Geoffrey Arnold Beck (24 June 1944 - 10 January 2023) was an English guitarist. He rose to prominence as a member of the rock band the Yardbirds, and afterwards founded and fronted the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. In 1975, he switched to an instrumental style with focus on an innovative sound, and his releases spanned genres and styles ranging from blues rock, hard rock, jazz fusion and a blend of guitar-rock and electronica.
    ABOUT
In the mid-seventies guitarist Jeff Beck released Blow by Blow and Wired, two albums that are considered the best and most successful instrumental fusion albums ever. But also before and after these milestones this master guitarist had - and still has - a striking career. We first learned about the now 61-year-old Beck back in the beginning of the sixties, when he replaced Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds. A few years later he started his Jeff Beck Group, featuring a/o Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, and he laid out the fundaments of a style that, later, was to be called heavy metal. The fact that Beck often interrupted his career in the following years has everything to do with his adoration for fast cars. He loves being in the garage under a Corvette just as much as being in the studio or on stage with a guitar. And it’s on stage where he manages to draw the strangest sounds from his instrument and usually he does that with out any sound processing pedals. He once said in an interview: “I love it when people come and listen to my music and can’t seem to figure out which instrument I am playing.” Jeff Beck is definitely one of the big names of the impressive fusion program North Sea Jazz presents this year. Drummer Vinnie Colaiuta is a musician with the same reputation. He can be heard on the albums of Sting, Zappa and Joni Mitchell and he sets an example for many drummers.

This was a long time ago when we were all 13 and Jeff was 14 years old at Sutton East Secondary School, in Sutton Surrey, years ago, in 1958-9. Jeff Beck had appeared in class after we were told that we were to expect a new pupil in the class. One of the reasons why Jeff was so good at guitar in the future , was because he had to be so determined to keep going and try to make a guitar and get sounds out of it at all costs, and was that when he was a teenager, and did not own a guitar, and he tried to make his own. He was desperate to make notes, somehow, with what ever he had and tried hard to make his own, and to make sounds of some kind. He came to our class when he was 14 and we were 13 years old, for the second time. It was in the break before the lessons in the afternoon, and we were allowed in before the Bell went because we were in Art One, - special classes that were different from other classes and were supposed to give us more access to Art. The school was covered in giant oil paintings made by the older Art Pupils. Jeff was fond of drawing cars, and we were in the class below the oil painter class. We looked up to him because he was a year older. One day he came in and had with him a load of bits of wood and short wires which were covered in insulating cloth tape, woven around each of them. He went straight to the back of the room and sat inside the teachers store room on the floor. The boys who were at the back of the room knew him the best and they relayed to the message that Jeff was trying to make a guitar! I thought to myself, "No way will he be able to make any note with short wires like that!" I was taught piano by my concert playing mother and I did not know then that Jeff Beck's mother was also a trained concert pianist and taught Jeff the piano. After a while we heard a few notes coming from the store room, but he could not have made them! In the late 1950s we still did not have miniature radios, activated by batteries, so I do not know how we heard those sounds! The bell went, and he came out and sat in his place. When we hear and see him in recordings at Ronnie Scott, he often makes notes that are very difficult to make, very high up or very low, because of this struggle to dare to make them when he was trying to make a guitar for himself. This is explained by some specialist people who know about guitar playing, on CZcams! Notes that can very easily go wrong, because on a stringed instrument, some notes are almost impossible to make. However he always tried to do the impossible, having gone through the difficulties of trying to make his own guitars when he was young. I understand this, and his longing to open up the piano to expose the wires inside, which Jeff admitted he preferred strumming, because I loved to do this too, to try a different way of making sound. What Jeff Beck had was an extreme determination, which he also had much later, when he owned classic cars which he maintained, and even made an Album with car noises i them! To be able the play better and also to invent new ways of playing and becoming even better at playing, one has to have a sort of crazy yearning which make one practise over and over again in order to conquer and master a certain way of playing. This was what Jeff Beck accomplished. He could play many different genres like his friend Jimmy Page, but his path was different, and he would never promote himself. Cynthia Allen-McLaglen
