken me that we may be compared?
      Some pour out gold from their bags
      and weigh out silver on the scales;
      they hire a goldsmith to make it into a god,
      and they bow down and worship it.
      They lift it to their shoulders and carry it;
      they set it up in its place, and there it stands.
      From that spot it cannot move.
      Even though someone cries out to it, it cannot answer;
      it cannot save them from their troubles.
      “Remember this, keep it in mind,
      take it to heart, you rebels.
      Remember the former things, those of long ago;
      I am God, and there is no other;
      I am God, and there is none like me.
      I make known the end from the beginning,
      from ancient times, what is still to come.
      I say, ‘My purpose will stand,
      and I will do all that I please.’
      From the east I summon a bird of prey;
      from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose.
      What I have said, that I will bring about;
      what I have planned, that I will do.
      Listen to me, you stubborn-hearted,
      you who are now far from my righteousness.
      I am bringing my righteousness near,
      it is not far away;
      and my salvation will not be delayed.
      I will grant salvation to Zion,
      my splendor to Israel.

    Today, this song got a new meaning for me.
    There are a lot of good explanations of the meaning of this song in the comments, and I love the fact that it has multiple meanings.
    Right now, during the online exams caused by the pandemic, there are a lot of students that are cheating on the exams. This song just reminds me that even if I might get a lower grade on the exam than others, as long as I am fair, I would contribute to The Difference Making Process. Like C.S. Lewis said: “Only a real risk can test the reality of a belief.”
    So, how can we tell people to act right in life if WE don’t stay true to what we believe in? And this is not because of my power, but because Jesus thought us to be fair and not to lie because the father of lies is actually the devil.
    This way, The Difference Maker, Jesus, is working through those who are willing to serve Him. We take no credit, all that we are is Because of Him, but we are difference makers together, serving Him.

    I feel like I needed to say this as if God was telling me to. Anyways I thought I found my fortune but much like the lyrics I, "ruined it with my own two hands". To put this to context, my fortune was a better relationship with God and winning a war that we all fight, sin and temptation. What I learned from this though is that the second you think you are good and you are winning, so you take things into your own imperfect hands is when you begin to lose. I learned that I need to remember that my flesh is week but God is the reason I was winning. God put us here for a purpose and he gave us each our own war to build our own character and relationship, life, etc... but he also gave us free will. The will to accept him or not. So those of you reading this I ask you not to shut him out keep him in because he is more than willing to fight your battles for you, he will be your best ally and he will provide all the resources needed to win your battles/war. I shut him out, I lost a battle, which is really discouraging but I will keep fighting now along with the best ally and I will find my fortune and I hope and pray that you all do to.

    This song is about the struggle between Pride and Humility. We want to be the difference maker but we're not. God is the difference maker and it is difficult because when He uses us, we want to take the glory in it out of our pride. Instead, we need to humble ourselves to give all glory to God.

