    It lost its grip on the zeitgeist? Really, it’s one of the most popular anime of all time, like even for season 7 we had a metro boomin tweet hyping it up in the middle of Kendrick and drake beef. It still does insane numbers on social media to this day with even celebrities still bringing it up for it’s influence

      The franchise has a die hard fanbase that will consume just about anything MHA related regardless of its quality especially since the manga and anime are reaching their endgame soon. That speaks nothing of the series' quality which has been dipping drastically for years now. The series may still be popular and relevant now, but if the series winds up getting a terrible rushed ending, which is looking to be the case, don't expect people to look back on this show fondly 10 years or so after its conclusion.

The anime isn’t doing the worst job, only horrible thing is the cc and sky. The rest is good. Just wish they’d keep the intro level of quality and shading, cuz with that it would be demon slayer levels of atmosphere with a way better story. Also hope they fix the issues with pacing and the end of the manga

      The thing is MHA isn’t a case of “it’s among the best things we have rn”, like One Piece currently is
      More accurate, it’s feeling like the “CoD/Fifa of anime” in the sense that, yes, it’s popular and kinda talked about frequently, but very undeniably, there is something off about it. If there wasn’t, we wouldn’t have seen as much consistent “”””hate””” and valid complaints for almost 2-4 years in a row as we do.
      It might have to do with the protagonist being the least interesting and memorable protag in like the top 20 anime

    To be fair I think making MHA more lighthearted is what kept it in top 10 best selling for almost a decade. Simply put looking at the modern shounen market : CSM,JJK,Hell´s Paradise are sharing the audience who prefers darker shounen, and DS and MHA share the audience who prefer more light-hearted shounen.
    I personally would also prefer a bit more higher stakes in the show, and even the manga, but...I see why MHA being more lighthearted was probably the correct move for the mangaka and SJ. And why the less gritty appear is martketing wise what tells this anime apart from the rest...tho I do think BONES can still do much better within the realms of keeping it looking lighthearted.
    Either way I am still really loving the manga and anime, even got my other 28+yo friends into it and they became obsessed. Weirdly I think this show is for kids and burnt out adults, no in-between, coz God knows after 9h of work I aint looking for any edgy nihilism...but when I was in high school and college I was the prime audience for shows like JJK.

    1:05 and that's the issue right there, trying to use social media hype as any measure of success of a show that ive seen so many content creators do.
    Why are people still asking "what happened to MHA" The series is fine, the volume sales are consistent with a 7th anime season starting. Alot of people dont understand that social media curates content it shows you based on your interests. If you're not searching for mha content.
    Anyway, I think people need to realize that social media hype needs to stop being used as a measure of how popular an anime is.

      For years I’ve boiled down these things to “just because it makes money, it doesn’t mean it’s good”. I’m not saying it’s never the case, because quality obviously does bring interesting/success. But it’s undeniable there are “blockbuster franchises “ in entertainment media that are just not really that good or unique but bring in the money.
      -COD/Fifa on video games
      -F&F on movies
      -MHA on manga.
      There are cool things and the art is spectacular, yeah. But it just doesn’t feel like “that iconic great thing that defines a generation of fans”.
      I don’t think Midoriya will EVER be a memorable or fan favorite MC other than for the weird fanboy of the series. Hell, even then, I don’t think THE PROTAGONIST has scores #1 on the most popular charts in years now, has he?

    I can't get behind this take. I'm a casual anime fan but this is the only anime I care about. And I say that because anime sucks at relating to a western audience but My Hero Academia does a great job using a western genre. The dubs are amazing and vibrant. I think the color pallette take was not good. There is a reason why the DCEU movies have tanked in the last years, because a dark color pallette is not universally good for a genre that is best when it is sunken deep into hope and idealism. This is why Zack Snyder movies have flopped and Marvel movies during their peak soared because superheroes are meant to represent the bright parts of humanity. If you follow recent superhero news James Gunn released the latest picture of their Superman. The first thing people did was take the darkly colored picture and increase the brightness and color saturation. People are craving optimism in the superhero genre and with optimism comes the colors that epitomizes it. I feel like you missed season 6. This season was amazing and I would rank it in the top 3 seasons of the series. If no one is talking about it as much because the novelty that spurns conversation has largely worn off, but you don't get great sales and views if people are not enjoying it. Basic rule of capitalism numbers always tell the story. So if numbers (100 million) are high product is enjoyed of numbers are low people are not enjoying or that enjoyment is more niche. So every metric shows this series is widely enjoyed.

