  • Adding a new hydraulic thumb to the mini ex. This is an AGT industrial mini excavator. 13 1/2 horse Briggs & Stratton engine. It’s a great little machine, especially for new Farmsteads. Or just small property owners.

      Does anyone know of a link to a thumb that has the extra larger fittings included? I'm buying an FF12 and I believe its just like this QH12 in that it has larger hydraulic lines+fittings. This thumb in the video was likely made for an H12, which I think might have smaller hydraulic lines+fittings. If anyone can provide a link to a thumb with the larger fittings included that would be awesome!

    On to the Bucket. I carry 8' to 10', 10" diameter logs around for cutting and splitting into firewood.
    Get rid of the WINGS on the Bucket! They don't hold a log even with the hydraulic thumb. Take them off.
    Also digs better without them.

    HE DID GOOD. very helpful video. i got the thumb but my excavator from China was different . it has only one point to connect thumb (his frame has two pieces with three holes welded). i ended fabricating to pieces and welding them into the frame . it worked and i am very happy. My hoses came with the adapters already. i recommend buying the thumb and make whatever adaptation is required. Is better than buying a CAT unit or similar for a lot of money.

    Congratulations, looking at the view count it looks like "the algorithm" picked this one up an showed it to a bunch of new people, including me :)
    Looks like a great addition to the mini excavator! I think it would be wise to install some bushings though, the connection from the thumb to the boom is VERY loose, both pin size and side to side movement. The holes and pin will wear out in no time at all like this. A grease fitting probably wouldn't hurt either.
    Some hints to improve your videos:
    - Volume control / normalization. I kept changing the volume throughout the video. Lower it when the machine ran, up again when you were talking, down again when the machine ran, way down at the bit you sped up. It's a bit more work for you to set the volume of the individual clips (or even parts of clips), but it makes watching (and especially hearing) these videos much more enjoyable :) For instance, the transition at 1:10 goes from an ok level of motor noise to VERY LOUD motor noise. At 3:20 it's the other way around, removing the packaging sounds a lot louder than your voice.
    - Perhaps a separate mic for your voice? Especially handy when the camera and its mic are pointing away from you.

      @diywithcookiepops2193  Před rokem +1

      Wow…. Thanks for all the advice. I will definitely try these things in future videos. I really appreciate it. Also I put some collars around the main pin too hopefully help with the side to side movement. And some grease. We’ll see how it goes. Thanks again.

But that makes them no money! I normally cut it off myself and take it to them. 2 other things looks like you need to put some spacers on the bottom pivot point where the thumb mounts to the stick you don't want the thumb to move side to side and hope you checked your hydraulic fluid after you worked iy a few time. Looks pretty good.

    Subscribed. I have a similar machine and also had an issue with finding the right F-F fittings. I ended up welding two M-F fittings back to back to get the F-F gender. Looks ugly, but works! I also find that the pilot controls are very sensitive and unless I am very slow and deliberate with moving the joysticks, it causes the boom/bucket and tracks to be jerky. I'm used to more coarse control like on my John Deere tractor. I'm getting better at it though. How is it with yours?

      Those aren't pilot controls - they're direct-linkage old-school mechanical controls.
      Fwiw, I have a 1.6T direct-from-China mini with pilot controls and Kubota diesel, but even with pilot controls, it's still twitchy, mainly the swing (especially if you're using multiple functions at once, say boom and swing, once you stop moving the boom, swing will lurch). Will install a control valve on the swing circuit to slow it down. On those gasoline engine minis, I'd install a better muffler to get noise levels down.

    Did you consider just adding a Cylinder in place of the Strut on your Mech Thumb? However, finding a cylinder "Collapsed at shorter than 14"" (the strut's length) would be a hard task.

      I'm inexperienced with an excavator, so I've been conservative. What I found was if the bucket gets caught on something (e.g., a large rock in the hole you're digging), the excavator will pitch forward (even with the blade down). The act of pitching forward will cause you to push on the stick, causing it to pitch backwards. I've never operated a larger excavator before, but I suspect this is the difference between controls mounted on a pedestal versus controls mounted as part of the operator seat. I agree with "pretty safe", but I found a reason to wear a hard hat... :) These things are great at getting into small spaces to dig. My tractor with a 3-pt backhoe is at least 25' long and w-a-y less maneuverable. Sorry, this is more about general operation than lifting things... I'm curious as to others' experiences.
