Welcome to Beverly Hills! I loved this movie and had a BLAST with Eddie Murphy and company as they solved the murder case! The cast really did elevate this movie from a B tier cop film to a hilarious comedy! Will probably watch the second but don't know about the third.
Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

As others have said, that music piece is called Axel F. It is Axel's theme so it comes in whenever he is about to do something noteworthy to the story. In many movies there are musical themes attached to certain characters that play when they are on screen. In Star Wars several characters have theme music, the most obvious is Darth Vader's theme.

This has a great soundtrack in general, but Axel F was my favourite tune for about a year back in the day and I still love it. Other notable examples of recurring music themes that are also by Harold Faltermeyer are Fletch's Theme and Top Gun Anthem, both great pieces of music (and great movies).

In 1984 I was working for a radio industry tip sheet called The Friday Morning Quarterback. When this movie came out, it produced a number of hits from the soundtrack. Harold Faltermeyer was the music director and wrote "Axel F -- Axel's Theme" specifically for the movie. Subsequently, it, along with several songs on the soundtrack, became hits across several radio formats --- Album Oriented Rock, Top 40, Adult Contemporary and R & B. I was a data transcriber at The FMQB -- I talked to Music and Program Directors from radio stations across North America who reported to us their play lists, often giving a quote on certain songs that they liked and what we were tracking for our own Top 40 list (Similar to Billboard Magazine).
"Axel F" placed #1 on the Billboard Charts in June, 1985. Other songs from this soundtrack that charted that year included:
"New Attitude" -- Patti LaBelle at #17
    "Neutron Dance" -- Pointer Sisters #6, #13 R & B, #23 Adult Contemporary
"The Heat is On" -- Glenn Frey (who was a founding member of the classic rock group, The Eagles), #2, #4 AOR, #36 Adult Contemporary
The Soundtrack Album placed #1 on the US Billboard Album charts in 1985 and won a Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack in 1986.

BTW, the song you kept hearing was "Axel F". Harold Faltermeyer did the score, and he composed that bit to be Axel's theme. When the movie became a smash hit, "Axel F" got released as a single. It's one of the most successful instrumental tracks of all time.
Side note: it was covered by Crazy Frog, but that version royally sucked. Just listen to Harold Faltermeyer's original version.

Fun Fact: Eddie Murphy, John Ashton, and Judge Reinhold improvised most of their comic lines. Literally hundreds of takes were ruined by cast members, actors, or the director laughing during shooting. During the "super-cops" monologue, Ashton is pinching his face hard and looking down in apparent frustration. He is actually laughing. Reinhold put his hand in his pocket and pinched his thigh really hard, trying to prevent himself from laughing.
Projection Headline Fact: During his tirade at the Beverly Palms Hotel, Axel (Eddie Murphy) pretends to be writing an article called "Michael Jackson: Sitting On Top Of The World" for Rolling Stone magazine. In real life, Playboy ran an Eddie Murphy article with the same "Sitting On Top Of The World" subtitle.
Double Assault Fact: The mansion used in the final shootout between Axel (Eddie Murphy) and Maitland (Steven Berkoff), the former Harold Lloyd estate in Beverly Hills, is the same mansion seen in the final shootout between Matrix and Arius in Commando (1985). Coincidentally, both heroes were trying to rescue somebody named Jenny in that mansion in their respective films.

My brother just had a similar experience in real life, when Eddie checks in to that luxury hotel. He was on a business trip to California, and his boss had taken the initiative to book him into this really fancy five star hotel (cost something like $3500 for just few days) in a similar location. The suite was nice and all, but all the restaurants and shops in that area were way beyond his price range, so he literally could not do anything there, but use his room for sleeping.

Yes, the main theme was composed for the movie. It was also the first music made into a sound file to be played on a computer. It's a bit of forgotten computer history. Not for a game though. Just to show you could play music on a computer and not just music made on a computer. In the same vein someone created the mask of Tutanchamun into a picture file. We are talking about the Commodore 64 home computer which came out in 1982. That said, the main theme is titled 'Axel F.' by Harold Faltermeyer.

If you look in to the making of the movie, you'll find that the feeling you got from it, cop thriller action comedy that just sorta has funny parts organically, is because it started out not being much of a comedy. When Murphy got attached, it started getting some comedy.

the banana guy is played by Damon Wayans

Serge is played by Bronson Pinchot who also played the role of Balki in the sit-com Perfect Strangers. He used the same odd indistinct accent .

Beverly Hills Cop 2 is just as good. And 3 has less vulgar language. Also, it was Damon Waynes who gave Eddie Murphy the bananas.

Many 80s movies was rated R or 18 before two things happened….the world became more tolerant in certain countries to bad language….and second movie companies wanted to maximise revenue and widen the audience so some movies were toned down a bit to suit the new 15 rating in the UK. Don’t know the USA equivalent if there is one

Good movie, and I think the sequel is even better.
Should watch *48 Hours,* Eddie Murphy's first movie, kind of a buddy "cop" movie, but different than this, not a comedy.

Probably Murphy's greatest film -- just a perfect vehicle for his style of comedy.
The second movie is not quite as good but still worth a watch. It's just that the comedy starts to feel more forced, and it's more of an action film with less of Foley's clever investigative work.
The third film is... not very good. It's a poor man's Die Hard, and Murphy just looks bored through most of it.

Cool reaction. Beverly Hills Cop is one of my all-time favorite Eddie Murphy films. I'm in the minority on this though, but I love the third movie too. I don't care, I'll say it. lol I love all 3 movies, so they don't bother me at all. Not even 3. I have all 3 movies on dvd, and I don't see what was wrong with it nor do I care to see what's really wrong with it, but you're more than welcome to skip 3 if you want. Also, the theme song "Axel F" was originally written by the film's composer Harold Faltermeyer (he also did Top Gun, Tango & Cash, The Running Man, and Fletch). Pretty iconic song that appears in all 3 movies. Not to mention, it was unfortunately ruined by Crazy Frog whose version I regret listening to first before growing up and watching the films. Way to ruin a classic. Beverly Hills Cop's instrumental soundtrack (plus the second movie's soundtrack) is also one of my absolute favorite Faltermeyer soundtracks, too. So yeah, he did it first and it became a hit. Can't wait to see your reaction to the second movie soon, and I hope you learned something today!

Beverly Hills Cop II is great. It’s actually my favorite of the series. Cop III is notoriously terrible. You will get to see Serge again, but that’s about all I can say for it.

Great movie. Eddie Murphy was at his best in the 80s . You can skip the third one it is horrible but the second one is pretty great like the first one. Another great 80's movie of Eddie Murphy is the Golden Child. Fun Fact The movie was suppose to star Sylvester Stallone and he wanted to be darker but in the end Eddie Murphy took the role in the movie was made lighter. Sylvester Stallone took his movie ideas and created the action movie Cobra so you can check out this movie also and compare :) .
