Some genera include species found in marine, brackish, and freshwater environments (e.g., Strongylura), while a few genera are confined to freshwater rivers and streams, including Belonion, Potamorrhaphis, and Xenentodon. Needlefish closely resemble North American freshwater gars (family Lepisosteidae) in being elongated and having long, narrow jaws filled with sharp teeth, and some species of needlefishes are referred to as gars or garfish despite being only distantly related to the true gars. In fact, the name "garfish" was originally used for the needlefish Belone belone in Europe and only later applied to the North American fishes by European settlers during the 18th century.
Needlefish are slender, ranging from 3.0 to 95 cm (1.2 to 37.4 in) in length. They have a single dorsal fin, placed far back on the body, almost opposite to the anal fin. Their most distinctive feature is their long, narrow beak, which bears multiple sharp teeth. In most species, the upper jaw reaches its full length only in adults, so the juveniles have a half-beak appearance, with an elongated lower jaw, but a much smaller upper one. During this stage of their lifecycle, they eat plankton, switching to fish once the beak fully develops. Needlefish reproduce through mating and laying eggs. The male usually rides the female on the waves as they mate.

Hindi na po yata marami ang isda diyan sa Mansalay Oriental Mindoro na malalapit sa dalampasigan baka po over fishing na kasi yung Balo o niddle fish ay malilit pa ay parang 1 o 2 piraso na lang po yung malalaki o good size. Ang mga balo po ay marami silang nagsasama sama tulad din ng mga tuna at iba pang uri ng isda. Kailangan na po siguro ding tulungan ng BFAR ang mga marginalized fisherfolks na mabigyan ng tulong o assistance tulad ng mas malalaking Banka o lantsa para sa malayo o sa laot na namamalakaya. At kailangan lang po ay may mas modern machine ng fishing boats, navigation equipment, radio at sonar radar pang tracking or tracing kung nasasaan yung location o lugar ng mga malalaking isda at kawan (school of fish)nila para doon sila lambatin o kaya ay banwitin. Kailangan na po talaga ring mag-modernized na tayo ng pamamaraan ng pangingisda dahil talo na tayo ng Vietnam dahil hindi na sila gumagamit gaano ng baruto o maliliit na bangka! Hahahahaha 😂😂😂 Hahahahaha! Joke lang po! Kailangan din po na i-train din ang ating mga mangingisda kung paanu ang pagpiloto o pagpapatakbo ng mga lantsa, maintenance at pag-aayos ng makina ng fishing boats, training at seminars, financial assistance at siyempre storage facility para sa mahuhuling maraming isda.
