Abracadabra's hip moves were so iconic that Psy borrowed the dance for his MV "Gentleman" which included a cameo from Gain. Brown Eyed Girls were one of the first groups I had seen when I got into KPOP along with 2NE1 etc... so I has happy to see you react to them. I had never seen the last two vids. Wonder Woman was awesome and we need more of that, it was super cool but the last song "Abandonned" had every hair on my body standing up - it was mesmorizing. I didnt know they were still making music super cool!

Brown Eyed Girls have always been one of those groups you never really knew what would come next. Would they release a power ballad? Would it be a song of pure strong femininity? Would it be a sexy dance track? I've always loved how diverse and ICONIC this group is.

THIS MADE ME SO HAPPY TY TO THE PERSON WHO REQUESTED THIS!!! BEG have always been grown women being grown women and pushing the envelope since debut and have never apologized for it. Their power and confidence and next level talent are why they’ve sustained and continue to be relevant after nearly 15 years. I love them fully and will never be able to choose a bias. I knew you’d love them as soon as I saw this video and I’m so glad you’ve discovered them!

At the start Myrio Jea and Narsha lied about their age but after Abracadabra came out, they said fuck it, and announced that they are 30
Love, the classic, my god, first song i heard from them T^T it was insta love
Abracadaba took Korea by storm, lots of parodies and covers, everyone was dancing to it.
That floor dance? Was banned on music shows don't remember if it was also banned on the public tv stations...
Sign, one of my absolute fav song from them. In 2010 i was struggling learning that fan dance from the chorus and i still remember it!!!
MY GOD, it's been years since I saw the mv, but i recognized the actors!!!!!!!! The bad guy is a super famous but right now i don't remeber it's name. The one that tries to save them is Ryu Deok Hwan!!!!!! Amazing actor! I'm in shock XD
Sixth sense, my first comeback with the girls!!!!! Also one of my fav song from them.
I remember that the mv director talked in a interview about all the symbols in the mv but I only remember that the red jacket on Ga In was of her boyfriend that was killed
Wonder women, a masterpiece of mv!!! I Think the song is a remake of an older song....
Also! The drag queens, are from Neon Milk!!!!!!! A korean drag show production team! The one that you liked the make up is Nana Kim, the other drag queen is Bambi, the founder and boss of neon milk, the pole dancer is vita mikju! Also some aren't drag queen, but they didn't have enough people so they called some friends XD like jonah who is the choreographer of the dance and Bambi fiance, you see him in the middle of the final dance break!!!
    They have an CZcams channel!!!!
My god, this is long!!!!! I'm sure no one will read it XD

So glad you got the chance to check them out. They are to me the most mature, dominant, powerful girl group in kpop history. This was part of the first wave of the 2nd generation They are just an anomaly, because there were sexy concepts group during that time, but they do it in a way that is empowering, don't know the right word for their impact. We will never see groups like them again in kpop, since no company will take the risk to try this concept. One of the side effects of Kpop becaming globally popular and be the norm in mainstream popular culture sacrifices some of its wild side, because being popular means take less risk.

That reaction was everything I hoped it would be when I saw the video title, fantastic. Brown Eyed Girls were the second k-pop group I really got into after 2NE1 and they're still up there as one of my favourites. In fact JeA is probably my favourite vocalist of any pop genre, period and Miryo is my ult bias (though Dami from DC is pretty close on her heels) so glad you liked them.

  • @justinjyeung
    @justinjyeung Před 3 lety +64

Brown Eyed Girls debuted in 2006, with the leader, JeA, actually scouting out each of the other members. She had done some OST work herself. She picked Narsha, who she remembered as being a good singer from high school, and Miryo, who had been a well-known rapper from the "Honey Family", a group from the late 90s or so. Ga In was scouted when she failed an audition and met Narsha in the bathroom afterward, and was invited to join. Fun fact, they still don't actually have an official fandom name.
Yes, they had been faceless for a while, though still promoting their songs on music shows, but they began to appear in their MVs around 2008. Yeah, Miryo is the OG female rapper and imo the most iconic female rap voice in K-pop. Also, Ga In really defied beauty conventions at the time for her signature single-eye line look, compared to the "ideal" double-eye lines.
Oh dear, a correction: "L.O.V.E." was released in 2008. One thing to be careful of for 2nd-gen groups is that their songs were released when CZcams wasn't as ubiquitous, and so they can be prone to reuploads. Even SM songs had reuploads, so their view counts aren't totally reliable.
"L.O.V.E." was before their transition to more mature concepts, which occurred in 2009 with "Abracadabra". The members were even concerned that it would flop, but instead it skyrocketed them to the forefront of K-pop, despite coming from a small label (Nega Network). Partly a reason they could pull off such a risque concept is that 3 of the members were in their late 20s at the time. I'd also like to point out member Narsha, who got a small star tattoo on her wrist before "Abracadabra", and is probably one of the first female idols (and maybe idols in general) to have visible tattoos. Of course, some broadcasts at the time had to censor it still.
Oh, another correction: "S.I.G.N." was released in late 2009. Also, you have to check out a live stage, it may have been the first choreography in K-pop to use folding fans as props. The one you're hearing go into the deep register, I think that's been JeA both times, her vocal specialty is the depth in her voice, both in a lower register but also when belting as well. Narsha's specialty is to hit high notes very smoothly, while Ga In's voice is pretty clear and good for holding the main melody. This can be heard well in live performances of "Abandoned".
"Sixth Sense" was released in the same year as other empowering hits like SNSD's "The Boys", 2NE1's "I Am the Best", and T-ara's "Cry Cry". Yeah, that was the year K-pop really started going for that kind of mood which, in a way, has translated into today's "love yourself" message. (The idols' "I love myself/do what I want", translating to "fans, love yourselves".) I will also say this was a time when plastic surgery could be considered "scandalous" at the time in South Korea, but Brown Eyed Girls unapologetically said "it's okay".
For some of their more vocal-centric songs, I have to recommend "Second" (from 2006), "Cleansing Cream" (from 2011), and "Snowman" (from 2020 actually!), in particular there's like a live recording version of "Snowman" on CZcams that is just spectacular. After all, you know they're vocal legends when they get invited to Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook for like every comeback XP

