Aloha mai e Kumu Leato,
I just wanted to add more mana'o.
My family's specialty is the hula pahu, and my tūtū was a cousin of Pua Haʻaheo.
When the ʻaui and hela pahu step is employed for a hula pahu, the beat count is 7. There are many variations of it such as; 4-hits of the pūniu, 3-hits of the pahu; or, 1-hit of the pahu, 3-hits of the pūniu, 1 pahu, 1 pūni, 1 pahu. Tūtū Pua created his own beats, but still kept it in that 7 count.
Kauʻi did a very exciting beat, but kept it within the traditional 7 count. It sure was a fantastic performance.