    I think part of the problem is also the way the animation quality is so unevenly distributed. There will be these long, long stretches of limited animation and dull cinematography, then a burst of sakuga for the main event fight scene, then back to the limited animation and dull cinematography. Part of why I love Jujutsu Kaisen S2 so much is that MAPPA really made an effort to not just dump all their animation efforts on the fight scenes, but on the character acting in the comedic and more dramatic scenes as well.
    When an anime only decides to really pick its feet up for the action scenes, it gives this feeling of cheapness. Not to say HeroAca is a cheap series to make, but that's the inescapable feeling you get. Either that or the feeling that the fight scenes were all that was deemed important, not the character moments that form the emotional stakes of the fight scenes.
    And honestly, I really hope BONES can turn it around for this last stretch of the story. It's got its ups and downs, but the high points of this final arc are my favorite in the story. The most emotionally and thematically satisfying, the most complex, and just the most visually interesting. The trailers and preview visuals we've gotten don't inspire much hope, but I'll try to hold out hope anyway.

You actually gave a good analysis, and while there was stuff I didn’t agree with, this analysis was pretty good. But you also have to consider that one of the reasons people don’t discuss MHA is because discussing the series has grown more difficult over the years due to the haters who keep hating on the story and everything in it and keep pushing their opinions onto others while claiming that they’re criticizing when they’re not. Oh, and by the way, since season 7 of MHA is out, what do you think of it so far? Personally, I think Bones is doing the adaptation justice.

    Something that you didn't touch on is that the MHA anime has abysmal pacing, especially for a seasonal show.
    The first episode of every season is almost always a filler episode reintroducing the cast of Class 1A. Every episode after that has to start by spending a few minutes reminding the audience about the existence of quirks and Deku's dream of becoming the "Namba wan hero".
    The anime also stretches out each training/license exam arc with several filler battles just to hit that 25 episode mark. Last but not least, there's usually an anime original episode at some point in the season to tie-in to the filler movie that's premiering that year. There's absolutely no reason why a seasonal show should have that much filler.

    I have a very similar outlook on MHA. It was one of the first anime I watched seasonally (beginning with season 2) and I liked it so much at the time. But like you said, the more time passed and the more I watched different anime, my opinion began to shift a little from "This anime is so great" to "it's pretty good" (if that makes sense), especially after the disappointment that was season 4 and the travesty of season 5. And when it got back to being really good at season 6, the hype was not there and many defaults remained (mainly as you said, censorship, less detailed scenes and characters, occasional fluid animation, "blue sky"...). That said, I still enjoy it enough to wait for the new season, which I hope will be great. Thanks for your video.

    While I can acknowledge that MHA is good at, I was always more interested in the original concept. Personally, I could never get to the Sports Festival - though that could be because my childhood had the Chunin Exams and I ended up subconsciously comparing the two.
    Anyway, from an animation perspective, Bones could've waited to build up hype and give their animators a marathon instead of a sprint to endure. In terms of the day battles, a sharp contrast with shadows and grey tones with a highlighting color could've done wonders to rack up the tension for certain scenes.

    Yk it’s a shame. Haters like this shouldn’t be able to profit off of Horikoshi’s good name.
    Should I make a video called “Why Kingdom Was Never Popular?” No b/c that would be a reach only a bozo like yourself would make.
    Note: I love how at this point MHA haters before they get to shitting on it have to acknowledge it’s unquestioned success. Then they expose themselves, and say something dumb:
    1. Horikoshi doesn’t owe Paul Feige or Marvel shit. He outsells comics in America 😂😂😂. MHA would sell 100m in the 90s, 00, 2020s, etc.
    2. Let me make this abundantly clear. THERE WAS A PANDEMIC IN 2020. Manga sales were inflated during this two year 2020-21 run. Gotouge and Gege benefited the most from this.
    3. You stating the same old tired anime takes makes me yawn. If anything you’re just proving how pretentious and fickle the anime community is. As if One Piece needed the animation improvement to be accepted into the community 😭😭😭. Do you really think Toei would continuously air a failing product for 800 episodes? It’s almost as if a lot of people were watching that “terrible product”.
    4. If you calculated half of the views from the cult of What happened to MHA videos on CZcams it would make Oshi No Ko’s opening look like child’s play (Shout out to Tk for the lit new anime opening). So I guess your poor think piece is good for business