MIryo is one of if not still the most credited female songwriter in South Korea, such a powerful rapper and lyricist. Gain has the lower register of the main three singers, Narsha and Jea tend to hit the highs though I think they could all drop lower if needed.
Oh, you asked about Sign, nearest I know (I dont know if it was ever really mentioned in interviews anywhere or anything) has the guy fighting to get to where the girls are being held, the boss man having psychic abilities of some sort (he flings away the guys piled up on our hero, does a few other things) and the girls, who may be powering the boss guy's abilities, are reaching out to our hero. He gets there and has the final confrontation where he kills the big bad, and thinks the girls are all dead until Gain jerks in the water, and goes to free her, but isn't successful in saving her. The eye change at the end suggests he is the inheritor of the powers.
Abracadabra is a revenge/kill the abuser sort of video, you caught on to how Sixth Sense is commentary on how media and industry expects certain ideals and they're rebelling against it (which their whole existence is a rebel against it as the person who introed you to them mentioned!) Kill Bill is just fuckin fun spoof of the movies and I adore it. Brave New World suggests them moving into kind of another phase of their careers as older performers. Wonder Woman and Abandoned are tied together, I think the story for Abandoned actually comes before Wonder Woman as the essence of a dark 'The Jack' spirit is preying on innocent lover energy with the ghost brides, and then it moves to trying that again with the lovely gaggle of queens, who save the day :D Im probably off on Wonder Woman and Abandoned, but Im so glad that they still are doing things as an example of proud, strong and still amazing older women in an industry that tries to cling to youth and discards so many when they hit their mid 30s, while they're on the edge of 40.

As much as BEG have very sexy dance moves in their earlier music videos during the beginning of the Brave New World era they admitted that they are getting older and their legs can't hold up with the moves as mush as it used too. During that era, BEG had an inside joke where they jokingly said that they could've had more sexy dance moves in Brave New World if it weren't for leader JeA who is the eldest in the group and can't dance to save her life. This isn't a bad thing as JeA herself acknowledges this fact but she says she tries her very best as BEG's maknae and main dancer Gain is sometimes the one in charge of their choreographies and is having a hard time adjusting and teaching them. I may not be too accurate but there's a clip of them talking about this here on CZcams and I can't seem to find it.
BEG is also the first group who don't care about the visuals and typical girl group standards as:
    1. They don't shy away from admitting that they are of old for an idol group when they started out
    2. They pushed the sexy concept to a higher standard
    3. Their leader JeA admits her flaws
    4. Miryo admits that she had plastic surgeries done to her face
    5. Narsha is the first idol who does suggestive sexual humor on variety shows without being axed for it
    6. Narsha openly admits that she uses wigs and was the first female idol who had a pixie haircut, it wasn't usual for female idols to do this but Narsha pulled it off
    7. Girl group maknaes are usually cutesy back then but Gain is the first girl group maknae who doesn't give a f**k, kinda like what Minzy and Hwasa turned out to be
    8. The 3 elder members (JeA, Miryo, Narsha) are not shy in taking dance lessons from their maknae Gain
    9. Even as though they're all now in their 30s, Gain can still hold up with the dancing that even junior artists find her dance routine very difficult
    10. They're the first and only female idol group who openly says they want to date and get married and none of their fans would even be possessive and toxic about it
    11. The first girl group who had tattoos

