    • @runthenumbers9698
      @runthenumbers9698 Před měsícem

Luka MVP hype is heating up at EXACTLY the right time
Tomorrow night, the 2 longest current win streaks in the NBA come head-to-head. The Mavericks (6) and the Rockets (11).
The Pelicans are rn taking on Boston (the best team in the league)
If the Pelicans win tonight and the Mavericks win tomorrow, that means the Mavericks will steal the longest W streak in the NBA (7) from the current leader (the Rockets) and take the 5th seed from New Orleans (Tied record, but Mavericks lead in conference record), and will be 1 or 2 games out from the Clippers (tie goes to Clippers).
At that point, Luka will get some MVP respect. Keep in mind that Luka is far more marketable than Jokic at this time.MVP voters are sick of voting for him and he's not a very marketable NBA asset. Luka is far more marketable. And MVP isn't just voted for by the league... the media gets significant voting power too.
I don't want to call the game vs the Rockets "important" but to Luka's MVP chances, it kinda is.

Luka now, LeBron a few years ago, Larry Bird in an era with much fewer 3s & fewer chances for Forwards to handle the ball.
Guys that can create space anywhere, can post up, can finish at the rim & can consistently make passes that look like 2K glitches.

I think teams choose to blitz Luka is because he has a really good Midrange game where if you try to trap him after the pick he'll just pull up and hit the two. He also can somehow prevent defenders from recovering like he gets past you it's over, no recovery for you my guy. Luka is also mad good at finding the right pass when everything gets chaotic either finding the next pass, the lob threat or the open man on the perimeter. so might aswell just get the ball out of his hands early.

Here is the reason why teams blitz Luka... Kyrie missed 22 games, Lively missed 19 games, Maxi missed 37 games, Exum missed 26 games, Green (so far) missed 19 games. nd we got 2 new big totation pieces at the deadline. All season Dallas couldnt built any real chemistry on the court, cause the rotations (and starting lineups) were basically changing every other game. So different bigs in the short role with different wings on the perimeter every game. Means taking the ball out of Luka's hand and playing 3 vs 4 on defense was the better decision. Not a good one, but better then Luka doing his thing in normal P&R coverages. That drastically changed since the team got mostly healthy (Green is still out) and after we got Gafford/Washington. Teams just havent completely adjusted to it.

When older stars like tmac or ai say they can average 40 in todays nba, they mean it. The other "greats" are watching the games at home without knowing by experience the amount of stamina it takes to guard in the league with a pace as fast at is has know with all the switching it requires...
It is easy to see the game at home and say I would've done this or that... many of them got injured on a much slower game, so it doesn't even make sense for them to be more reliable when their bodies would require even more conditioning...

I don't believe that is the case and I view Lebron as a top 2 player ever.
This era of basketball has produced three of the best offensive specialist ever : Giannis (a rim attacking terror), Embiid (a player the size of Shaq with Kobe's skillet) and Luka (a masterful playmaker and shotmaker). These three guys do not sniff the 40 ppg average while having all the skillets and size advantage to be able to do so. If they cannot then I don't believe that the 2010 version of Lebron would be able to. 35 pts yes but 40 no.
The gap between 2010 Lebron and 2023 Giannis is quite small. Lebron wasn't the playmaking, IQ Genius that he became during his tenure in Miami. He was more a raw athlete beck then, like Giannis is but with a bit less defense and rebounding.
If Giannis peaked at 32 ppg, then I don't believe that 2010 Lebron would magically get 8 more points a game in a season simply driving to the basket..

For most of the season, the Mavs have had issues with rotational players being consistent shooting or guys being healthy, which throws off rhythm. Considering the struggles they had on defense for months (which the organization was okay with), teams were basically letting Luka and his hero complex run the game. Either he has a Herculean game and nearly beats a team single-handedly or he differs to his teammates who time after time fall short. Having Kyrie HEALTHY & getting guys who can force turnovers & get out and run at the deadline limits your opportunities to blitz him in a half court set. Bron not being honest with himself here saying “because I always made the right read”. Yet immediately days after he doesn’t get why guys like Luka and Harden do get blitzed and make the right reads. It’s because he wasn’t an elite shooter. Teams could match up with him 1v1 and they’d either hope he settles for a jump shot or load up on him with help defense and settle on someone else taking the shot when he kicks it out.
Whereas with Luka and Harden, they’ll torch anyone 1v1 from the three. These guys average damn near 40% from three on a diet of entirely off the dribble contested shots, so you can’t really afford to let them iso in those situations. Their patience and ability to attack the basket also makes them even more unpredictable for help defense, so theyd rather get the ball in someone else’s hands and get them to initiate a quick action that their more likely to stop.
To Brons benefit and it’s touched on in this video is that Harden and Luka play in the modern game where everyone on the floor can shoot giving you a ton of open space to attack. In Lebrons day, there might be one guy on the floor at any given time shooting 35% or more from three. Whereas the Mavs and Rockets were built to have 3 elite shooters and a lob threat as outlet valves to compliment their iso scoring.

As a coach. I am not perfect and don’t know it all but you don’t have to blitz Bron cause he doesn’t shoot off the screen like that.
To blitz it’s a chase over top under guy rushes the ball handler. With Bron the big drops and leave gap for defenders to go under the screen cause he doesn’t shoot the 3 off it like that. He gets down hill on screens so in drop Bron is coming at you more so than pulling up.
    Just my thoughts