    Unlike the others, it was season 5 that made MHA med, to me. More pacifically, My Villain Academia. I read the Manga before hand and it was amazing! The art, the story, the lore, the style, the fights, everything was perfect! Then the adaptation came and it was...not bad, but not good either...just...ok. It had 22 chapters and the anime had to remove, censer and skim through the entire chapters in only 5 episodes, with a pretty med animation. Not to mention, being told in unchronological order. WHILE they were all in the middle doing the third movie too. IT WAS A MESS! My Villain Academia didn't get the right adaptation that it deserved. To be fair, the show did redeem itself after season 6. Yes, it still had a few mishaps here and there, but overall, the season did win me over and hype for season 7. Although, I should be cautious. Season 6 turned out well because there was no movie in the way. Season 7 and a 4th movie is being made so.....yeah, I know they're going to put all those budgets into the film obviously. But I hope that doesn't distract them from adapting the Manga correctly. Am I happy about ANOTHER MHA film? I guess. But I rather they focus more on the source material. THAT is my biggest issue with the MHA adaptions. They are either censored, removed, skimmed through and givin a half ass animation at times just so they can focus more on the films. But who knows? Maybe and HOPEFULLY, My Hero will rise again. The Manga is still doing good though at least.

    Season 4 was Deku’s biggest personal victory: Defeating Overhaul and saving Eri. They also introduced an amazing song, “Hero Too”. I don’t think the series has lost its edge or appeal for me. The characters are all greatly written, their pacing is natural and the relationships are beautiful. No one gets ignored or lose importance/screen time for bull reasons. I think it’s a way more believable story and universe than what has become of One Piece. Everything since Gear 5 has sound like Oda has been just pulling out random gobbledygook than make logical sense. It’s gone on for so long that I’d rather watch shorter series.
    As for the “big impressive moments” of Gear 5 Luffy vs. Kaido didn’t get me invested I watching because I was fixated on where Izuku’s story was going. He’s been the best Shonen protagonist for me and I just love him too much to lose interest. Meanwhile, One Piece took too long getting to the Kaido story while constantly having Luffy botch up more than with Crocodile. The timeskip arcs also feel way too long and dragged out with the episodes. I also question why, after all that, Carrot DIDN’T join the crew or question what kept Yamato from joining despite all the buildup. But I never once lost that vibe with MHA or its reality. It has LOADS of potential for a sequel or side stories. They didn’t even rely on filler episodes.

    1. Deku is very shallow even among Shonen Protagonists who are known to be shallow to begin with. Luffy is silly. Tanjiro is wholesome. Naruto cares about his friends. Denji is an actual horny teenager. Deku has none of those going for him.
    2. They gave too much screentime to the villains. Villains are meant to have some sort of mysteriousness. But MHA gave a lot, too much backstory to the villains. This gave less time to Deku's progression which leads to my next point.
    3. Deku's growth is so weird. He struggled for so long with mastering MHA and yet once he got the other quirks, he really learned those too quick.
    It's just a really mid show and has no character.

    • @Ghozts2

But saying that Deku is shallow and has nothing going for him just means you haven't payed attention to the show at all. Especially since they show what Deku's main goal(main schtick) is.

      @@GlizzySan Uh huh. So hating on something in the comments sections of videos that neither the author nor the studio probably watch is supposed to make it better? But let me elaborate on what I meant. You see, I’m talking about the haters who are hating and attention-seeking honesty; either that or they’re just too afraid to say they like the series or both. Now I will admit there is some valid criticism, but the majority are people who contradict themselves when they "criticize" and even annoy people who think differently than them. A lot of MHA fans can’t enjoy the series in peace because of the constant hate, which is another reason why people don’t talk about it often. It’s because they don’t want to deal with the annoying haters. The best option is to either drop the series if you don’t like it or just stop complaining and bothering people. This way the people who don’t like it can watch something they genuinely like and people who enjoy it can enjoy it and express their love for the series without being constantly attacked by spoiled brats who get way too intense when the story doesn’t go the way they want and don’t respect other peoples opinions or the author of the series because some of those people insult Horikoshi now Like I said before, there are criticisms I consider valid, but most people I come across do what I just told you, so I’m saying that those people drop the series or stop complaining. The fact that MHA has been running for almost 10 years now in the manga (8 for the anime), the hype is mild. It's no longer the new Shonen Jump series on the block, and other Jump series are finally being adapated.

    I’ll also mention that the studio also switched up the arcs. I don’t know the reasoning as to why, but I think was also a factor as to why season 6 had a lot of complaints. I don’t read the manga so I’m unsure about what everyone was hyping up about the “Villain Academia” arc, but I’m starting to get a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out) so I’ll start reading to see what the excitement was about.
    [Bit of spoilers for S6]
    I also think Izuku’s arc in season 6 could have him suffer a bit more. Cruel, I know, but having it be longer, having him face each of AFO’s mini bosses that was sent his way like Lady Nagant, make new connections and perhaps lose those new connections somehow due to wanting to save him when he was at his weakest. Anything like DC’s Gotham City basically. Perhaps he loses contact with the pros after a battle early on and for the rest of it he’s considered missing. I don’t know, I just feel like horikoshi could have given us more to chew on and think about, especially since all of Deku’s development and experience were kind of thrown out the window the moment he returned to UA.