And that is why 2nd Generation KPOP exploded. Not just because of BEG but BEG was the Spice added into Wondergirls, Girls Generation, T'ara, 2AM , 2PM, Those were the groups that got me into KPOP. Note BEG's Gain and 2AM's Jokwon became the iconic ADAM Couple. ... my BEG Bias is Miryo .. she has crazy high IQ and was an underground rapper. but I really love all of them, Jea The leader also had huge input into all their songs and MV. she basically chose the members and formed the group. Narsha was a beast in the variety shows. Love them so so much.. !! 2AM and 2PM combined and created a crazy parody of abracadabra "Dirty Eyed Girls" LOL.. It was a Shockingly Mad time !! 2nd Generation KPOP.. sigh... those were the days.... .. I recommend some of their lesser known songs. "Love is - JeA & Miryo" , "MIRYO 'DIRTY'"

I'm so happy seeing people discovering BEG now, they're SO amazing! Wait until you hear their bsides, their albums are all so cool really!!!!!!!!!!! And all their solo career are also that iconic, especially Gain's ! As expected from her, it's always really sexy but also provocative, she talks about sexuality, sexism, abuse, death... She's an amazing performer really! And JeA's song Dear Rude is AMAZING, it would have been perfect for Halloween tbh the MV is kinda creepy lol but I L O V E it!
Enjoy and good luck, Narsha once said if their content was censured, it meant they succeeded, and she wanted to do a concert only for adults who are 32+yo because they did a concert forbidden to minors once but some people complained that it was too sexy :D... They aren't afraid of sexiness, take it or leave it lmao!

im late to the party but... if you attented dreamcatcher concert, you might want to react to gain's solos, bloom and paradise lost. To be honest, BEG's mvs are masterpieces, even after so much time, they still have one of the best storylines in the music videos, and it's always so well done, sometimes the concept it's sexy, other times it touches very sensitive topics, like Sixth Sense, but other times, it's simply fun like Kill Bill. They are not afraid of showing those things in the music videos and it's amazing. Their solo stuff doesnt stay behind either. Miryo's solo Dirty is one of my favorite solos ever (even if it's old) and the music video is... priceless lol Gain's releases are special too, she is considered to be a sexy icon by this point and she is not afraid to talk about sexuality in her solo songs. She is my bias, i love her to hell and back lol

There are a lot of groups that people like to credit as the first "sexy concept" girl group: AOA, Girl's Day, Sistar, Exid but I will always refer back to these OGs who were always so unpredictable with their concepts each comeback. And these girls are OGs, debuting even before SNSD, Wonder Girls and 2NE1.

A turning point in my life was when I moved to Korea in 2009 and one of the first kpop songs that I really paid attention to in the bars was Abracadabra. It was so different and damn GaIn had me hooked. Years later in lockdown my husband and I have been getting into kpop again and I am more into Miryo. I don’t even know why I didn’t pay more attention to her before!

AMAZING!!!😍😍 I seriously have the biggest smile plastered on my face this entire reaction.. just by witnessing someone getting to see such Masterpieces and getting blown away by their talent.... All of them are Exceptional singers... Miryo is without a doubt one of the BEST rappers, JeA is one heck of a vocalist, and both Narsha and Gain are terrific. Gain solo career is just *chef's kiss. Miryo and Narsha's duet performances throughout the years are the best thing I've ever seen (please check it out). JeA's performance on Masked Singer, is God Tier... And did I mention Miryo's RAP!!! Yeah.... Miryo's RAP IS insane... Check her solo stuff, her Invitation cover...WOW!!! NOT TO MENTION her bit in Kill Bill...
No one does it like them....really!!!

BEG as a group and Gain as a soloist are timeless gay icons. Paradise Lost is such a feminist anthem...with the added benefit of being sexy af. and it's been a while but i'm pretty sure Gain's song and MV "Bloom" were playing with lots of thinly veiled metaphors for female orgasms. At the time it was pretty shocking to see that in kpop. Enjoy the journey!!

Yup, Brown eyed girls is from a higher level from the normal k-pop songs or group, i don't consider myself as a hardcore fan but i do like them a lot and i discovered them kind of late too like around 2013 a little randomly. Before Brown eyed girls, i discovered Ga in as a solo artist with her iconic song Bloom and i became a huge fan of Ga in, later i learned that she was a member of Brown eyed girls, i knew the group but just by name. I'm a kpopper since 2003. So i had to check Brown eyed girls too since Ga in was in it and i did like their songs, but the song that hook me to Brown eyed girl as a real fan was their song Kill Bill i liked the song a lot like i liked the kill Bill movies. The rest is history.

I didn't see this mentioned. I only noticed this recently, but Bae Yoonjung was the choreographer for Abracadabra (She's the dance mentor in Produce, the scary one), she ALSO was in the video as one of the backup dancers. Definitely present during Gain's famous dance break. You can see her more clearly in the performance video. She's also the one at the very left at the beginning of the video.

Legends never die. Brown Eyed Girls debut in 2006 and are still together. The "Abracadabra" music video will forever be associated with "The Arrogant Dance", the dance where you cross your arms, lean back slightly, and swing your hips side to side. PSY paid tribute to the Brown Eyed Girls by performing "The Arrogant Dance" in his 2013 music video "Gentleman".
