I had this test done today... If you're worried or have anxiety about it, don't! I'm pretty anxious when it comes to anything health / Doctor related and once again, with a lot of my procedures, tests, etc., it was a piece of cake. I would have to say the most annoying part of the test is the "deep breath in, exhale hard until your lungs are emptied and keep trying to empty them while they're already empty for five seconds" portion. It could lead to some light headed-ness, but just tell the Nurse and she'll give you a break. Don't worry about getting this done! :)

I have anxiety and was so scared of getting this done but it was a piece of cake.. after watching this, I’m wondering how accurate my results are. My mouth was on the tube halfway down, clamped shut though and I never had to breath shallowly quickly 🤔 .. never got dizzy even inhaling as much as I could in one breath or exhaling forcefully.. however my last test called a DCLO test with nitrogen had me leaving the place very disoriented for some reason, it as very odd. I’m guessing testing places are all different 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it was not the nightmare I thought it would be.

@@cza8294 Hi. They went well. I did not get covid from them or pick up any other illness. The tech assured me that all were cleaned out very well and the pieces that I had directly in my mouth were all disposable so they change for every patient, every time. She said they also allow, I think she said 30 min. between each test so they can disinfect the room, have it air out etc. The tests themself were fine. There are many of them and they take a long time but they instruct you throughout, they don't hurt etc, and in a way, they are kind of fun because they put your lungs to the challenge! Although I have thought I had asthma for years, my tests showed, I don't have asthma. We think now I might be having an aspiration problems where my swallowing has issues and contents from my mouth is getting into my lungs. It was good to do the tests though to eliminate asthma and get me off all my asthma meds (which I think were creating other problems for me like GERD) and it's good to know that on the whole my lungs are healthy and have no direct issues (e.g. like lung cancer) but that my problems are stemming from a different source, even though they are getting into my airways. So, try not to worry about your test. It's good you're having it done. You can always call the lab ahead of time, express your concerns of cleanliness during this pandemic, and ask exactly HOW and what they do to assure the equipment is clean. That should bring you some peace of mind. Dress warmly or in layers so you can be comfy. The room was a bit chilly. And just enjoy the experience. It will be good to know more about your lung function and health afterward. Good luck! and let me know how you did, if you'd like to share 😁 👍🏽

Also, my pulmonologist ordered a blood test for that same test day - to see the level of oxygen in my blood. I don't think that's standard but yours may order it too. If I didn't want to do it, the tech said I didn't have to. I agreed to do it as it would provide more info. For that, she gave me a small injection of Lidocane - a numbing drug in my wrist - then drew some blood. It didn't hurt but my wrist, hand, and thumb, and fingers stayed numb and funny feeling throughout the test and even a couple of more hours later, but all resolved fine later on. No big deal. Again, good luck! I hope all goes well for you and you find the cause of your troubles and can resolve them 👍🏽 😁

Pulmonologists use the test to measure the capacity of your lungs. Everyone’s lungs are different, so your test administrator will use multiple factors (age, weight, gender, race, etc.) to develop reference numbers and identify an appropriate range based on your characteristics. Ideally, a normal range is 70-80% or above your predicted reference number. Please follow up with your pulmonologist to receive your official results.

It means abnormal results from pft. It usually means that you may have chest or lung disease. Some lung diseases (such as emphysema, asthma and infections) can make the lungs function abnormal for example, lungs can help in breathing but not as a healthy person well and smoothly.

Test administrators ask each patient to try their best when completing the test. The machine requires a six-second standard to receive a test reading. Suppose a patient fails a test due to the machine’s inability to capture an accurate reading. In that case, the patient will need to work with the test administrator regarding proper breath technique.
If a patient failed because their test results were low, we would encourage them to work with their doctor directly.

If they tell me I have to continue to, I'll tell them I won't. Plain & simple. It's very obvious that people who are going in for these tests are having Pulmonary problems, and the test probably measures what a normal breathing should look like. @@alouise3557 Hi! my test went better than I thought it would. It really wasn't that bad. I had one years ago that left me feeling faint and completely breathless so that is why I was afraid. I don't know why this recent test seemed shorter and easier. It helped that the folks there were really nice. I explained to them ahead of time that I was really short of breath that day and expressed my concerns to them. I think that really helped me as well

It is true that breathing through the nose offers many benefits, including humidification of inhaled air, filtering of dust and other particles, and improved oxygen consumption. However, when we are performing a pulmonary function test, it is better to breathe through the mouth. This is because we are testing maximum lung capacities and force - both of which are much easier to achieve through the mouth. We also need a tight seal for the tests, which is easier to achieve using a mouthpiece.
