  • Ruth Barbara Rendell, Baroness Rendell of Babergh, CBE (née Grasemann; 17th February 1930 - 2nd May 2015), was an English author of thrillers and psychological murder mysteries. Rendell's best-known creation, Chief Inspector Wexford, was the hero of many popular police stories, some of them successfully adapted for TV. But Rendell also generated a separate brand of crime fiction that deeply explored the psychological background of criminals and their victims, many of them mentally afflicted or otherwise socially isolated. This theme was developed further in a third series of novels, written under her pseudonym Barbara Vine.

I loved this author's brilliant collection, particularly the Barbara Vine books! She was unmatched. The way she could get into a character's head. I agree with her, it's the "why" that's most interesting in a mystery, not the minute details of "how." It was lovely to hear her voice; not as I'd imagined it!

My favourite author ever. Remarkable ability to get into the mind of the unbalanced. Her novels were/are always strange, compelling and unique. Thank God she wrote so many for us now that she is gone.

Indeed. I have been a fan for 30 years. I am 47 now. Last years I started reading all from 1964 upwards. Both Wefords and standalones. I am at 1988 right now hahha. I only have 3 Vine books. Not read those yet. I hear they are great. Thoughts?

They're better written, a bit darker and more complex.

As a great admirer of Ruth Rendell, this video is a real treat and a fitting tribute to an ingenious thriller writer. I hope that someone writes a biography of Ruth Rendell, combined with an in-depth analysis of her novels.

Oh I think they are very well researched. She keeps you well informed. Thirteen steps down is a brilliant book with great characters. The audio book is brilliantly read.

One of her most deliciously creepy novels in my view is A Sight for Sore Eyes, under her own name Ruth Rendell, although it is very Barbara Vine in style. As a Londoner, I find her novels set in London very appealing, particularly The Keys to the Street.

She was terrific and I loved most of her books. But re reading then again now there's problem that never occurred to me at the time. She's very prissy about sex. There's a lot of it in the books themselves, but she only touches on it very lightly, as though she doesn't know how to write about it convincingly.
