How to fix a car horn

  • In this video i will show you how to dissassemble, clean, repair and reassemble an A.C. Delco horn found on 70s 80s and 90s cadillacs and other GM vehicles. NOT TROUBLESHOOT YOUR HORN PROBLEM! Once you have established your problem to a mechanical malfunction within the horn, (Not an electrical problem within the car) then this video should help you.

    Lol it actually did help me troubleshoot my horns because I'm an IDIOT. I have those same horns or very similar in the A and F notes in this '89 Firebird which I acquired last summer, and they never sounded off. I always assumed that the horns were busted but I just didn't know how to test them properly because I had no idea how those one-wire horns work as far as power wire and ground go so thank you for showing how that works! I feel like an idiot for not figuring out by myself that they were grounded THROUGH the mounting bracket onto the car. In retrospect I cant believe it wasn't more obvious. I finally tested them correctly and determined that the horns themselves are just fine so I'm hoping it's the relay. I only just figured out how to expose it from looking online so the next step is of course to do that and then hit the horn button to see if the relay clicks or not. Fortunately the relay for the horn is right underneath the steering column so I shouldn't have a problem doing that and I guess I'll go from there. The horns are a bit rusty with paint bubbling and peeling off so I'm probably going to use your technique just to clean them up a bit so they don't rot any further and then I don't have to spend a bunch of money on new Delco horns. Thanks again!

    I'm about to take the stock horn out of my 2017 Civic Hatchback and install a Cadillac 4-note system. I went to two junkyards and pulled three sets of horns (eight horns from two '95 Devilles and four horns from a '96 Deville). I'll test them out soon. I'm sure I can put together one whole working set out of the twelve. Some look like they're top notch for being 20+ years old, but some definitely have got weather-worn over the decades.
    Thank you for this video. I'm confident enough to pull them apart and fix them if I have to, now.

    Recently pulled my horns of a 79' vette because they didn't work. I haven't bought replacements yet because I really wanted to try to save them. I will give this a try. Thanks for the share.

    Great video and troubleshooting of your horns. Tho I didn't have the benefit of this video years ago while I was rebuilding the horn on my Norton commando which included rewindind the coil as well you covered all of the problems that I encountered . Thank you for sharing your horn repair experience with us all!

    Great video. I put 4 note horns on all my cars. On about 1/3 of the horns I have repaired, the connector was either rusted, and/or the magnet wire needed to be re-soldered. You need to scrape the lacquer insulation off the end of the magnet wire in order to get the solder to stick. It is pretty easy to get the solder to stick to the actual terminal post side. I always polish the two contacts with 600 Grit sandpaper.
    You can test the horn that you repair the wire on by screwing it all together without Permatex and applying 12v to it. It will sound lousy, but it is just a test to see if you get continuity and oscillation of the diaphragm.
    Also, make sure you mark where the two halves line up. It is possible to glue the whole thing together with the mounting bracket in the wrong place.
    I always paint the inside bare metal with POR-15 because water gets in there and rusts it out from the inside.
    Then I put on the permatex and screws and screw it together, and paint it. I almost always have to turn the adjusting screw out in order to make it as loud as I want it. I make them as loud as I can get them!
    FYI. . . you cannot buy 4 note horns anywhere, and you can only find them in Junkyards if you are lucky. They were mainly in Cadillacs but were also in Roadmasters, and the big Buicks and Oldsmobiles too. I don't think they were in any Chevys.

    Thank you for this great video. I watched this like 4x and finally got to work today. I had two Delco horns not working, both the very rare C and D note.
    On the C note *I* made a major F*, I dremeled a bit too harsh and ruined the coil. Half of it around the Dremel bit :(
    So for those doing the same referbishment: be carefull not to dremel too much to the side, because that is where the coil is.
    So that one is on me, ruined.
    The D note was very rusty and its diaframe was 1/3 rusted, holes. Gone. Rest seems OK and rust inside removed.
    Hence a question: do you now know what causes the actual note?
    Is it the moving diaframe itself, the body where the coil resides, or is it the shell shaped amplifyer? What makes the difference in tone?
    Obviously, I now do have parts to create 1 working horn from this mess of two broken ones.
    I'll give it a try. Still I need either an extra C or D note to get the complete 4-set. Until now, I had 2 Delco horns on two vehicles.

    Gerald, I have a horn that the contact point broke off...can it be replaced if the take down occurs as your video has shown?

      No, the contact is rivited into the plastic which is pressed into the horn casing. If you have any contact left sticking out of the plastic, i suggest soldering a wire to it and crimping a male connector to it.

      Gerald Carroll the horns I have are from a buick Roadmaster. The one that is broken is the D note from the passenger side. It has a # on it as follows: 16574. Is there any difference in that and a universal D note I can get from the local parts store in terms of decibles...This is for a Ranger project truck I'm working on and I particularly like to tone of the 4 note horn!

    Great video. I am fixing my C note and it works until I install the parts that need to be bolted down. At that point, no spark on the battery. I feel like the diaphragm loses it's flex.

    The screw on top of the horn adds or relieves pressure on the inside contacts of the positive current
    By dailing out that screw out counter clockwise one half turn the horn becomes louder , I'm not sure why they have it adjusted to make it softer maybe due to power draw or noise ordinances, IE NYC wear people use their horn a lot. But when running that wonderful ACDF notes delco remy quad horn setup louder is what your after.That may or may not cause that plastic to get down inside the electromagnets but I'll find out.seems the ones needing repair are factory set with a softer tone and not used much
    So maybe more use and the electromagnet going further into the hole with use may actually keep them working longer. Anyhow they are louder.
    Datsun made some almost exact replicas of the delco ones caled miyamotohorn. And turning the screw atop the horn a half circle counter clockwisenthey get twice as loud.then get a pair of those fiamm cheap new car horns for higher notes to mix with thebdatsun lower notes 70s horns and you get a quad set up and have a china&Japan train horn in the econo bubble cars... The delcos are getting harder to find and getting spendy too.great to know they can be repaired...

    Nice vid, but I’ll just spend $25 on a new horn. My time is worth more than the time to go buy screws, buy a gasket, grind shit.
    It’s a throw away part.

    the paint is hazardous, it is a bad idea to do it in basement without ventilation. Humans lungs are not strong enough to withstand chemical abuse. You and the camera person should go get yourself check with your doctor. Anticipate future breathing problems

I respectfully decline your advice to visit a doctor. But feel free to paint your horns in a well ventilated area if you like..... our not, i don't care....

      Yes but the garbage replacement junk is inferior to the original sound these classic horns produce... And when restoring a classic vehicle, the more ORIGINAL parts you can rebuild the better. You want hear a HONK HONK from a Cadillac, Not an eep eep....