    • @striker07927
      @striker07927 Před 29 dny +3

      I’ll disagree only on the idea Deku’s development went on permanent pause, Deku’s development shifts from the idealistic dreamer, to a realist revolutionist after this arc and perhaps spoilers for the manga moving forward, Deku has made very passionate declarations of realizations of what he thinks the world truly is, how it degraded itself and why those left in the dark seem so monstrous, Deku has changed from the 14 year old boy who saw heroes as the pinnacle and unfallible in every sense of the word, to seeing the inner conflicts and workings along the way not only from the Pro’s but from the Villains, this causes Deku to declare he wants to tear the old world down and create a new one which treats everyone fairly, the world which broke many people and caused them to do horrendous things both outwardly onto innocents or in secret behind closed doors, Deku is the one who doesn’t promise security like All Might did which the people wanted, but promises something better, something that allows as minimal amount of people to suffer, and save whoever he can.

    • @t.j.1584
      @t.j.1584 Před 10 dny

      Like you said, it’s cruel. But I agree that Izuku could’ve suffered a little more in that arc. One thing I would’ve liked to see, is Gran Torino actually dying after the war arc and Deku not being able to process that grief of losing one of his mentors and just jumping right back into trying to find Shigaraki and AFO seeing how that affects his mindset, it explains more of why he pushes others away and not wanting them to get hurt, possibly taking that grief and anger out on AFO’s assassins (besides Lady Nagant) and with Shigaraki killing one of his mentors, how does that make Deku have inner conflict with his own ideals of if he should kill him or try to save him, especially since he believes OFA is a power meant for saving. It would also add more to Class 1-A’s reasons to bring Deku back to U.A, Class 1-A could clearly see that Deku’s hurting and hasn’t processed that grief of losing someone, so they want to be there for him to process that grief together since they lost Midnight and know exactly what Deku’s feeling. Although I disagree that all of his development was tossed out the window when he joined up with Class 1-A again. The other guy already explained all of that.

    I remember how pumped I was to see Deku vs Shigaraki in season 6. In manga that fight was just awesome. I was visible there, that Deku is using his full power and reader just felt the power and struggle. When I was watching that it was like... meeh. Only One or two moments kicked more (float moment because of music and "thats what this power is for") but rest was just medium. Animation was mediocre, music was ok but not awesome. I think we just would like to have that show done better, because source material is great.

    Imo my hero as a series was severely outcompeted. It came out at a time where it was relatively unchallenged and people hyped it up. Then once competition came in, it quickly showed just how behind it was. The fights? Barely engaging outside of the occasional emotional moment. The story telling? Initially promising but that promise was never fully delivered on except at a few points. The art? Admittedly amazing in the manga but the anime’s production is notoriously pretty bland. In the beginning I was with the show, believed in its hype and promise, but as time goes on the story feels increasingly like literary junk food, especially when you have powerhouses like CSM or JJK as your competitors.

      @thecod2345 Před měsícem +2

      @@itsjustsuna Admittedly literary junk food is probably a bit harsh. However, I do stand by that mha was simply outclasses in all the ways that matter. Even if we look side by side with jjk, firstly the fights in jjk are just flatly better, from choreography to power systems even if you remove any emotional impact jjk’s have the fights are almost always premium stuff while MHA’s fights are bland on average. But even story wise, while jjk has its faults it’s also managed to create a story with interesting characters, fun dynamics, believable flaws, and a lot of tension. Mha has more or less stilted characters, dynamics that feel like archetypes talking, nonexistent side characters, nonexistent tension, and conflicts that are just.. not enough. It feels like Horikoshi forgot why certain characters worked and went on autopilot through a lot of the story which is also paced glacially and rushed simultaneously. Where Gege is often a bit too eager to pull one over on the audience, Horikoshi seems deathly allergic to make the audience feel anything. I mean Deku’s dark arc is literally just him doing hero work by himself and overworking himself. There’s just a consistent refusal to commit to real tension or change within the story outside of the obligatory mentor dies/stops being all that useful.
      Granted, jjk is elevated very highly by its adaptation and mha is done dirty by bones, but at the end of the day even if they had adaptations of equal quality, I’d still wager mha would be in a tricky spot because of its storytelling. To put it like this, jjk for all its flaws often can make me care or get invested in a character in a shockingly short amount of time, while mha will struggle to get close to that for a character actively involved in 2 seasons worth of manga content. Gege, for all his flaws, knows how to create compelling human drama and ground characters in a way that very efficiently gets you to care and be interested. Mha will create surface level motivations and some backstory but won’t take that final step to fully humanize the character.
