Ya man I thought the exact same thing. Beetlejuice and Heath Ledger's Joker have a lot of similarities, the makeup and the psychotic malice with both characters are eerily similar
And watching Jack Nicholson in "the shining"? A psycho crazy man that lost his mind, that's why he was being Joker, and did a great act for it. Michael's character was good for Bruce Wayne. Style also, I think burton did a great choice too choose those actors in each role. 😁😊
@Alex Souster Who do you think Is the best Batman than? If we are including animate and not just live action and movies and tv shows I feel Kevin Conroy is the best. Great live appearance in the CW Arrow verse “Elseworlds” crossover as well.
The reason why I see Michael as the best is because all the other actors looked they were casted to play Bruce/Batman. Michael actually has the look and feel of some one thrown into the situation's that the character would encounter.
mike was around 38 and tim was about 31 in this interview. mike was already well established, and came out of the 70s early 80s party days, in nyc and la, , burton had only directed pee wees adventure when he was like 25 and then of course bettle juice, and now look at this career.. amazing.. were they on coke? maybe..
Sometimes I wonder if Burton and Johnny Depp never met. Would Michael Keaton be what Depp became in Burton's movies? I like Depp and all, but I miss Keaton's on-screen charisma. He did so many great and different movies at his peak.
Tim seemed particularly exhausted during this interview. I recall in the DVD commentary that the '89 film was an overwhelming experience for him that actually stressed him out so much that he remembers almost nothing from the shoot.
Tim Burton "I've been in show business for 35-40 years now" I'm guessing he's joking since he in his early 30s (at best) when this interview took place.
Michael: "It was always more fun to me to SCARE than to BE SCARED. I used to scare the shit out of my sister!" No wonder he got the role of Beetlejuice... XD
i feel the same way. Batman and Batman Returns is what i grew up watching. i really dont care for the new movies. its hard for me to accept anyone else as Batman other than Keaton.
In the 80's (wtf) lol... Yeah if you're not a lame millennial by chance. You know if you gotta point out someone's wearing sunglasses at night you was considered a dork. Best to just let people be cool without you dude so you can go back playing D&D.. seriously......
@FelatioSucks1 Didn't know how to word it, either. So, thank you. He didn't base it off the graphic novel it's self just the off the artistic tone of it.
Why are they both wearing sunglasses inside? It's not just one, it's both...... Tim Burton, what a director! Simply the best, but it makes you wonder. When Tim Burton talks he's very scattered and he has a real difficulty clearly conveying his thoughts, it's a real challenge or he just has a lot of excitement, or he has anxiety, who knows, but he gets so many compliments from actors he works with that love working with the guy, but when you hear him public speak, it seems like he'd be challenging to work with in that regard, trying to understand what he's getting at. As an artist, he has a super clear vision and his artwork, he always feels isn't good, actually tells a lot so, I question and marvel at how he does so well in his job, maybe it's just actors kissing up, seems they're always on the hunt for more work, but anyway, EXCELLENT MOVIES however he does it. Blows my mind. It's sad to see Michael Keaton sitting there knowing he had to surrender his identity and create a new one because of Kurt Douglas's son. Michael Keaton doesn't get to be himself and had to change his stage name to Keaton, maybe he likes it so he's harder to find but, kind of a drag you don't get to be yourself, you have to change your name. Bummer.......
@omegadevil: M. Shoemaker should be Joel Schumacher, my bad. Love this interview. Staying true to yourself & enjoying a good scare. Beetlejuice proved as such, well before Batman. In fact, given the movie's cult status--most notably due to the cartoon series--I think Beetlejuice is Burton's true baby, moreso than either Batman film or his recent love affair with Johnny Depp. If Beetlejuice 2 does finally get greenlit, we need Micheal Keaton & Winona Ryder back for sure, with Burton in charge.
I completely agree with you (Kevin's voice is amazing as Batman, and Mark is crazy as the Joker; like a goofy scary insane person), but as far as movies go I think Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson were the best bad guy/good guy relationship.
I like what Nolan is doing. he brought Batman closer to us as if he was among us. When you watch the other movies it was too cheesy and cartoon like. Even the cartoon had a more serious tone than those. Nolan delivers in both story telling and it's dark visuals. If you don't agree go watch Batman and robin or Batman forever, Batman returns. you may change your mind. if not then you don't have to see the new movies and stick to Burton. Also i'm no fan boy so my opinion is not biased to anyone.
@omegadevil: Tim Burton ONLY made Batman & Batman Returns. Batman Forever & Batman and Robin were done by M. Shoemaker (sp?) who changed the dark formula to something like the 60s Adam West show. The things Burton is MORE known for is things like Beetlejuice--also with Keaton in the title role--and Corpse Bride, even with the nerophilic implications of both, especially the former with BJ's perverse humor, the wedding scene, & of course the preported sequel & subsequent cartoon.
I was hoping someone would make superman kinda like Dragon Ball Z or something. Give him a nemisis who is actually so intense, Superman rips his tights and bleeds fighting this guy on another planet or something. Hand to hand combat in other words, not trying to outwit him with random powers. Only on Superman 3 have I seen him reverse a wall distruction with beams from his eyes
@Fridayth31st that's your opinion, I see from the physical, not artistic, never said that Christian Bale is a bad actor. I know, wonderful actor, winning an award at the Oscars, but I do not like acting in Batman, sorry that's my opinion
@Usagi12Tsukino Well, the definition of dork is somebody who isn't afraid to be themselves. So, yes, people who are truly down to earth are usually dorks. Unless their personality is naturally "cool." Which most of the time if not all the time is just an act.
Here's a scene. In the very first Batman movie,Tim Burton's style, when the criminal shoots the batman and the second falls down on the ground, suddenly the first decides to remove the superhero's mask. And he does. But,what a horrible surprise, under the latex(or kevlar or whatever) he sees the face of....Beetlejuice.Crazy and wild green hair, rotten teeth, fungal growth on his pale white dead flesh... "We've come for your daughter,Jack"!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The criminal:"HOLY MOTHER OF JESUS"!!!!
It's funny because Keaton jokes about how they're dressed like two pretentious bullshit dark show biz guys, but that's how Burton ALWAYS looks, while this is my first time seeing Keaton this way and found it odd.
@FelatioSucks1 It was slightly based on it and I know that, that's what I meant. Guess I should have been more specific and I have read it. I actually own it. =P Dork.
lol Batman is the best thing burtons been involved in,in my opinion.Alic in Wonderland made that much money? holy batcrap! why? i couldnt even sit through that whole movie. Ive watched Batman many times, love it
@Fridayth31st "Yet in Bale videos noone even mentions keaton or burton?" I don't know what "Bale videos" you are going to, probably ones that aren't related to Batman, but plenty I've seen that are Batman related do have Bale fans constantly praising Bale/Nolan and condemning the previous Batman directors/actors including Tim Burton and Keaton. "Do I hear jealousy?" Nope, we Burton fans are quite happy with Burton's take, but can't wait until Nolan ends his franchise.
@peteagassi I'm a Batman fan and I have read and bought alot of comics. I have Year One, actually. I'm also a Tim Burton fan. I don't think that's what he meant. He meant for more 3D depth. Like real live action. He's not a moron, either. He's a genius. Oh, and you know what? The first Batman film he did was actually based of the graphic novel Dark Knight Returns. So just chill out, man. You people get pissed over the slightest thing. xD
@ArckDesign That's true but he did produce Batman Forever. That's why it didn't suck too bad. Batman and Robin was horrible, though. Tim had nothing to do with that one Dx Filmed as a joke.
Keaton was a great Batman... but watching Beetlejuice makes me think he would have been an even better joker
Ya man I thought the exact same thing. Beetlejuice and Heath Ledger's Joker have a lot of similarities, the makeup and the psychotic malice with both characters are eerily similar

