    With the car payment, I did the same thing. I was 25 when I paid off my car in 2004. I continued to drive that car and pay myself a car payment. In 2012, I paid cash for my next car with the money saved up, which I still drive today and continue the cycle. I haven't had a car payment in 20 years and don't plan on it ever again. I have the money saved up to purchase my next slightly used car when the time comes.

    DCA works great if it comes at the same frequency as pay. I had a portion of each check direct deposited into my brokerage account and had a scheduled purchase of a total market index fund twice a month. It never sees my checking or savings account so I really don't pay attention to it and it is all automated. If you already have a sum to invest, just throw it in and let it ride.

    I think if you are new to investing, there IS a psychological benefit to dollar cost averaging into your retirement accounts even if it has been mathematically proven that bulk investing into these yields better results more often. Once you have accumulated a significant amount of money, it may make sense to then start transitioning to bulk investing. This of course depends on so many factors like age, income, spending, risk tolerance, etc.

      I only DCA cuz I aint got the bulk to dump it into the market. And for most people DCA is the only way to invest for that reason.

      @@crazej213 I know a few people that bulk invested near the top of 2021 and had the whole idea of investing tainted because they took out most of their invested money while it was falling and haven't really invested much since. They have their money in a HYSA at least.

    • @Sylvan_dB
      @Sylvan_dB Před 2 dny

      I think it depends on the amount. Are you talking about 1% of your invested assets? You are probably going to be comfortable lump sum that chunk in. But if you are talking adding 10X to your invested assets, doing that as a lump would scare me. The threshhold for someone is going to be in between those extremes, and it will almost certainly also vary depending on the person. I'm far from new to investing, but doing a lump of 10% of my invested assets would bother me. Maybe the amount I'm comfortable with is similar to the daily variance I'm accustomed to seeing?

    I so get the "fun money" thing. I have a small online investment account that I treat and fuss over like a pet. That way I don't even think about the retirement accounts that are set on auto pilot mostly. I watch my "pet" grow, I watch it have babies "dividends", I hope it gets better when it's not feeing well... and I feed it.

Not worth him going into too much detail and open himself up to that sort of thing. Knowing what I know, I can tell you he got f*cked over by people who claimed to be his friend.
