    Also, ideas for rewards: choosing a youtube video for rainy recess or when students arrive in the morning, choosing a go noodle or just dance video, bringing slippers to class, wearing a hat in class, chewing gum in class (I've seen one teacher give her students "gum licenses"), choosing a theme dress up day, choosing a class game to play, being allowed to listen to music in class, extended recess, etc

    “There’s no tired like teacher tired.”
    I one hundred percent agree! I had my first week with students last week as well, I love the idea of showing a movie if you have to have indoor recess! We had a little rain last week too and fortunately by recess time it cleared up, but I’ve been trying to brainstorm what fun things to do with my kiddos if we’re stuck inside for our breaks. Thanks for all the great ideas!
    I know that you were hoping to move down in grades, and I was hoping for third or second grade when I started my teaching career, but I’ve been in fifth grade for almost 9 years and I hope that you love it! The leaps and bounds that kids can make in fifth grade is amazing, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else - I hope you find that too!

    For the mini lights where the plug is - you can overlap the cord so the lights meet the lights and use twist ties to hold it together. That way the light continues. It adds a bit of wire bulk, but would stand out less.

    Not a teacher but I love watching your vlogs... they me think of all the good memories of going back to school. I work in a senior living community and I love the idea of using the see-through mask and also the smile printout for my residents! Thanks for being a constant source of positivity for me!

    "Be still my teacher heart!!" LOVE how your classroom turned out Kim! Your students are so lucky to have you as their teacher this year. Thank you for always inspiring me, even on my lowest days. Please do a teacher outfit video. I'm 5"0, and always looking for teacher outfits that fit my height. Have a wonderful week this week and sending lots of love your way!!

    Homework pass, line leader (that way you can write down where they were and the front of the line should make it easier), pick indoor recess activity if it’s a rainy week, treasure box (my kids teacher does this...has random little things including class supplies in a treasure box and they get to choose from it...pencils, erasers, stickers, stamps, etc)

  • @stephaniesmith1815

    Girl, you need a mask bracket for teaching. My ability to project has increased SO much since I started wearing one. You just throw them in the dishwasher to disinfect them. I am a specialist teacher who does reading interventions, so I am mostly in the classroom doing small groups during centers...but even in that smaller space together, it is hard for the kiddos to hear (because of all the background centers noise probably), but the mask bracket helps SO SO much! Just an idea.

    Love your vlog!! You are so fun to listen to because you are so excited about everything 😊
    Listening to you talk right after the first day of school was exactly like I felt the gist day on Sept 1. It is so hard to teach in a mask, you can’t get close to anyone and it is just not natural. Everything takes so much longer because of the masks! We will get through it. I am amazed how well the kids have transitioned back. They are amazing! Your outfits are so cute! Keep being who you are and have a great year!

    Here are a few rewards I use, not all are COVID cautious, but it will give you a general idea. 1. fluffy friend(they get to have a stuffed animal friend at their desk all day) 2. Shoes off all day 3. Smelly markers 4. Teacher desk 5. Silly putty 6. Fidget spinner 7. Board game with the teacher 8. Pick your classroom job 9. Extra ramp time (we do this ramps and pathways thing all year so one might not make sense 🤪) 10. Sit with a buddy at lunch
    Oh! And I teach second grade so the prizes might be different. Good luck! You’re doing awesome!

    Our district in NC bought us a really good quality web cam as well as wireless headphones with a microphone. I had been "Zooming" with students on my chrome book which was not the best quality. Now the camera is so good, I have to make sure I have plenty of makeup on! Your classroom is a beautiful place to learn! I've really enjoyed watching it come together over the past few episodes.

    My behavior management system las year was similar to yours. This year we started all virtual, and the only reward that translated to online was a homework pass. I found a virtual rewards product on TPT that has some great ideas, most would work well for in person, as well. The product is called “Digital Coupons and Rewards” by Briana Beverly. It was so easy to use. I didn’t use the points system she has setup, but just let the kids choose any reward they want, removing any I didn’t want to use from the batch. Hope that helps.

    • @thisisnotagame08
      @thisisnotagame08 Před 3 lety +1

      KK Heyhey the face shield protects your eyes and stops you from touching your face, but the aerosols can just float around the open portions of the mask. For those reasons it’s not approved as a stand alone by the CDC. That said, I work in special education and we wear both a shield and a mask, as some of our students aren’t able to wear masks, so the more spit protection the better. It’s a lot !

    • @ElementaryInTheMitten

    Ok, I'm sure you've mentioned why before but I have to ask again. Why does your school not have AC?? I would die of heat overload! You know how people get "hangry" well I get that but with heat. And now with having to wear masks, I'm sure thats not easy. More power to ya for keeping a positive attitude!

    • @Heyu7her3
      @Heyu7her3 Před 3 lety

      A lot of places are turning off ACs to "slow the spread," esp. if the vents for every room are connected. So, instead, some teachers have recommended opening the windows and having a fan pointed at the windows for a cross-breeze.

      @09thowe Před 3 lety +1

      Lots of responses on this already - but yes, we’ve never had air conditioning! Lots of schools in my area don’t have it to save $$$ because it’s only really necessary for a small part of the year. We just use box fans and have the windows open until it cools down!

  • @chelseakay812
    @chelseakay812 Před 3 lety

      We just sit on the grass, but some classes have brought beach towels and that works too! We don’t have tables and I’m not sure how sit spots would work outside (maybe on the pavement that could work though!) We sanitize several times a day including before and after grabbing a star ticket. Sometimes I hand them out to students and sometimes they go grab one!

    Great video! Do your classroom jobs compromise social distancing?

    • @ElementaryInTheMitten
      @ElementaryInTheMitten  Před 3 lety

      It depends what you're considering social distancing. Mail manager files mail, secretary passes out lunch cards, etc. All students have masks on at all times, sanitize before and after passing anything out, and follow other guidelines and procedures. Our goal is to limit exposure between different students, but all of my students are in the same "cohort" meaning they all go outside and play together at recess, eat in the lunch room together, eat breakfast in the classroom, etc.

    Hey Kim, can you wear a shield instead of a mask? I wear a shield when teaching and a mask other times.

    • @HonestlyHonor
      @HonestlyHonor Před 3 lety +4

      FYI! Per the CDC, shields should be worn with masks, not by themselves unless in certain situations. My school, and many others, are following similar guidelines.😊 “Therefore, CDC does not currently recommend use of face shields as a substitute for masks. However, wearing a mask may not be feasible in every situation for some people for example, people who are deaf or hard of hearing-or those who care for or interact with a person who is hearing impaired.”

      Hi, Michelle!! I hope your school year is off to a good start! 😊 We can only wear shields in addition to face masks for the reasons the other commenter made. Hoping I can find some more breathable face masks!

      @@ElementaryInTheMitten wow! We had all last week for PD and prep. We only meet with our kids online for 30 minutes each day this week. I still feel like I'm not prepared. Of course, our district has been changing and updating things on a minute by minute basis. I'm glad you're enjoying being back with kids!

    I definitely think you should invest in reusable cloth masks that allows you to put an extra filter on them if you don't want to use disposable masks, those are the best when it comes to protecting yourself from the virus that are not N95 or surgical masks
