Lil' Samsung Nugget (that might not actually be a nugget)

  • Samsung YP-U3 2GB MP3 player. I've had this thing for donkeys years and probably haven't used it in 10 years and here it is still holding a charge and sounding great! I like the OLED display but hate those touch sensitive buttons. I forgot it had FM radio that's a nice bonus! Also out of the box it required proprietary Samsung software to Sync music to but after a Firmware upgrade with the Korean market software it acts as a mass storage device! Apparently they thought Americans were too dumb to use it this way OR perhaps more likely that Koreans wouldn't stand for proprietary software? Either way it's almost a must do mod to make this thing worthwhile. That is if anyone still cares today...

Everything is a nugget. Dank Pods has said as much.
You cannot question the screamy Australian man.

Ah the evolution of MP3 players, used to be so impressed by any dedicated device to play them.

I love old technology like this. Things that have been pushed out by smartphones. I recently brought back my good ol' Canon digital camera. It's sweet, and yeah, I also have a fancy mp3 player from back in the early 2000's :D

I have a Pixel 6a as my phone, and the 2 best USBC to 3.5mm adapters I've found have been the official one from Google, and the Walmart ONN branded ones that has a really good DAC that can drive some higher powered cans at a decent volume, & I've never had them flake out on me.
Also I have a perfect condition Sansa C240 Mp3 Player I'd love to mod with RockBox for all the file formats it can handle, but sadly I can't find a new battery for it at any price, so I just use my phone.

I had a MuVo MP3 player back in the day. You could pull it apart and half of it was a flash drive and the other half was the part that held the battery.

I refuse to buy a phone that lacks a headphone jack. Did it once... Never again! Nevertheless, I'm considering picking up something like this too for running. I especially like FM radio access.

I wonder what made them use proprietary software for the western markets. Is there a store option built into the software where you could purchase or stream music? The functionality would most likely be bunk today, but back then having an integrated all-in-one music platform gave Apple a leg up. I doubt anyone could have overcome their lead as "the" music player though.

I don't think it had a store on anything it was very basic. I always figured they either thought that we in NA were too dumb to understand without software that holds our hand OR the flip side is that the Asian market just wouldn't stand for crappy required software!

@@MN12BIRD I'm pretty old school / high nerd who doesn't like installing unnecessary software and even prefer "portable" versions which don't require installs. I still don't understand their reasoning since installing software and using it would require the user to read a manual to figure out how to get songs on / off the device. I'd sold some of these music-only players in the past and they sell surprisingly well despite the lack of space. I guess people still do want the simplicity of these devices.
