    375g is about 3-4% of the weight of the tire (tyre) itself. So fine margins (especially with no marble collection after the race on the in lap). Easy to see how they would have set the weight assuming a tire of n laps, and if you have n+15 laps (that's only 25g of rubber a lap, less than an ounce) then you are light. Presumably Toto realized that he f'ed up by not telling Russell that Russell's strategy call would likely result in the tires being light by the end of the race, and this was a track you can't pick up weight on.
    Lots of references on line to the marble collection strategy.

      As the guys said in the video, normally at the end of the race the cars have a full in-lap to weave around and pick up the marbles from the track. At Spa, immediately after turn 1, the cars swing around and go back down the pit lane the wrong way to get to Parc Ferme, where the cars are then weighed by the FIA.

      It is a small amount. Cars start off with up to 110 kg of fuel and end with not a lot. A set of tyres can lose 3 kg during a race, and maybe more, especially if a 1 stop strategy is decided during the race, as it seems to have been. The boards underneath wear as well and lose weight
      1.5 kg is 0.18% of the required weight of 798 kg - not exactly a stunning advantage in any case, especially as any less momentum gained during acceleration, is counterbalanced by the recovery mechanism retrieving less electrical energy during braking.

      No, it doesn't. The tyres are not a constant weight, you have to figure that into your calculations. Slight advantage accelerating - but also slight disadvantage in energy recovery whilst braking because there will be less momentum because of the smaller mass. Some advantage in less braking effort. The advantage depends on the car accelerating hard or braking hard; it doesn't accelerate or brake for the whole of the race. It's almost impossible to quantify, but .03s seems low, being about .015% of a lap time, whilst the weight difference is 0.18%, ten times as much.

    A view from the UK. can someone enlighten me? Is the car weighed before the race and does it have a full or empty fuel tank. Does it also have a set of fresh tyres too? How do they account for the heavier weight of fresher tyres replaced on a 2 stop strategy and the lighter tyres from a 1 stop strategy? Can some engines burn more fuel in a race than others depending on how they are driven? Did i hear him say it was 1.5kg under weight? "They go around and pick up loose rubber rolled off their tyres during a race to increase the weight of the car for this reason" This so called 'Sport' has been totally and utterly emasculated. It has been robbed of its excitement for the global industries advertised on the cars.

    • @AutosportOfficial
      @AutosportOfficial  Před měsícem +1

      There is a minimum weight requirement, so no need to weigh before the race as all the cars are weighed at the end of the race. The cars are weighed without fuel. Yes, normally on the in-lap after the race, the cars would do a full lap and as you often hear, the engineers will ask the driver to complete an end of race procedure. This is exactly as you state, the drivers will deliberately look to pick up marbles, discarded bits of tyre rubber, and as the tyres on the car are still hot, that rubber sticks. This adds extra weight and can help make sure that the car is over the minimum weight. At Spa, there is no full in-lap at the end of the race due to it being such a long lap, so the procedure at Spa is that after turn 1, the cars loop back and head the wrong way down the pitlane directly to parc ferme to be weighed.

      "There is no minimum weight requirement before a race". If that's the case how would you know it was a lighter weight to start with? Or is it all down to the race teams to weigh their own cars and bulk it out to 600kgs with no fuel and fresh tyres i think is the maximum weight a car should start at? I can see you are an expert can you answer this question ; Russell's car was 1.5kg under weight i think. If this was done deliberately, how much of an advantage would he have had in the race?

    • @AutosportOfficial
      @AutosportOfficial  Před měsícem +1

      The minimum weight of the cars with tyres and without fuel is 798kg,. The cars can be called to the weigh scales at any point during the race weekend by the FIA. The regulations also state that the car must not go below the minimum weight. The cars are also weighed at the start of the weekend, and random cars are selected across the weekend. There is no specific weight check ahead of the race. The rule is very clear cut, so it really is not worth the team risking anything as the penalty is a disqualification from the race or exclusion from the event. 1.5kg underweight is approx 0.040s per lap, but if the issue that caused the car to be underweight is due to tyre degradation due to a long second stint on the tyres and the lack of the option to pick up marbles on the in-lap after the race, then the weight loss would be a linear effect and therefore the speed increase would also be linear. So it is not a simple answer.

    • @robertstancer4469
      @robertstancer4469 Před měsícem

      @@AutosportOfficial
      I'll make this as simple as i can. If the cars are not weighed BEFORE a race but rely on the honesty and integrity of the teams, why do they all of a sudden insist on weighing AFTER the race? If they are weighed before a race then there would be no argument regarding tampering, would there. Common sense tells you this but it seems reading your replies i'm struggling to see any of it. Or do you think Mercedes would secretly take off 1.5kgs of car AFTER it's been weighed? Can you also answer my question about what advantage being 1.5kgs under weight give you please?

    • @AutosportOfficial
      @AutosportOfficial  Před měsícem

      Ok, so the cars are weighed after the qualifying session, the cars are then placed in what is called "Parc Ferme" conditions which means that the teams are only allowed to change parts or elements of the car under the supervision of the FIA. There are cameras in each of the garages, that are monitored by the FIA to control this. The teams know the rules and the consequence of breaking the rules relating to minimum weight. If the teams decide to break those rules then will be discovered by the monitoring team or by the post race weight checks. So these incidents are usually down to a mistake in the teams calculations rather than a deliberate attempt to gain an advantage. Throughout F1 teams will attempt to push the limits all the time, this leads to very fine margins. Occasionally they get it wrong and and pay the price.
      As to why the FIA don't weigh the cars directly before the race, that is not a question I can answer, but the onus is on all competitors to ensure their cars meet the legal requirements laid down by the FIA at all times during an event.
      With regards to the advantage of being underweight by 1.5kg, I explained in my previous answer that if this was down to tyre degradation then the advantage will be a linear equation in line with the linear degradation of the tyre as it wears down. If however the underweight issue was a constant, for example the car was underweight from the start of the race, then per lap the advantage would be roughly 0.04s per lap, over the total race distance that advantage would equate to roughly 1.76 seconds at the end of the race.
