Why we have a playoff now. Army can make a claim to the 1946 National championship. Michigan in 1947 was undefeated and won the Rose Bowl and won a poll after January 1, 1948. Michigan in 1948 was undefeated to capture the National champion, even though they couldn't go to a bowl game. Odd rules of the day in college football.