Maybe Tim Burton was going to make Michael Keaton The Joker, but then Michael Keaton said, no I don't want to be a Clown again!
He could have played anyone of them.
This song is about Beetlejuice! Sooo cool! czcams.com/video/9gV_Ja2hSb4/video.html

...and no one at the time would have ever predicted this....
Tim Burton + Michael Keaton + Jack Nicholson + Danny Elfman = Best Batman movie ever. It's simple mathematics.

Michael Keaton in 1989... WOOF!
Man, these guys are so high.

Michael Keaton: Tim's Johnny Depp before Johnny Depp.

Nolan knew a lot more about Batman then Burton claimed and thinks he does.
Sure he does - because you say so. When the words from HIS mouth were "I know nothing about Batman"...much like people you who love his trilogy.

Love that they're both wearing sun glasses! Oh sweet sweet cocaine...
LA in the 80s. What a time
@FelatioSucks1 Don't worry, I'm a dork as well sometimes. I think we all are in some way shape or form. xD
There must be an inside joke with the glasses, Michael's joke that is.
Oh I spoke too soon and the answer is fantastic.
Mark Hamill was the best Joker followed by Jack Nicholson. Heath didn’t get the Joker at all, and just mumbled incoherently the whole movie.
Mark Hamill was just a voice actor for Joker
those glasses are SOOOO dark. i bet he can't see a single thing. lol.
Bummer I thought this was going to be about beetlejuice
