The Worker's Marseillaise (Russian: Рабочая Марсельеза) is a Russian revolutionary song named after the Marseillaise. It is based on a poem of Pyotr Lavrov, first published on 1 July 1875 in London as A new song (Russian: Новая песня, tr. Novaya pesnya). The poem reflects a radical socialist program and calls for the violent destruction of the Russian monarchy. At the end of 1875 or in 1876, this poem began to be sung in Russia to the melody of the last verse of the Robert Schumann's song Die beiden grenadiere. Schumann's melody is inspired by the French Marseillaise, but it is original. Thus, the melody and lyrics of the Worker's Marseillaise have nothing to do with the French Marseillaise. The song is close to the Russian cruel romances, and this influenced its popularity. The name the Worker's Marseillaise has been fixed since the 1890s.
It existed alongside several other popular versions, among others a Soldier's Marseillaise and a Peasant's Marseillaise.
This anthem was popular during the 1905 Russian Revolution and was used as a national anthem by the Russian Provisional Government until its overthrow in the October Revolution. It remained in use by Soviet Russia for a short time alongside The Internationale. During the 1917 Revolution it was played at all public assemblies, street demonstrations, concerts and plays.

Временным правительством «Марсельеза» была утверждена в качестве государственного гимна 6 марта 1917 года по старому стилю- через 4 дня после отречения от престола Николая II. Первое время она исполнялась под оригинальную французскую мелодию, но затем композитор А. К. Глазунов видоизменил музыку так, чтобы она лучше соответствовала русским словам.
В Петрограде местный Совет рабочих и солдатских депутатов 4 апреля 1917 года провозгласил вместо «Марсельезы» гимном «Интернационал», но тогда это решение не встретило поддержки. Временное правительство лишь заявило, что окончательное решение о гимне должно в будущем принять Учредительное собрание.

Calling this a soviet song isn't entirely accurate. Although the Soviets still used it, It was originally championed by the SR's and the Provisional Government -- in fact, it was the anthem of the Provisional Government / Russian Republic

@@FodaseNaoLigo I'm assuming you're talking about my profile picture. Its similar to the Russian Empire, I agree, but not quite the same. For one, the eagle is different in a number of ways - the imperial regalia is gone: the crown, scepter and coat of arms of the various duchy's and principalities of the empire is absent as well. Furthermore, the canton of the Russian Empire had a yellow background for the eagle, mine is the cross of saint Andrew -- Russia's naval jack funny enough.

@@FodaseNaoLigo Along with Albania and Croatia. The eagle is not purely American. Many nations have chosen to use the eagle as a national symbol. Including in this case, Russia.
This is not a Soviet song. It served as the anthem of the First Russian Republic (1917-1918), and was replaced by the Internationale by the end of 1918, which was four years before the Soviet Union was founded.

There is an interesting inconsistence in English and Russian descriptions: while English description states that Workers' Marsellaise has somewhat similar, but not the same melody as La Marsellaise, the Russian description says that the melody for Workers' Marsellaise was derived from La Marsellaise. Which statement is true?
“Derived from” doesn’t mean “the same as”. It’s a very similar melody clearly modelled after La Marseillaise, but modified to fit the Russian lyrics
@@stoutyyyy Yes, I know that, I'm just pointing out a little difference in English and Russian descriptions. You've got me there - I should have written "on the same melody" instead of "derived from", because that's what Russian desc says.
Both statement are true. Original La Marseillaise melody was used for the anthem first time, but then the melody was modified to match the lyrics.

The melody of this song isn’t that of the French Marseillaise, but rather the closing portion of Schumann’s ”Die Bieden Grenadiere”, which is a modification on Lisle’s melody

@@odoevskyduke4606 Yes, that pre-revolutionary version uses the Lisle melody. The version used during Kerensky’s government and early Bolshevik era uses Schumann’s modified melody.

Отличный пример, когда народ не может придумать нового, а слепо копирует и ворует чужую историю. Как и с "Боже царя храни", с этой рабочей Марсельезой, так и с современным гимном России)