    • @johnjohnson1657
      @johnjohnson1657 Před 6 měsíci

      @TreyMackey- Christ is a mind-set...it's a vibration of Love. As Christ pointed out the Kingdom of God is within you its up to each person to realize he isn't joking. All of us are exactly the same in our base essence and that essence is God which is the highest vibration of all...Pure Love. Christ didn't come here to save anyone. He came here to show each of us how to look within and Love as He has Loved. That's your spiritual awakening. That's your savoirship. It's called personal responsibility that should never be placed on anyone else. Paul wrote for me to live is Christ and to die is gain. He said this because he understood the concept Christ taught and he knew this on a meditative level...like christ told us all to do...meditate. So his life was a christ mindset and death was gain because he knew death to this world is physical only. You immediately peal out of your body and the gain is apparent. Chrsit left that vibration of God to teach us to Love. Not to place each person's sins on the shoulder of him or anyone else. Most...and I mean almost all Christians today still have no idea God didn't write thru Moses etc...they really think that's how the story goes because they're have no idea this story is the same from cultures prior to the Hebrew stage. I'm talkn 500 to 2000 yrs older than any Biblical texts. Religion took the Truth of Christ and molded Him into a fear based religion and Christians blindly follow like sheep. I'm 57 and I was a Christian for 51 of those years then ome day Truth came along opened my eyes and showed me a statement that spoke about Let us make them in our image...ya know the first modern Humans...and this was found in the Enuma Elish...a Sumerien text and the Enuma Elisha is faaaaaaaaar older than any old testament writings. Christianity has Turned the Love of Christ into the greatest lie ever sold to anyone at any point in history. Guess what I have now at 57? A relationship with christ and Freedom. Never would christ who is Love command me or anyone else to bow our knee to Him. That's not Love. That's fear. There is no fear in Love. I've never been happier in my life. I've never been more loving than I am now. Life is done with Love. Being kind. Helping others when they need it. You accomplish that in life and your impact changes the world. Religion in general all started from the same base concept thousands and thousands and thousands of years ago and that Base Essense was Love. As we see today that is not the case and we live in a world of turmoil and I'm peaceful at heart every day with no fear. None. I look forward to uniting with everyone again and with Christ...I'm stoked. This is a world that we develop who we really are and until we recognize who we really are chaos will always ensue. We are Love. LOVE is the only thing that is real. Everything else is an illusion...a lie that we have all kept on believing. I don't believe the lie anymore and I now have Freedom and Christ with me daily as well as what a Christian would call a guardian angel...we all have at least one...remember that cuz they've seen everything you've done and heard everything you've said or thought. Yet they Love you unconditionally. When humans decide as a whole to Love unconditionally as Chrsit and MANY OTHERS have taught us throughout history our world would literally be Heaven on Earth. It's right there...all you have to do is decide to Love be kind and help when needed. You change the world. That's huge. I wish you Love and the best in life.

    What he is saying is that many people talk about how they are "closer" to God than others. Simply put he is stating that in his own mind, in his own heart, in his own life, and his own relationship with God he is the difference maker. He is not saying that someone else is not. No one can take that from him. To him he and God is what matters the most. His best friend is God and he is Gods. We should all feel like this. He is stating the obvious. He and God are the only ones in their bubble. That is how it should be. If you choose to believe in God then you should choose to have a relationship with him and that relationship is yours with God and no one else's. Period!! Then with that established you can be a difference maker to those who don't know God.

    If you sit and watch this video, it is pretty telling that the other two are standing in front of him and then suddenly they are gone.
    He has said this is about balancing the great feeling you get when serving God and the arrogance you can start to feel if you forgot that it is God working through you not you doing something "with your own hands". We can easily ruin what God has given us when we get prideful.
    But clearly, there is a bit of him feeling like he was thinking he was the reason the band was so good, but realized he is nothing without them and nothing without God's blessing on his life.
    He has said that he almost cries every time he sings the climactic line.

    What I take away from it also, is that, even if we are the only ones who make a difference, we keep moving forward; even alone.

    This song is truly amazing. There's a lot of meaning and sense in this. I understand enough to know its not us that's making a deference in this world it's the God in us making a difference if we let him. We all have a purpose in this world because we're gods children, no matter what age.

    God certainly found me alone and broken and now he's making me into a man I could never dream of being before. It's been a month and a half and I have changed so much with God by my side. That's not to say it has been easy, because it hasn't, it's been hard and painful. I'm looking forward to the next month and a half to see how I change next. I've never loved nor been so excited about God before. It's about time. Praise Yeshua (Jesus)

    Do you wanna live this window of life blaming God and being self righteous and face the consequences or praise him with this short time we have here on earth? I know what I wanna do. God bless all of you

    This song has such special meaning to me...My brother took his own life 5 months ago and I listened to this song over and over as I drove from his house back to my family .... It gave me such supernatural peace that I can only describe as God telling me it will be ok. So thankful!!... I can't wait to see NEEDTOBREATHE in 3 weeks in Calgary!!

    I feel like this song has such a vast meaning and I love it. One segment that really spoke to me was "I am on the fence about nearly everything I've seen and I have felt the fire get put out by to much gasoline" It reminds me of the spiritual warfare that I was warned of and that I have gone through constantly since I really started believing. Its a hard uphill battle and I pray for others going through it but the only advice I can give is the same advice given to me, trust the word and read the bible.
