    I found your channel after using one of your books on Disraeli as a secondary source for a paper I wrote a few years ago. While you may think nobody reads your books, your research helped me get a history degree and I thank you for it.

      Luke you are very kind to say that. I am delighted that my Disraeli book gave you some assistance to your degree - and hope your degree has helped you move on to something good now.

    As always speaking words of wisdom. Can honestly say that you were by far the most impactful teacher I've had across all forms of education and left me with a deep love of the subject. Was contemplating this very topic of "when will it be enough" a few weeks back and so it feels incredibly precient that you post this today. In the end, it is all vanity
    Loving the channel -- looking forward to the next post.

      How very kind of you to say that. It's very good to know that you have been inspired to carry on studying and find personal satisfaction in doing so. That is the absolute key to being content in the world so I'm glad you have found that place. And I'm very pleased that this talk struck a chord with you. If it helps you get sense of perspective on things then it has served its purpose. It sounds like you are definitely progressing in many ways.

    Goals are not bad in themselves. Achieving them does bring rewards. However one cannot "succeed" in every goal. Valuing the process is as important if not more so. But as a society we are not so good at that. We are too judgemental and, as you say, narrowly focused on the outcomes alone.
    Thank you for your wisdom. Hopefully more can learn to be content with their fate and that of others.

    • @stjohnspipecasts6801
      @stjohnspipecasts6801  Před 2 lety +3

      Thank you for your helpful reflections. Yes one must have some goals but its important not to allow the goal to displace the process - the journey is usually at least as rewarding as the point of arrival.

    Many heartfelt thanks, Sir, you speak to my condition ! Quite frankly, if you expanded this to a book (preferably a concise booklet), it would be the most important contribution to the philosophy of life since Epictetus' Enchiridion !

    Your remarks reminded me of the Koine Greek word ἁμαρτία, or “to miss the mark” as in archery. The term was translated as “sin” in the N.T., and provides some insight into what failure ( or sin) truly is, that being “ missing the mark”. What do we do when we miss our mark? Simply learn from our failure and give it another try.
