How to forge a medieval war bodkin arrow head with Hector Cole MBE

  • A quick video I took whilst doing a bow making course at Hector Cole`s workshop. he very kindly gave the students and myself a demo of making a Medieval style arrow head using traditional forging methods. I was a little unprepared so only had time to grab my hand-held video camera, so things are a bit shaky and out of focus in places, but you get a good idea of the speed at which these heads can be made and the sorts of processes involved.

    My longbows are 55 lbw for targets, 100 lbw for roving and 140 lbw for the French! I’ll be trying to make some Bodkins next week on a course. If they’re half as good as these I’ll be thrilled

    Fantastic stuff, Hector Cole is the go-to guy for historic arrowheads so it's great to see videos of him

    Remarkable skill, I wonder how long it took to get proficient at doing that, and how many must have been made in the times of war.

    I'm very interested in seeing those test shots. Every test of bodkin vs plate I've ever seen or conducted myself the bodkin has failed miserably. To the point historians had to re-evaluate the battle at Agincourt given how poorly they performed. Is there any filming of this test? I am VERY interested!

      You would need to talk to Hector about that

      Seconded. Every bit of info I've seen has indicated hardened plate armor and unhardened arrow points. The effectiveness relied on sheer volume of arrows, and finding joints or gaps in the armor. Particularly on the horses, not the men riding them. (Not that they never punched through, but that it was rare.)

    As a matter of interest, for bulk production, do we know if this work would have been done with multiple smiths in a shop, or individually. With a smith working full speed, how many irons might he have in the fire at once?

    • @longbows
      @longbows  Před rokem

      We do know from records that many `arrow smiths` were specifically making arrow heads and that's all they would have been doing

    Great video! Very, very interesting story about what must have been extremely common at one time.

    Mr. Cole makes great arrow heads, and I could learn a lot from him, but the armor examples he presented are unrealistic rubbish.
