  • Here is the Dell 7220 that I use for automotive. It’s thier rugged tablet and is a fantastic option when using it in the shop. Functions like a surface pro but heavy duty.

    I’m on my third dell rugged. I have a 5414 i5 which was absolutely amazing, a 5420 i7 which was smaller, lighter and more powerful, but the keyboard wasn’t nearly as rugged. And I just got a 7220 now that the price dropped with the release of the 7230. I picked all of them up second hand with small issues for a fraction of the price and fixed them. The 5414 I paid $300, the 5420 $600 and the 7220 for $400. The 5414 had water intrusion on a swappable IO board, that was a $15 fix. The 5420 was incorrectly configured with drivers, that was free and the 7220 needed a USB socket changed. These units a the best rugged products I have had. Dell doesn’t a phenomenal job keeping drivers big free. Which as someone that works in the automotive repair and customization as well as heavy equipment and heavy truck focusing primarily on electronic control systems and programming. You cannot underestimate good drivers. You automotive only guys may not see such a big difference but I assure you having good solid drivers and a RS232 on board too is life changing.

      That’s awesome really good prices. I cannot find any connection for the RS 232 do you have a link for any of them? HDMI and USB etc. I cannot find anything to plug into it. I’ll have to check out the 7230.

      Man I hate my 7220. The Ikey keyboard for 400-500 dollars is the worst keyboard I have used. Touchpad is junk. keyboard locking tabs that hold the tablet to it just broke after 6 months of use and they are metal. I would of gotten dell keyboard, but I wanted the ikey to make the table into a laptop when needed and not have to use the kickstand on the tablet. A lot easier sitting it on your lap. For 400.00 the ikey should come with at least 1-2 usb ports and the ability to charge the laptop through the keyboard. The Touch screen has weird issues( I'll touch the middle of the screen and it registers the left side of the screen(Have to put it into sleep mode and wake it back up in order to fix it constantly). I have dual batteries and they absolutely do not last all day. 4 hours max on one charge when actually using the tablet(Yes I got them from dell). Performance is mediocre at best. My old i5 cheap laptop that was 2 generation older performed better than this thing. In a last ditch effort. I got the i7 with 16GB of ram motherboard and the newest model Samsung pro 1TB. going to do a full wipe and see if a fresh install of windows, drivers and software will fix my problem.
      I got lucky and got to use the Panasonic CF-33 from a buddy of mine with their premium keyboard with a couple generation i5. It worked awesome. That will be the next laptop I will buy more than likely for programing and OEM diagnostic work, to replace my old Lenovo T1440p. If the Dell can't be save I'll also get that replaced with the CF-33.
      At the end of the day though. If you are happy with you dell products hats off to you.

      @@phillipzan2005 I don't use the keyboard for the 7220, its a secondary too my 5420. I use the Windows 11 onscreen keyboard (taskbar one not the pop-up) and it works good enough to right this reply swipe typing. I would see what your power settings are and see what is consuming your battery power, I don't personally have any issue with power consumption. I've never had a power issue with proper settings that I had to swap the battery on the 7220. My touch screen hasn't had any issues either maybe you need to do a calibration. I use the pen a lot because my fingers are big and rough. I use SK Hynix SSD because they are very power efficient but probably not more then a percent or two then Samsung. The CF-33 is a great laptop as well I just went this route over that is all. My 5420 goes through battery pretty good, but I have it cranked up because I run multiple tasks from it. The 7220 is just used its more coinvent, like data logging or quick issues with diagnostics. It's easier to grab, the screen size jut limits larger tasks.

      @@everytoolashammer9427 the reason I got the 7220 was to replace my 15. Which again worked great. But it wasn't rugged, so putting it on say an engine bay was not a good thing. When you are in the driver seat of a car, it is cumbersome. The 7220 digital keyboard is okay. Not great, but not terrible. But I type way faster with a keyboard. Now my ikey keyboard is not a Dell problem. I did forget to put that in my rant. It's a ikey money grab problem. Other than the fact the touch pad sucks ass And it is way too expensive for what you get. It does the job of making it into an actual laptop. The other thing I use tablet for is to run my business in the field and for a couple diagnostic programs. Plus information on what I'm working on. Which the field work is probably not surprising to you. Reality is if the upgrade I'm about to do this weekend fixes some of the problems I have I may need to buy 2 batteries and a charger. If not it's time to move on.

    I know it’s been two years but are you still using the 7220? Have you used it for programming? I’m thinking about upgrading my rugged laptops to rugged tablets.

      @weldingjunkie  Před 9 měsíci +1

      They are great make sure you get at least a 16gb ram for programming. The 8gb used to be enough but not any more. The Panasonic are good as well but I prefer the dell it’s great for diag too.

    Now you have to figure out a way to mount the e-scope on the back of it and that would be awesome 👍

      LOL I have a way with where the usb module screws in using a 3D printed plate but I like it seperate. After having the escope I like leaving the scope at the hood and moving tablet with me

      No. I’ve tried other CZcams videos and they’re working fine. I’ve tried watching this on wifi and cellular but it just keeps saying something went wrong.
      I’ll try on my pc when I get home.

    hey im thinkning of getting the 7212 with 16gb RAM and 1TB. i want to get it for module programming and ADAS calibrations.. pretty much for using OE softwares on it. do you still use it to this day and is it still working fine ? would you recomend it for what i want to use it for ? and is the extra $ for the keyboard worth it ?

    • @weldingjunkie

      Hey Mario, I do but I use the 7220 now. go for that one instead it has USB-C and USB on it. Keyboard is worth money the money in gold. Get the ikey hard one tho not the soft one. Especially if you’re gonna be doing programming.
