Love the idea of a Rosewood SJ-200 but I've never found one that sounds better than the average Maple

Which is crazy because most Maple J200s are tonally lackluster. I’ve maybe played 20-25 where two were remarkable. J185s more consistent

@@CenterThePendulum I recently got a new Epiphone SJ-200 and it's the best guitar I ever owned. Better than Adirondack, rosewood etc.
I think it's mostly torrefied top, but I believe maple gives it something special.
I've heard A LOT of mediocre Gibson jumbos on CZcams.

I bought my SJ200, Studio at Music Villa in 2012. It is still a great sound.

Well now I’m conflicted . I was almost on the phone with my credit card and then you demo’d the SJ200 with a maple back and sides. I never in a million years would have thought you could produce that tone out of a guitar with maple back and sides. Then what do I know? Both beautiful sounding guitars. Quinton, I could listen to you play all day man.

I’m not a fan of those big guitars but this sounds huge! The rosewood model. I like this non bling approach a lot.
But then I’m a working man.

I think the acoustic guitar builders are finally catching on that flat or satin finish sounds and projects better that a gloss finish. I can tell the difference on an iPad speaker. That’s a very nice sounding guitar. Rosewood tends to have less mid range response with more high and low end. Great for vocals since the voice is a mid range instrument.

      Still, violins are rather glossy.
In my experience satin IN GENERAL is better. However, it sometimes gives guitars tobe that's a bit too harsh.

Yes, as a singer-songwriter my rosewood Takamine with cedar top fits me well. Although I love the maple attack in general

    Thanks again Music Villa.
I have a maple J200 Studio and found mine to be considerably superior in tone to a Standard J200 I once owned. Obviously, the Standard will always win regards looks, but what I would say is never ever estimate a guitar by looks alone.
Tone being entirely subjective, I'm not sure if this rosewood Studio does it for me. It will for some and that's great, but I found the bass, mids and trebles to be unbalanced, at least in this recording. The powerful bass of this instrument somewhat over-riding the mids and the (comparatively weak) trebles. Rosewood definitely has the punch, but sometimes I find the tone can be brittle and displeasing. Humidity and wood mass also a factor with these big guns.

Nice sounding SJ 200. What is a "utile" neck profile? Thanks Quinton and Paul
